2 cycle races are taking place this weekend

The Harry Reynolds Memorial starts at 3pm on Saturday at the Man O' War, heading down to the Skerries/Lusk (R127) road, where it takes a left towards Skerries then turns left back up past Milverton NS and up to Blackhills then left to Cross of the Cage and then left again, past Carney's tree until it meets the original circuit, heading back to the Skerries/Lusk road.

There will be 7 laps, and the race will probably take about 90 minutes. Given the relatively short lap this will be a good race for spectators to see some regular action

The Ben McKenna & Jazzer Wherity Memorials races starts at Ringcommons Sports Centre at 11am on Sunday, and will probably go on for nearly 3 hours

Full route details can be found here

In both cases, I suspect there may be some traffic disruption

Just a quick reminder that the Market is to move back to George's Square tomorrow morning.

For those who don't know where it is it's in the centre of the town at the library steps & beside the Bracken Court. There is underground parking for a small fee at the entrance to the Bracken Court.

There is genuinely good value to be had at the market and remember you're supporting local traders.

    Note
I'm not affiliated with the market in any way but I think it's a brilliant initiative for the community and my pocket. :D

    Regular Stalls include:

Fresh Fruit & Veg from North Dublin Market Growers
Fresh Seasonal Fruit & Veg from local residents
    Bread
    General cakes & bakery
    Cheese
    Organic butcher
    Balbriggan Fishermen
    Chutneys, olives & preserves
    Organic eggs, milk etc

That's all I can remember off the top of my head but if anyone thinks any other stalls deserve a mention pm me and I'll include them in my post.

A tea party in aid of Pieta House will take place on Saturday 29th of May at Station Road Lusk.

Pieta House is the centre for prevention of self harm or suicide.

This is a very worthy cause so why not drop in for a cup of tea and support the tea party. Just about everyone knows a family who have been affected by self harm or suicide.

This is the second year this event has taken place at Station Road and last year it was a great success. Grainne Bollard is the organiser and has plenty of activities laid on for kids.

The cyclists are expected in Skerries between 2.30 and 3pm and will do three circuits, each taking 20 minutes, from Cross of the Cage through to Killalane, Heathstown and on to the Skerries/Lusk road into Skerries.

This year a dedicated area for viewers with immobility and disability will be provided close to the finish line. This area must be occupied by 12.30 as strand street will close to all trafic at 12.30.

As in previous years, a large number of activities will be hosted on the day by individual community groups, making for a community "street party" on Strand Street

I haven't seen anyone post about the festival in Malahide this weekend. I think it's been quite badly advertised. It's a revival of the festival they used to have years ago. It's a pity it's on the same weekend as the Dun Laoghaire festival so I hope people support it.

An International Idea adapted to Local Settings

"A stranger is a friend you haven't met yet."

Balbriggan Library and Fingal LEADER Partnership have teamed up to look at setting up a ‘Living Library’ project which will take place in November. The idea of a Living Library projected originally came from a Danish Youth organisation “Stop the Violence”. They ran a small scale project in conjunction with a local festival who housed the event and it was soon realised the potential was huge. It has since been ran in a much larger scale at places such as the Szignet festival in Budapest, The Rock in Rio event in Lisbon, the Northbridge Festival in Copenhagen and more. Energy and interest has grown rapidly as people realise the benefits of breaking down barriers to information and social interaction in such a simple format.

Living Library is an opportunity for intercultural learning and personal development aimed at people who usually have little access to or time for non-formal educational programmes. The project works with ‘Live Books’ who are volunteers from the community representing a stereotype. This could include a gay person, a lone parent, a migrant, a blonde or anyone who another person may have a misguided opinion on based upon one particular characteristic. People can then hire out their live books for a certain period of time which means they can sit and chat and ask questions which they never would have had the chance to before. Questions such as ‘What was it like for you to come out?’ or ‘When did you become blind?’ Do you know what colour looks like?’ can give a great insight into the lives of the volunteer. The idea is the renter will get information relating to the stereotype but also realised other qualities and skills the ‘live book’ has that shapes them as an individual.

The event will run in Balbriggan Library with all renters and live books in the same room to keep the atmosphere informal and safe as well as social and enjoyable. At the moment Fingal LEADER Partnership and Balbriggan Library are recruiting for volunteers who would like to be a ‘Live Book’ for the day. We have a list of suggested books but if you don’t fall into these categories and have a suggestion please do not hesitate to contact us as we would be delighted with new ideas. The list of volunteers being sought are; a person with a disability, a gay person, a member of the travelling community, a lone parent, a refugee, an asylum seeker, an older person, a person who has or had issues with mental health problems, a teenager and a blonde. The event will run in November for one Saturday morning. We will provide some training about what to expect and ensure that all volunteers have support for the event. If you would like to be part of this exciting event or would like more information, please contact Helen at 01 8020484 or Assumpta at 01 8704401.
