My Monkey Baby

God bless More 4 and it's weird documentaries...

So, the newest craze in the States (where else?) is adopting a monkey baby.

This is a new solution for couples that can't have their own babies, and also popular for women with empty nest syndrome. Reliving the feeding, brushing, washing, changing days of a newborn. Even brushing the monkey's teeth! Retired couples that want to dote on someone for the rest of their life. Seriously spoiled monkies living on junk food and such.

This man was on saying his new wife's monkey baby is his step daughter and claims "don't call her a monkey, that's my daughter!" She was bridesmaid at their wedding. One monkey mother was on painting her monkey babies nails, dressing her up & puting make up on her!

These monkey babies sell for up to €4,500 and breeders are making a fortune. Poor monkies in cages. They don't bond with their own mothers because the humans want to be their "mommies". Distressing stuff.

So anyone here interested in a monkey baby some day?! I think I'd rather adopt a child or be a foster parent. This is very odd stuff indeed.

Edit: Wtf? One woman thinks her monkey baby took her pills so she rang an "animal psychic" to ask her if she can ask Silly Willy if he took the hormone pills or not. You couldn't make this stuff up.

I don't see the problem with the adoption of monkey babies (hey, it's basically the same as any other pet, right?) but when people start acting as if they're human it gets a bit too creepy and weird for my taste

Yeah, I love how this, and not ringing the vet was the logical next step for this woman! :D

    What kind of monkeys?

If it's chimps (or anything similarly-sized), that could end really, really badly..

    They're capuchin monkies.

One woman has had one for 18 years, she says she's her life and doesn't know what she'd do without her. Eternal baby...

Didn't Bubbles Michael Jacksons Monkey go mad and try to kill himself?
It seems cruel to keep a wild animal as a pet.

Indeed, if what happened Charla Nash is anything to go by...

google the story but if you're easily upset by people with extreme facial injuries then dont, it was horrendous what happened her

    Chimps are apes, not monkeys.

I saw a disturbing picture that someone forwarded on in a "WTF?" image collection email of a woman in her forties breast-feeding a human infant on one side and a capuchin monkey on the other side. Weird stuff.

I saw a show once about fake babies too. There's a woman who makes extremely lifelike baby dolls and sells them. The women who were buying them gave them names and personalities and treated them in every way like a real child.

I love monkeys and apes, (and I know this might be a bit off topic) but I'd rather see them happy in the wild than chained up in a house.

For a moment I though that was a seriously capable adult monkey. Then I realised. :(

i watched a programme on this, it's very sad and creepy. i dont think it's right to dress up monkeys and paint their nails and stuff, not fair on the animals. i would love a pet monkey but not like this:D

I watched that show too.. couldn't believe it!

I thought that the woman who couldn't have kids and did shows with her monkeys at kids schools just so that she could spend time with kids was really creepy.

I watched it too. Well, bits of it.

In one way I was disturbed. Very disturbed.

On the other I found myself thinking that these women and men clearly have serious issues. There are loads of people who have pet dogs who are their "babies". A friend of mine gets someone to babysit her dog if she's going out early as the dog is used to them being there from 5pm to 10pm and would miss them if they go out at 8pm. She's fairly normal, has a normal job and a happy marriage but no kids yet. Her doggy is her baby for now.

This is the same really. Maybe more extreme but if I couldn't have kids and really wanted them who knows how I'd react. I'd probably get a dog.

these women just struck me as being very sad and lonely and looking for an outlet for their love and mothering.

(hey, it's basically the same as any other pet, right?)

Not quite. Animals like dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, horses, etc. have been domesticated for centuries (well, not sure about the guinea pigs, but they've been domesticated long enough anyway). Monkeys haven't, at least not on a long enough scale, and chances are the origins of these monkeys' parents is that they were ripped from the wild, or are only 2nd or 3rd generation. This means they are NOT good pets and still could be very wild and thus very unpredictable and possibly even dangerous.
    Chimps are apes, not monkeys.

Oh I'm aware, but figured I'd clarify anyway.

Anyway, these women need to be getting help, not torturing poor monkeys.

I dont like thi the idea of monkeys being used as children is not good they should be in the clans eating bugs and stuff and climing trees not beheaving like human's.

    Its disgusting.
