Rowing..How many cals does the machine say you burn an hour?

    for me, it's usually 450ish..is that good/bad?
    also, for your whole gym workout on average how many cals do you burn? i usually burn around 505ish per session (thats cycling, rowing, stepper, walking) thanks..

    It doesn't matter how many they say, all those machines are lying bastards. No machine can tell you how many calories you are burning unless you are doing it inside an oxygen chamber or something similar. Even two people of equal weight doing the same exercise for an hour could burn totally different calories depending on fitness level and workout intensity.

    Same for other gym work. For practical purposes, ignore calories burning during workouts, just count it as part of normal life.

    But if you really want to calculate your calories get a Heart Rate Monitor.

    I know they're not exact but they show me if I'm doing the exercise any faster/more intense/whatever than what I was doing before..so just humour me..

    Without checking I believe the concept 2 rowing machine bases calories burned on a 75kg man so one must adapt that up or down based on sex/weight.

    Kudos if you are doing a full hour on the machine - that is IMO an achievement in and of itself - good going.

    450 in an hour what does that equate to in distance?

    In an hour you can probably row at least 10,000 metres maybe even 12,000 metres far better for your mind IMO to see the metres move up than see the cals change by 7 per minute! :)

    It's been ages since I did 60 mins on the erg, in fact I just checked and
    • Even as a rower I did bugger all 60min pieces on the erg, probably less than 10 in total!
    • I only recorded the cals for my 60min pb and they were 1315. Honestly rarely noted cals but did note heart rate, watts, metres, stroke rate - everything it seems but the cals!
    This was done in the 90's and there is no way in hell I'd get anywhere close to that cals now, doubt my butt would let me do 60 mins either.

    Now when on a bike or elliptical and inputting my weight as 120kgs I can burn over 500kcals per half hour, if I put in 70kgs it would be a lot less as in 300kcals or even less! I do not do more than 30mins cardio per session anymore.
