I couldn't wait another month or two for the beginning of the outdoor season proper, so we can track the Irish in action over in the U.S, our walkers and our athletes down under here.

AAI have just posted on twitter that Robert Heffernan has just broke the Irish record in his debut over 50km...unconfirmed as of yet.

Read it on the RTE website, Robert finished 3rd at the European Athletics Walking Permit meeting in Dudince, Slovakia with a new Irish record of 3.50.07. Knocks 45seconds off the old record - a great start to the season for him!!

And another 52 second run from Cuddihy. Great to see.

Brenden Boyce put in a good performance in the 50k with Rob! He got 4:08 good first 50k for a young lad hes only 23

Heard Rob really struggled for the last 10k
Does anybody know his attentions for Barcelona 20k or 50k or both?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 104 ✭✭Milesandmiles

I think it would be pretty difficult to double as there's only two days between the events. The 20k is on first. I'm guessing he'll go for that. Based on his times he would be more competitive over the 20k - he did 80:41 two weeks ago in Switzerland.

Laura Reynolds of Leitrim also did a B std for Worlds next year at that race.

Poor Robert H was overtaken by two athletes over the last 300m - really struggled over final 10km but that is understandable on his debut for long distance.

I think with more training geared at this distance Robert could really make a world title bid in a year or so in the event. Probably best to stick with the 20km this year at the Europeans, I think a medal would certainly be within his capabilities, he deserves one too.

Great walking by the other two Irish walkers too. Both young athletes with promising futures, showing improvement all the time.

Delighted to see Joanne C making progress down under - I think she'll continue to knock bits off her time - from 52.95 to 52.84 in two weeks. She'll want to go 51.__ as the summer approaches and hope to peak in late July.

Encouraging to see David Gillick heading off to LA for some training - he also mentioned he might get some early season races in against some Americans!

Check out his website www.davidgillick.com for his latest blog.

Also Derval O'Rourke is due to compete in the 100m sprint at the Leevale Open Sports - She is due for a new PB in that event and I have a feeling this season she will set it, maybe not early in April but later in the summer. Also watch out for her in some 200m races over the next couple of months - should be interesting to see how she gets on - it's a bit exciting!

Colin Griffin walked a new PB over 20km of 1.23.53 to finish 11th in Rio Maior today.

    Olive Loughnane DNF.

    2. Dejen Gebremeskel Ethiopia 13:18
    3. Bekana Daba Ethiopia 13:24

Gillick ran a 21.45 200m in California, not a bad opener

Whoever he did get beat by British 400m runner Graham Hedman who has a pb of 45.8 from 2006 ...

It should be noted that Hedman's 200m PR is 21.02 compared with Gillick's 21.21.

Edited to add: Jason Smyth opened with a windy 10.37, which augurs well for his summer.

Jason smyth ran 10.37 in america over the weekend....wind was a very strong +3.7 but good to see an irish athlete running that time
    .

Also wouldnt worry about gillick being beat by hedman...his 200 was never great even last year, gillick runs a different style of 400m more even splits though it wud be good if he could get his 200m to 21 flat or slighty under....needs to get out quicker i think?

From 6 years ago ... not ot bother as you say Gillick is very strong last 200

Getting his 200 speed down whilst maintaining his strength has surely got to be what his coach is doing with him this year ... that will be what makes him a sub 44.5 guy ...

Yes, indeed. And Gillick hasn't improved his PR over 200m since 2005.

David Gillick 10.71 over 100m and 21.20 over 200m at the Bryan Clay invitational. Billy Ryan 49.81 over 400m.

And Joanne Cuddihy keeps on improving: 23.38 (+1.3) over 200m to finish second at the Australian championships. Her PB is 23.33.

PB for Gillick in 200 this early is a good sign! Ryan well off his indoor time this season...unusual? Only an outdoor opener but even still...?

Super results from Joanne Cuddihy and David Gillick.

Joanne has knocked around a second off her 400m time in about 4 weeks, she is now getting down to some impressive times once again. Her 200m time is also very encouraging - she is in great shape.

Gillick's 21.20 is also equally impressive and represents a great new PB.

Mark Christie's new PB is a great start for him, I think we might see him in Barcelona in that event if he can keep going with this sort of form - maybe get down another 10/15 seconds over the next month or two.

    Keep 'em coming!!:D

Pa Maher ran 52.14 today at the Leevale Open for a new Junior record... that is a class performance! That's also over a second under the WJC standard!

    Kourosh Fouragi jumped 2.15 today.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 40 lacticsmygame

Seye Ogunlewe had a 10.81 in his heat but appears to have been dq'd in the final...i'm presuming for jumping the gun. Is it a little worrying that the likes of Colvert, Adams and Russell didn't exactly post super fast times being that only Colvert broke 11 in the final with 10.99? Or is it just because it was the opening 100m race of the season for them?

    @Lacticsmygame
The wind in that race wasn't good heat 1 and in the Finals.

Great performance by Maher, he is only 18, still junior next year. There is another Munsterman waiting in the wings to open his hurdling account this season. Will do so in the coming week and I expect him to get the standard too. If he does, I see that record going another couple of times between them over the summer.

I presume you're talking about Timmy Crowe...where is he racing this week? Some strength in the hurdles this year with those two and I believe Jason Harvey too. Not to mention, John Fagan who ran a 52-high yesterday and Paul Bryne with a 53-high. These are all young lads under 21!

Yep, its Timmy. I think he'll do the Munsters on bank holiday weekend and then there is a 4 hurdles race with the IMC meet in Irishtown on May 8th with all the guys from Cork yesterday plus Timmy likely to be in it. Timmy was faster than Maher last year over hurdles, faster on the flat but the way Maher ran yesterday he'd need his A game to beat Maher over the hurdles this year, I can see the two going 51. Fagan did well too with a 2.5 sec PB yesterday and is getting closer to the Euro U23 '11 standard of low 52, just under half a second of it, was up with Maher at the last and stumbled off it and lost ground. Byrne did well as he missed a huge chunk of training in the winter and after indoors and is a natural long hurdler with a good pedigree (his bother is a 51 man!). I think all the boys will be putting it up to Tom Carey this year;)

Forgot to add we probably saw the breakthrough of the next female Ferrybank long hurdling star yesterday too, she is young but is all class....

Jason Smyth ran 10.45 (-0.5) in Gainesville on Saturday, which is intrinsically superior to his PB (10.42 +1.4). With a nice wind reading he could get down towards 10.3 this year.

Good to see those long-awaited developments over the one lap hurdles. It's nearly 78 years since Tisdall's Olympic Gold!

Some good running from first day of intervarsities. Chris Russell (DCU) with a 10.90 in 100 heats, Dean Adams (UUJ) and Steven Colvert (UCD) also winners of there heats. Very close final is in store.

Brian Gregan (DCU) and Lorcan O Cathain (Guest) going through comfortably to the 200m finals with Patrick Phelan (UCD), Craig Lynch (DCU), Darragh Graham (UL) and Neil Dunne (UCD), also getting through comfortable with 22-mid-to-high performances. Will be a packed final!

Eoin Mulhall (UCD) and Kieran Kelly (ITB) both won the 400 heats comfortably with low and mid 49 runs. Disappointment for Jason Harvey (UU) who was DQ'd in first heat. Cathal Owens (CIT) and Dara Kervick (DCU) also through with sub-50's. Final will be some battle with a few of these guys certain to dip below 49 after seeing the heats.

Simon Ryan also with a solid mid 31 for the 10k on pretty much a solo run in hot windy conditions

Russell false start. Graham, O Shea and Adams for 1, 2, 3 with Colvert 4th in the 100m. bit of a disaster in the 200m with race being run dispite false start Graham and Gregan 1,2

This happened in the Seniors at Santry last year as well ... so blatent

100 was a bit of a turn up, though Graham did win last week at Leevale, he's a man in form wonder if he could make the Euros over 200? Was expecting Colvert to kill this!

Well going by the results the early pace was slug like, so obviously they're going to have more in the tank last lap ...

Still a fast last lap none the less ...

Great openers by Kelly and Mulhall in the 400's at this a very early stage yet - 48.78 and 48.82 respectively, both PB's. Dara Kevick also set a PB with 49.17. Great stuff! National seniors this year will be some competition...sub 49's might be needed to even make the final! As the AAI have said, the quarter-mile is in a healthy state at the moment.

Some strong times posted in the 200 too considering it was a -2.30 wind. Juniors O'Cathain and Houston (I think he's still junior?) with encouraging times too. Certainly sub 22 performances had there been any kind of tailwind. Could yet be a number of athletes going to Canada this year.

Very promising run for O'Caithan, Houston is not a junior anymore.

They're could be a few yes, jsut depends whether AAI takes everyone who gets standards or ones they think will just ake the final, could be very expensive to take so many athletes to Canada ...

Thanks. Yeah, that's sadly the case. It's terrible really. I think if an athlete gains qualification for a world championships they deserve to go regardless of whether they'd make a final or not. It's not really encouraging for athletes either as it is essentially the AAI saying "well you're not going to make a final so we'd rather leave you at home than waste money giving you a chance to compete at a WC's". I wish there was more funding for athletics in Ireland. :(

Mark Christe is in the fast section 5k aswell standard chasing too
Gary Thornton is in section 2 of the 10k should have a big one after his good performance lately on the roads

On the Womens side kelly mcneice is in the fast section of the 1500m this field is stacked so a fast time is on the cards
Hazel Murphy is in the fast section of the 5k too

this track meet is known for being the one to get pb's, standards and sometimes records at! as the races are more of glorified time trials lets hope of some great racing and times for our athletes

ps it can be viewed live on flotrack.org

Christie 13:36, Hazel Murphy 15:46 and McNeice 4:16, all off the top of my head.

Cragg, Kenneally DNF, unfortunately. Thornton ran 29:00.

Chris Solinsky ran a US record of 26:59 in Cragg's race.

Post more later. Rushing off to the NAC!

    P.S. All in Stanford.
