Hi Guys

Just want to let you all know about new race in Portumna on the 26th June. It has been such a great location for the 25.5 Triathlon that I have decided to expand it and make it a real weekend of sport.
I have been talking about doing this since 2008 and I have decided to take the plunge!
So on the Saturday there will be a 100k, U-Marathon (50k) and full marathon distances, and on Sunday the usual sprint triathlon will take place.

SO who's up for doing both days?:D

The course has been officially measured and certified 100km, 50km and Marathon; more information on www.sebfitness.com and online entry through runireland.com

I had my heart set on going for the 100k, not so sure now. Maybe the 50k would be a nice easy day out for me. :)

Edit: I had been meaning to mail you about the ultras actually. Are they self-suffieient or will there be aid stations along the route providing food/with your own food like Conn?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,418 ✭✭✭Aimman

I might be interested in the 50K, but I'll be arriving back from Germany on the evening of 25th, so I would have to be able to pick up my race number on the Saturday morning, if possible.

Official food and refreshments stations every 2.5k for all participants.
50k and 100k participants also have table for your food as well with your support crew there

    Loops of 5k

Will sort something out for you, won't be able to do it for everyone though;)

Sounds good seb. What's the 5k road surface like? Did I read that it was in a forest?

Pictures of the route are in the race pack on sebfitness here ="http://www.sebfitness.com/sebfitness/events/info pack.html"
The surface of the course is tar and chip, but it is through Portumna Forest park so no worries about traffic for us

Also all kind of technical pacing devices are forbidden, especially by vehicles of all kinds.
Can you expand on this? GPS-based watches? Stopwatches? Heart rate monitors?

Tried to enter the marathon on runireland. There are 3 seperate entry buttons for the 3 different races but all lead to the form for the 100km/ultra and not the marathon. Anyone else have this problem?

The forms works fine I checked and people are entering fine. I think you are relating to the bottom of the page which link to the main event "portumna 100" but at the top of the form it says what you are entering and is very clear at the check out.

They are the international rules which aim to facilitate the race to be affiliated. I will check this and come back to you.

Oh Good God! I have been trying to stay away from marathon websites and here I spot a local marathon and a possible novice intoroduction to ultramarathon at an achievable 50Km. This will be very hard to resist.
Got my achilles sorted yesterday and going to start training soon. Cant quite psyche myself up for the 10km I am down for. Need to have the threat of a marathon hanging over me before i can get out the door. havent run in a week!:(
Is this do-able for a first time ultra wannabe?

    ooooooooooooooooooohhhhh:D
Think I have just found something that makes me want to get out the door. Will chase my sub 4 later in the year. Cant wait for this now. YOu doing it RQ?

By the way - was there an answer for the question about using HRM's or garmins or do I have to buy a regular watch?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,418 ✭✭✭Aimman

I'm not sure if I'd fancy running around a 5k loop ten times though, especially at 6am in the morning, lol. I know its running through a lovely forest area, but when I start recognising trees and stones and the faster runners overtaking regularly, I'd probably lose count of how many lap's I've done had have to start again.

How do you monitor the amount of laps with three events going on at the same time? I know there are timing mats, but how does the individual runners get to keep track of their progress?

I'm thinking either the 100k or the Mourne Way Ultra.

That's what put me off the Anglo Celtic Plate, the bloody laps, but in order to have a race certified you have to do the accurately measured laps, as far as I know anyway. 20 laps would be horrid mentally but that just adds to the challenge doesn't it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,312 ✭✭✭hot to trot

I didnt spot that it was 10 laps of a shorter route. Gosh . NO music or anything like that of any sort for 50km deserves a special medal all of its very own. We do get a medal don't we? I loves me medals:D. Kids can have my jewels and anything of any value I manage to aquire during my lifetime but the medals come into the box with me.

Given that the start is 6am,do people generally stay locally in the hotel or whats the best thing to do? Do people disappear off home afterwards or stay around for the evening? Would hate to sit there on my own yet again if everyone is partying elsewhere.
Now ......better look up training for this;)

From a racing point of view, the shorter the lap, the more interesting the race.

To have a race certified doesn't require laps per se, but the distance must most definitely be accurately measured, and it much easier to accurately measure a short lap than a long loopb/ point to point. (In order to have the 50km and 100km certified they need to be approved by the appropriate ultra running governing body, as they're outside the remit of AI).

Laps are quite advantagous to work with mentally, and allow you to adopt all sorts of mental coping strategies to get you through an ultra.
How do you monitor the amount of laps with three events going on at the same time? I know there are timing mats, but how does the individual runners get to keep track of their progress?

Its a piece of cake if you're doing steady pacing... yet another reason for doing so! That's how I was able to work out my laps in the Celtic 100km last year.

Is the 100K a once-off or will this be an annual event from now on (assuming that it's reasonably successful, of course)?

I would love to do it, but it really does not fit into my calendar for this year. If it's going to be held in future years, on the other hand, I could start planning for it more than 3 months in advance...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 504 ✭✭✭locteau

This was the answer from The IAU (which we are not affiliated, but will apply as soon the AAI is coming back to us if they accreditated our event, only the measurement is officially certified so far)

    "Dear Sebastien,

The ”pacing”- regulations you’re talking about are especially for the IAU Championships, you are free to allow it or not."

Yes this will be an annual event which support the youth Cafe in portumna along with the triathlon. We will also open entries very early next year :)

Generally stupid questions I suppose but here goes :

    1. Should you have a marathon under your belt before you even think about an Ultra of 50k + .

    2. If I was even thinking about a marathon/Ultra in June- Aug, should I abandon any thoughts of a few triathlons in the summer also (I find the more I run the less I want to cycle or swim-dont have the time for it either)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 504 ✭✭✭locteau

By the way - was there an answer for the question about using HRM's or garmins or do I have to buy a regular watch?

Yes it was a few post up and answered by the IAU :p if we were applying to their guidelines. So no problem regarding the HR, Garmin etc....

Regarding the loops, it was made this way to look like a proper ultra, remember this event is made to build up ultra runners ;) and it is much safer for health and safety to have the people supervised up by our medical team and volunteers each lap, you can't compare with a marathon this is going to be long, very long

6 am is simply to give time for people to finish before dark as per many international events (France, Germany etc.... same for Ironman triathlon)

I think Ultra distance were not enough accessible to Irish lads in the past usch as the Adventure races which are poping up every where in the country now, maybe 10 years too late compare to europe. Ultra swimming like I did last year is another one along with Ultra Ironman and ultra running events.

But it is coming, we just have to work together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,312 ✭✭✭hot to trot

You trying to coax more of us into Ultra?

By the way..Whats the toilet situation? I imagine that with all those loops maybe a portaloo might be positioned somewhere?
Also , when people bring food for an ultra- what kind of stuff should we bring?

Toomuch detail. I know a few who started with ultra. Think that as long as you build up the endurance and dont get hung up on the time that it is possible. Thats what I am telling myself anyway :D

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

There are many ultra runner who would never have run a marathon before attempting their first ultra.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 504 ✭✭✭locteau

There will be toilet every 2.5km one will be in the Marina and two portaloos.

Regarding food there will also every 2.5km with water, energy drinks etc.... fruits...... For Ultra runners only there will be tables were you can have your own food and drinks. and there will be a special zone for your team to give support you.

And Yes ultra running is accessible to more athletes, just been kept quiet for too long :)

Ireland has some fantastic athletes all around the country.

    Phew.Thanks for that .:)

Must check the Connemara board. Im sure there is lots of discussion on the kind of food Ultra wannabees should take to suppliment the drinks/gels.

When you talk about "support" team. ????? you mean friends etc that scream and shout encouragement type of thing? Is there something else I should be bringing with me on the day that I might not be aware of
    Apologies for the ultra ignorance.

Generally just in case you need any help, say if its wet and you need a sock/clothes change, help dressing blisters etc etc You'll be fine with the 50k thought they'll just have to stand there in awe of your brilliance. :)

For the 100k does it matter if you don't have a suport team? Also I read that there is no walking alowed, what if you get into the latter stages and are good to finish but maybe need to walk to complete the whole 100 would that be allowed? Any training tip am trying to devise a strategy for sucess with lots of back 2 back LSR's Does anyone have a schedual that they are following and are prepared to share. Am a slow but determined runner!:)

No walkers is only for people who want to race as a walker the full event

This is funny I never thought about it this way. we just could not have walkers entering the event been on the way of the ultra runners.

Regarding training, there is lots of advices on the runireland.com forum and cover lots. there is also a good couple of threads such as the Connemara 100miles or Ultra guys on boards which I am sure will help you like "enduroman" which is a superb athlete, ultraman and more....

Did belfast marathon as training run. At the end I didnt think I would have been able to run more than one more mile. Next day I wasnt a bit sore and even managed an 8 mile run. Fine today too but didnt have time to go out.
I honestly dont see how I could manage to run further, even with three more training runs at 26M!! Getting in a total panic now. should I pull out and defer or just walk when the legs wont run anymore?:(

Typical pre-race nerves. You have LOADS of time, don't worry. Pace yourself on the day and you WILL be fine. You can rest, you can take short walk breaks while you refuel etc.. It'll be a magic day with the three races at once, I wish I was going along.

This might motivate some of you ;)

I just receive the permit number by the official governing body for my marathon and my Ultra running events

They have been sanctioned by The Athletic Association of Ireland.

    Let's celebrate !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 872 ✭✭✭Zuppy

Well done on the Permit. A lot of work involved I bet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 504 ✭✭✭locteau

Yes it was really hard work and personal input.

We know how much runners are looking for events to have a permit. I had so much queries by email asking for it so thought it was relevant to post it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,312 ✭✭✭hot to trot

Excuse the ignorance but what difference does a permit make?

Going to try my first 26 mile training run around a 3 mile circuit this saturday . Dreading it.
Any tips for a first time "lap " virgin?
How is anyone else getting on with their training? I have missed all my runs since sunday and feel like I will never get to the level I should be at to tackle the 50k :(

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

I think you're worrying too much. From your training you are more than capable of running 50k. Trust me, you WILL be fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,312 ✭✭✭hot to trot

Promise? I am so nervous about it . Im like a virgin on a crucial date and I am starting to obsess about it.
Just be grateful I am not doing the 100k or I would be banned form the board altogether!:o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 872 ✭✭✭Zuppy

Excuse the ignorance but what difference does a permit make?

The Permit, apart from a lot of paperwork, means that it is a sanctioned race done to a set standard and measured to a set standard. One of the 'connected' boardsies can explain in detail.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 504 ✭✭✭locteau

The permit is important in the world of running, it shows that the organiser do try to make the event the best they can do respecting some standard in respect of the national rules and guidance.

It is not just about having a finish line and charging people, it means we care about the Athletics in Ireland, but also that we have a duty to the runners who take parts in the event.

Many runners before entering emailed me and asked if I had a AAI permit.

Anyway this is for me :)

Guys I was wondering what kind of Tshirt you would like, a technical (which everybody does anymore) or a really good quality Cotton Tshirt with some nice design and printing on it ?

Do you want the name of all the participant on it ? or a nice simple and smart design ?

Finally, just let you know that you will be able to get High resolution Pictures for free to you email or by CD after the event.
