Legally, I think it is up to the car driver to stop or avoid pedestrians, whether they are in ones or twos. As the person in control of the lethal machine, you should make sure that you are always in a position to avoid hazards, whether they are walkers, or animals jumping out of the hedge.

So it's all right to knock over pedestrians because they know what they are doing?
My niece and nephew live less than a mile from their school but can't walk there because of drivers hurtling along a narrow country road.

Just because people drive badly, and pedestrians have to be defensive doesn't mean it's right or should be encouraged.

There are enough main motorways and duel carriageways in this country now that you rarely have to drive along a back road. If you choose to drive along a country road, you drive appropriately, at a speed where you can avoid children, walkers or sheep.

Why is it up to the pedestrians to read the road, and judge the speed of cars (one of which must have been behind them) instead of you?

From the rules of the road

"Do not walk more than two abreast. If the road is narrow or carries heavy traffic, you should walk in single file."

It would be safer for everyone if they just walked single file

What really annoys me are cyclists. They deliberately find the smallest road possible, and block traffic on both sides. Evveryone knows cyclists hate car drivers

Yes, because they can kill us, and often drive as if they intend to.

You obviously live in Dublin !

I think it is more a case of everyone should be taught the rules of the road and not about cars / bikes / pedestrians. Way too many people don't know the first thing about it (and drivers / cyclists are the worst !). But if you are a pedestrian, please wear something that gets you seen, not a black jacket, black hat, with you walking the same direction as traffic!

I'm from a rural area and believe me the cars would run you off the road if they could so it's not exactly a relaxing walk if you keep having to jump into the hedge everything two cars are coming in opposite directions.

I personally think that car drivers in Ireland seem to think they are king of the road, (I'm also a car driver) and pedestrians should get out of their way. I've been to other European countries where it's drilled into drivers that they have to respect pedestrians and cyclists.

Unfortunately, because we don't have the same education here car drivers think they have priority which in turn means cyclists (cycling clubs in particular) and pedestrians to a much lesser extent become territorial when they're out and take over the road.

I suppose it's a me fein attitude that's prevalent in this country in general but I do think that a bit more education on courtesy would help the situation.
