Changing workout routeins

Ok so it has been mentioned on here a lot that gym programs should be changed every 6-8 weeks to keep your body guessing and for better results. What is the major reason for this or if I find a program working for me would I be better off sticking with it longer than 6-8 weeks or would I get better results by tweaking it a little.

Also if I do change my routine are there some exercises which should always be part of your program, e.g. dead lifts, squats, power cleans, etc??

I reckon if you're making progress with a rountine, keep at it. Progress for me would be getting stronger.

No matter what routine you do it should always be based on the big lifts: Squat, Deadlift, Bench, OH press, Pullups and Rows.

Your body adapts to just about anything. As soon as you find a routine is not working for you, change some aspect of it. You don't need to do a whole new routine, but you could change things like lifting speed and reps, vary the intensity or the order of the exercises, introduce supersets and trisets etc.

And sometimes, you really do need to find new exercises.
