Gowran Park scraped past Wexford in the FBD Barton Cup first round this evening, 3-2.
With an away draw, managed to win two matches away, lost the first game at home and the deciding match won on the 19th hole.

I wasn't playing... haven't played much this year due to injury and stuff so didn't put myself forward for it. I watched from the 8th onwards at home.

In Barton Cup, Enniscorthy (2008 champs) lost to Borris at the weekend. They'd 3 away matches and all games went to the home team.

Grange beat Trinity with 3 matches at home, while Rathfarnham beat Dublin Mountain in the preliminary round, but then lost to South County in Round 1, with 3 matches at home.

Blessington Lakes, who got to the final of the Garden Trophy, lost to Stackstown in the opening round.

Milltown being beaten by Tulfaris was a fairly surprising result.

    Also, Woodbrook beat Woodenbridge.

Indeed, and we started the match one game down as we only had nine players! One became very sick in the morning and was admitted to hospital I think.

Gowran Park beat New Ross in the Irish Mixed Foursomes... won both away matches.
I was playing against a woman who had just gone to +1 handicap after winning the Cork Scratch Cup at the weekend, shooting rounds of -3 and -1. Short game to die (or kill) for... was sick saying "thats good" after she chipped from anywhere to stone dead practically every time. Faded a shot from 170 yards around a tree to 3 ft.
Managed to win on the 18th.

In the Barton Cup, New Ross were playing Callan out in front of us and New Ross won so we'll face them in the next round.

Gowran Park won in the South Leinster also this weekend.

Not sure but I think it's singles matchplay for 16 handicappers and upwards.... not an 'official' GUI competition but it's run by Carlow Golf Club.

Heard a story today about the Corballis/Royal Dublin match. Apparently Royal Dublin submitted their team to the GUI the night before the match. On the day Royal Dublin had just sealed their win of the day to seal their game 3-2 when the Corballis officials pulled Royal Dublin up on the fact that one of the guys who had played for them had not been on the submitted team sheet.

There was apparently some very annoyed people because Corballis had knew about the change from the get-go, but had waited until after the game to pull RD up on it.

Bit rough on RD, but then they had broken the rules. Not sure whether it was bad form by only bringing it up after they'd lost, or whether they were right to play the game first and try and win it fair and square, with the rule break in their back pocket as a fall-back. Thoughts?

You don't submit your team to the GUI for the Barton Cup. Team managers exchange teams a minimum of 15 mins before tee off.

Lucan 2-3 The Castle this evening. Deciding match in Lucan went to the 21st hole.

Apologies. Royal Dublin had submitted their team to Corballis the night before. Obviously they didn't need to, but for whatever reason they did.

Re Royal Dublin, the story I heard was that they wrote the names down in the wrong order, so basically put down that 2 low handicappers were playing together, and 2 higher handicappers playing together, as opposed to one of each with the other. Smells of too many chiefs to be honest, they beat Corballis well in most of the matches, real sickener.

Bunclody beat Gowran Park in the Mixed this evening. I was due to be playing in Bunclody but injured my back so couldn't play... lost all 3 away games. Bummer.

It was actually the higher handicappers names they mixed up, it was twigged because they kept calling one of them a different name to the name declared on the sheet. The fact that Corballis questioned it meant that the match had to be forfeited. I also heard that Royal Dublin cancelled the planned dinner and wouldn't allow them in the clubhouse.

I heard the story from one of the players and nearly pissed myself laughing!

Must say I played Royal Dublin in a club match in the past year or so and whatever my preconceived thoughts were (oh god not this shower of stuck up gits!)... the lads were honestly a nice bunch and very accommodating, even the other members in the locker rooms not involved with the team were decent and went out of thier way to talk to us.. to our surprise! So cant really say anything bad from my experience.

They rang a GUI official when the matches were out around the 7th/8th. He explained that they were in breach of the competition rules and the penalty was disqualification. They rang him back 30 mins later claiming that they could still win the tie by winning their 3 home matches. It had to be explained to them again that the penalty applied to the team rather than individuals.
Contrast this with Stackstown. They have a pairing in the first round of 4 and 10. While preparing for the second round they discovered that the 10 played off 9 for a few days last year. They immediately declared the situation and disqualified themselves.

New Ross beat Woodenbridge in the Provincial Towns Cup.

I had 4 hours notice and considering I'm 13 h'cap I did ok bringing my man to the 18th.

The Curragh beat Woodenbridge in the South Leinster.

Blessington Lakes, who got to the final of the Garden Trophy, lost to Stackstown in the opening round.

Unfortunately Stackstown had to DQ themselves due to an unforeseen handicap error. Blessington Lakes now find themselves in the last 16 of the Barton Cup after wins against Slade Valley and neighbours Tulfarris,

From the Garden County Series, Winners Arklow and Runners Up Blessington remain, a good reflection of the Garden County Trophy and what it is about. It would be great to meet Arklow in the Quarters :)

I wouldn't quite call it revenge, more like i'd love to give them a better match than we did in the garden county final!

    From the conditions pdf....

not less than 30 minutes before the start of the match.

    ....
    15. a) Except in the case of sudden illness or other
emergency which is considered by the Championship

Conditions must have been rough for awhile with those heavy showers. Will/can Gowran do it again!!?

Enniscorthy went down to Wexford in the Leinster Fourball and Waterford in the Moore Cup. They won through the qualifiers of the Pierce Purcell Shield.

At least two copies of the terms and conditions applying to all competitions under the the GUI's wing are sent to the Honorary Secretary of each club with the sheets of the draw, ( at least in leinster they are), These books should be made available to all team captain's but probably are thrown to one side as most clubs look only at the handicap qualifying conditions
