True to a point. I ordered a second hand record from the UK recently but that managed to slip through without a VAT charge.

I haven't followed the current procedures and I have a question for the people in the know.

Ordered a CD about a month back from the UK. Was shipped via royal mail on 14/03 but I haven't heard anything since neither from anPost nor from the seller. Could this still be in the channels or may I just forget about it now?

    Seller has the below conditions.

All import and export costs are the responsibility of the customer. We have no control over the length of time your order will be held at customs for clearance and suggest that you contact them directly for further information. We mark all packages for overseas delivery with contents and order value marked accordingly.

If there was tracking they will be able to tell you where it is. You could try ringing an post and asking if there is an item waiting for you from the UK.

If they can't check and/or if there is no tracking, at this stage I would get on to the seller. It doesn't matter what they say when it comes to lost items, if they don't offer a replacement or a full refund, get on to paypal or ebay if they are the platform it was sold on etc.

If by "mark all packages for overseas delivery with contents and order value marked accordingly" they meant just a printed customs label but they didn't do the electronic declaration then An Post will likely return to sender.

I doubt they did. Its a low cost item - barely a tenner - and shipping is low cost too.

Probably on its way back then.

Hi, I was sent a replacement item from the UK due to an the original item being damaged in the post.

I paid the fees on the original item but didn't expect to pay fees on the replacement but An Post sent me the charges.

I queried this first through the chat function, who couldn't help but supplied me with an email for the An Post Customs crew.

    ecommchargequery@anpost.ie

Sent them an email on the 29/3/22 and there has been no replies to this or any of the emails sent since. The charges are due to be paid on 21/4/22, any advice on how to get in touch with them?

Try Twitter. I went to them before when my email was left unanswered to the same address.

If they haven’t made it very clear on the paperwork that it is a FOC replacement due to damage, they have to charge VAT and their charge on it. If the shipper had done this, send through the invoice that shows its a replacement through to the email address. They take weeks to do anything BTW.

They haven’t made it clear at all but the seller is available to talk to.

    I’ll try Twitter thanks

an post are not going to contact the seller to check. the seller needs to mark the parcel appropriately. if they haven't done this then they are the problem.

I ordered something through addresspal and got a txt informing me of the customs charge. I went to the an post website and made the payment as normal. A few hours later I received a txt from an 089 number with the following. I didn't click on link but a bit scary how I would get a txt like this the same day I get a legit customs charge message.

AN POST: Your package has a €1.90 unpaid fee. To pay this visit https://anpost-customs-pay.cc . If this is not paid the package will be returned to sender.

An item ordered via Ebay USA's Global Shipping Programme has arrived without an issue. Delivered by DPD.

Coincidence, nothing more. Those scam texts are doing the rounds.

I learned the hard way on this that you are just better to pay and try to claim back after.

I complained about charged being levied on a book, they didn't get back to me within the 2 wks I had to pay, my book was sent back.

I ordered it again, paid this time, got my book, emailed and they agreed VAT should not have been charged on it and they would refund it.

I got the refund in the post via cheque last wk, 6 months after I paid it!

I paid it again and I’m waiting on a receipt so I can get the refund from the retailer. It’s very slow

i was looking at buying speakers for home theatre from UK. it is around 650 euros.

found one seller who was willing to ship to ireland from UK.

    the seller told me -

Being over the IOSS rate (150Euro) I would supply ex vat and duty and you would have to pay the courier those costs. The one advantage is there is no Duty on speakers, just sales tax/vat.

    is this correct?

if they arrive in ireland via dpd or dhl for example, how would they calculate the vat and would they leave out customs duty?

has anyone bought speakers from UK?

First post on this thread gives you everything you need. You will have to search the Taric to find the code for speakers to ensure there is no duty payable.

    I'd rather go Richersounds route.

Just regarding the changes on duties for importing goods from outside EU.

I occasionally get little bits on aliexpress , packets of bolts , specific screws etc , comes in usually around €1 to €4 delivered. So shouldn't an post be charging me a processing fee plus a percentage of the total cost of the goods? I have yet to see this happen ,is it something they will be getting around to eventually or is it just that it wouldn't be possible to manage given the amount of small mail items coming in from china?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,173 ✭✭✭dam099

No, the changes were at least in part targeted at the small packages which previously were being exempted from VAT.

AliExpress now include VAT in their pricing and remit to the respective EU tax authorities. The (electronic) customs declarations would reflect this allowing them straight through without the need for An Post to process anything.

AliExpress are in the IOSS so what you have purchased should already have the VAT included, hence demand from An Post for customs.

What do you do if the postman wants vat on a US item and there's none due?

Do you pay and reclaim off revenue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,916 ✭✭✭✭ohnonotgmail

postmen don't ask for money at the door any more. you get a notice either by post, email or text. If you dont pay the parcel gets returned.

Ah ok so that stopped recently, not that long since they were asking at the door

Just want to check something here.

If I order an item for $150 excluding shipping, it appears to be under the limit for customs duty but when I look at the example on the revenue website when it calculates the customs duty it's based on the price inclusive of shipping.

Is it right that once the price is under €150 without shipping then there's no customs even if it's over €150 with shipping and that customs is only charged on the shipping inclusive amounts if you go over the €150 without shipping?

    Thank you!
