Anna Mears of Australia wins the 500m TT - no Pendleton - GB put a youngster in for the experience

Sprint events in track cycling are about the only place that happens.

An interesting slot on Jason Queally on the BBC coverage. He had retired from international cycling with a view to piloting a paralympic tandem at London 2012, but has now fought his way back into the main team (in the team pursuit), and looks like a contender for the main Olympic team (he will be 42 by the 2012 Olympics).

I caught most of this last night on BBC2 (no sky sports for me), quite enjoyed it having been on a velodrome recently. That guy Cameron Meyer was quite impressive in the points race, made it look so easy to power ahead early on and build up an uncatchable lead.

Its a shame that the individual pursuit is being dropped for the Olympics. I find that the most interesting one to watch.

The track itself doesnt look too intimidating though.

Looking forward to see tonight's highlights when I get home after work, got someone to tape it for me.

EurosporT very critical of Japanese rider. Believed he was up to something. Thought it was a bit weird he was smiling so much after. Great for NZ and their new record

tandem - usually blind or partially sighted on rear and a ex racer on the front (able bodied)

No, the pilots are able bodied, the stokers are visually impaired. There is a two-year waiting period during which the able bodied rider must not have competed at a certain level, the idea is you can't just stick a current top racer on the front.

No, outdoor tracks in Dublin and Belfast and I think that is it.

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

Craig MacLean is also aiming to be a tandem pilot at the 2012 paralympics. They need to have been out of international able-bodied competition for a minimum 2 years before they can compete, hence Queally will be unable to compete in the 2012 paralympics if he stays in Team GB for much longer.

That's right, although there are proposals to build what I understand will be an indoor track at Dundalk

The nearest indoor tracks are in Manchester and Newport, and they can be ridden by anyone (apparently the Danish Prime Minister regularly rides the track which is currently being used for the World Championships)

What did the eurosport guys thing the Japanese rider was "up to"? It looked like a smile of embarrassment to me...

And if you go into your local post office and ask about Dwars door Vlaanderen they'll know exactly what you're on about. Right?

Great finish for the mens Keirin, glad a tuned in.
As for the crafty Japanese I think it was him that got the dq in the finals.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,450 ✭✭✭Harrybelafonte

Eurosport: fellow commentator said he was very cynical, he seemed to believe that he wanted to save himself for another event, but didn't want to be seen to not try in the the Keirin, it seemed like an odd thing to say, but they seemed pretty peed with him. All seems a bit dramatic to me.

Keirin so much easier to watch, I'd need to keep notes for the Madison. Only Americans could make something so simple so complicated :)

It'll probably be similar to the one in Eamonn Ceannt Park.

The one at Meadowbank originally built for the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970 is wooden. The problem is that any rain makes it pretty much unrideable, and wood takes time to dry-out

its a pity mick wallace was not into cycling he might have built a cycling track, in wexford in stead of another soccer stadium .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,270 ✭✭✭spyderski

a cycling track would be relatively cheap to build, but can't see any Mick Wallaces investing in anything like this now - in wexford or anywhere else.

Only way we will get a track indoors is if we can find someone from limerick and JPMcM takes an interest.

Though I would think there are plenty of empty Buildings that might be big enough to take one empty around the place

So what did everyone think? Bauge V Perkins was great to watch.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,235 ✭✭✭iregk

They have been pretty good over all in fairness. First time I think I've really watched track cycling with any genuine interest.

The Madison is just a bizarre event and I still have no idea whats going on.

Can anyone tell me also. I'm not sure of the name of the event but what is the purpose of the chap on the red motor bike cross breed in front of the pack?

Thats the one. What is the point of having the pace setter. Why not just let the cyclists at it from the start. If someone goes too early they will burn out and be caught in any case.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,450 ✭✭✭Harrybelafonte

I can't really answer the significance of the derny, but I think in Japan they use another rider, so it's always paced. Maybe someone else could explain it.
