Time and again we have heard arguements about what the best album is, but the best song?

Impossible to decide personally, let alone reach a consensus as a forum. However what I will nominate, I personally think is brilliance in terms of both lyrics and music, as well as fitting in brilliantly with the concept of the album, is Home by Dream Theater, off of Metropolis part 2.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I couldn't say but personally it's November Rain by Guns N Roses for me

If people feel that isn't metal, then they can **** off and buy something from the new age section:p

There's no way to ever determine this; but I'll give it a stab anyway!!!

    Some front runners could include:

    'Paranoid' - Black Sabbath
    'Master Of Puppets' - Metallica
    'Ace Of Spades' - Motorhead
'The Number Of The Beast' - Iron Maiden
    'Angel Of Death' - Slayer
    'Back In Black' - AC/DC
    'Iron Man' - Black Sabbath
    'Painkiller' - Judas Priest
    'One' - Metallica
    'Hangar 18' - Megadeth
'Runnin With The Devil' - Van Halen
'Holy Wars... The Punishment Due' - Megadeth
'Welcome To The Jungle' - Guns N Roses
    'Electric Eye' - Judas Priest
    'Raining Blood' - Slayer
    'Highway To Hell' - AC/DC
    'The Trooper' - Iron Maiden
'Smoke On The Water' - Deep Purple
'Another Piece Of Meat' - Scorpions
    'Armed And Ready' - M.S.G.
'You Could Be Mine' - Guns N Roses
'Balls To The Wall' - Accept
'Too Fast For Love' - Motley Crue
    'Peace Sells' - Megadeth
    'Holy Diver' - Dio
'Stairway To Heaven' - Led Zeppelin
    'Enter Sandman' - Metallica
'Breaking The Law' - Judas Priest
'Still Of The Night' - Whitesnake
'Rock N Roll All Nite' - KISS
'Bark At The Moon' - Ozzy

and so on and so forth ad infinitum...........

There is no objective "best" and any attempt to get that ends up with a load clichéd suggestions.

But IMO, the best metal song ever is White Walls by Between The Buried and Me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 190 ✭✭Lucifer31

It's like trying to decide what the best colour is!!
However: I'm 34 and my bandmates were discussing Judas Priest's Painkiller tune a couple of years ago. I went home and had a listen - I was blown away. That song is unreal. It has absolutely eveything a metal song needs. The soloing is fantastic, a great metal scream near the start, etc. Even got that tingly feeling in my spine on that first listen. Somehow I had missed the tune down the years, but saw Priest live in the O2 recently.

    Other nominees:

    Atonement: Opeth
    Toxic Waltz: Exodus
    2 minute to midnight: Maiden.

    St Anger.....hehehehehe.

Hmm maybe Whitesnake - Still of the Night.

I'll have to go for Black Sabbath's Paranoid. It just has that timeless metal riff that everyone under the sun knows. Probably not the best metal song ever, but if you're looking for something to represent to the genre as a whole, I think it's as good as anything.

That, or Painkiller. Or Run to the Hills. Or Master of Puppets. Or Holy Diver :P

All of them and Walk-Pantera. Thats a fairly epic metal mix album

As others have said, there is no definitive 'Best Metal Song' ever. However, if I had to vote I'd say One or Master of Puppets. Why?

They opened up the metal genre to many people. Metal was underground, and Master of Puppets suddenly hit #1 in the charts. Hats of to Metallica for making Metal a more acceptable genre for the public, then I shred the hat for everything after AJFA to St.Anger. Then buy a new hat for Death Magentic.

It's definitely well up there for me, along with Learning to Live off that album. Otherwise ... I'll go with Colony by In Flames.

Forgot to mention "Cold Sweat" by Thin Lizzy. One of the best songs out there, and it is definitely one of the most 'metal' songs Thin Lizzy ever released. John Sykes is a legend on the guitar. Fact.

Now you've changed it to 'favourite metal song', I can comment.

'Hollow Years' by Dream Theater is just awesome, I can't think of anything better than that.

Id nominate Orion by Metallica and In My Darkest Hour by Megadeth, in addition to Hangar 18

Certainly.. And many, many others. Port Royal, Blazon Stone, Pile Of Skulls... Feck, where all those people are gone??? Is anyone out there who can still really feel this music?

Here is another pearl (my first metal album I've ever heard, it was the spark):

Even after so many years it still gives me a skin crawl no girl can give me...

Angel of Death will always get my vote. But yeah, Postmortem and Raining Blood always used to bring the house down at the trash bash in McGonigles.

Instantly thought of Waltersobchak's threads (that we all worked so hard on!) There's bound to be a best metal (& rock) song ever in this mix!

100 (Rock) songs you think need to be heard

100 songs you think need to be heard part 2

    And this:100 best metal albums

Malice, can you sticky these maybe? After all they do "need to be heard" :D

Not exactly "metal" (more like Sino-synth pop, tbh), but could easily be a metal track (particularly from an 80's Metal Japanese band like EZO)... Legendary from Trey Parker. Even the title sounds like a cheesy metal song, tbh!!!:D
