Irish/British V's Rest of Europe

I think the Irish and British have very similar traits: the same humour, enjoy going to the pub for a 'few' pints (and getting pissed), food (chippers everywhere) and we generally don't look after ourselves. Obesity is very widespread here..

The rest of the Europeans seem to have a better taste in food and eat better, dress better, look better and are more attractive looking, and are socially a lot better behaved. Culturally, they're just classier people really.

Did you ever watch those TV series' on Sky, where the Brits and Irish travel to Ibiza to get pissed for two weeks? Christ, it's so embarrassing to look at.. Or did you ever spend a sober night out in Cork or Dublin to witness the drunken frolics of our people? Sad really.

Jesus that's an interesting observation you made. Unfortunately banging my head against a wall repeatedly is more fun than reading or participating in this thread, so I'm going to go and do that instead.

Do you have a point to make other than mainland Europeans are more cultured than the UK & Ireland?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,228 ✭✭✭epgc3fyqirnbsx

In a very general sense, that's pretty true.

But for sh1ts and giggles Irish and brits are best. On travelling you see Spanish, german and French who will not spend more than €3 per day, live on pasta and sauce. Which is great for longevity of a holiday but sometimes, when all you have is €100, just go fucking spend it in a few hours!

I'm sure we can look at parts of Paris, Berlin, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Amsterdam etc. etc. and see similar poor behaviour and lack of 'class' i suppose.

Class is a subjective word. Means different things to different people.

Hmmmm - I kind of get what you are getting at.
It is not about being cultured I think - I think the irish and brits love to get smashed at the weekend, and a holiday is just a 14 day weekend.

The europeans are more laid back and reserved. But this i feel is true about how they work, laid back and reserved. Suppose it might be hard to work in the heat and this style infultraits their entire way of life.
The irish and brits I think have more of a work you b@lls of during the week and go nuts at the weekend.

So we have two choices lazy or crazy? What you want to be?

All Irish people I know only eat the finest of foods, drink moderately of the finest wines and discuss only the most highbrow subjects.

Perhaps you are associating yourself with the wrong sort of people OP?

You just made an observation which is true. Irish/Brits are fatter, uglier, get drunker, and eat worse food than the sophisticated French/Italians etc.
Sin é! Nothing to talk about!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 453 ✭✭gonnaplayrugby

they better in every single way. they so much more relaxed and laid back.

and also a certain class of brits see themselves as more cultured than the french and italians.

Yes AnonoBoy, but they only seem to exist on the internet, places like boards.ie. I've never actually met any. :)

Thanks. If you're not aware of what classy is, then I don't know really what to say. Subjective? Okay, whatever..

the way i look at it yes britain and ireland are seperate from mainland europe both by geography and seperate culture, i had a conversation with my mates latvian girlfriend, they tend to marry younger at like 22 ur married and tend to have only 1 partner and its almost like an arranged marraige in some european states, i also have noticed that it seams to be perfectly ok for some european men to call women B***ches and Whores and that women are generally supressed both in the relationship and in working jobs, i also notice in spain there is a lot of open prostition and it dosent seam bother the police, in ireland and the uk its different in that way your far more likely to find a single unmarried, carreer woman with a kid & mainland europe i find to be differnent like that, its like its more rigid, its hard to explain but i have met a lot of forign women who dont want to go back home as they would be told to get married and ther family would not be proud of them as they dont have any children yet,...and there only like 25!they also feel the opportunites are much better for women in ireland and the uk....

I am aware of what it is, but you've just given a list of broad generalisations and definied a type of people as being classier than others. There are plenty of customs on mainland Europe which could be thought of as less 'classy' than here. But people on mainland Europe might not agree as it is part of their culture.

I have Dutch and Polish friends are both are pretty shocked when they witness some of the behaviour in our country - drunk people urinating on the streets, litter louts just throwing their wrappers away, the general unkemptness of our towns and even countryside. We're certainly the least cultured country in Europe, i think that's pretty obvious.

You've made a point about making money in a discussion about culture and class. Doesn't require much of a retort.

Seriously, tell them to lighten up, the litter thing pisses me off too but we know how to have fun here at least, and I for one like going out and getting drunk, it doesn't mean I misbehave

I lived in Holland for a year and they are the only ones who I can really compare to.

Yes, we have more loutish behaviour etc. but when it comes to manners, the Dutch have a lot to learn (whether you consider that part of class is up to you). They say it's just because the Dutch say what the think but the majority of time I just found it rude for the sake of it, took a while to get used to. Plus, I seen people p***ing in the street on Queen's Day and it wasn't an isolated incident.

Dutch cities are stunningly well-kept though.

To be honest, you can be very highly educated, enjoy good wine and olives, read Dostoevsky and go to the Opera

And also get fucking smashed the odd weekend and have a kebab then p1ss your pants

There's a whole range of experiences out there, try them all for life is short

Cheers for that. 'Classy' is a wildly misunderstood definition, and we all need clarification of what it actually means. Okay.

You shouldn't p1ss your pants though, just p1ss up against the taxi office window. The women love it.

The rest of Europe tend to only wear tracksuits when sport is actually being played.

They also tend not to wear pyjames to the supermarkets, unless of course they are stark raving mad.

have you been to paris or barcelona?????

Dublin is scary to an outsider, so in any capital city, tracksuit wearing scumbags is a worldwide thing

I think it's your ultra generalisation that is irksome to some. Imagine coming on here and saying that Europeans are better looking and more cultured than Africans. You'd be shot (a virtual shooting mind).

Simple answer is you see what you want to see

On a youth level, from my travelling experiences, better craic out of irish and british but that is probably because we have the same sense of humour

As for class, thats subjective. And stereotypical. I have met french who were real good fun, would go mad then also be 'classy' in the european style way come evening

You can do all these things, you don't have to pigeon hole yourself to either a 'p1sshead' or an arty farty classy type
