    Hi,
I've been working out steadily since January and now I want to start taking some whey protein. Iv lost 10kg since October, I was very sick, on a lot of medication and put on a lot of weight, I'm now back to a satisfactory weight but would still like to get down to about 75 or 76kg. I want to put on some muscle and tone up. Maximuscle seems pretty good but also expensive, USN seems cheaper. Iv never used supplements before so I'm not so sure what to buy. Im 19, 5' 10'', 79kg about 19% bodyfat. Also could anyone recommend other supplements, multivitamins etc to take alongside Whey.

Any advice or tips much appreciated.

Well done on your progress so far!

Maximuscle are very expensive alright and you are over paying for what you get. If you are going for a big brand USN are a good call. You get good quality suppements (well their proteins anyway) and the price is ok, not the cheapest you'll find but nothing crazy.

Nutrition x are a very good brand also and are an Irish company, similar quality to usn and a bit cheaper. Typically you will get 4lbs of their whey for the same price as 2lb of maximuscle, they are that pricey as they are well marketed and advertise a lot. (btw i tend to use their "matrix" protein when leaning up so just a thought if your aim is to go to 75kg and keep the muscle)

Places like my protein are good value if you are buying in bulk but if youa re just starting out buy small - medium quantities to see what you like.

Just like protein any other supps you use will depend on your diet and if there is a need to supplement. Usually and omega 3 supplement of some sort will help but again it depends on your training and typical daily nutrition.

    I buy http://www.bodyactive-online.co.uk/Shopping/PdNutriSport-Whey.asp

It's got a nice taste IMO and comes with a free tub of creatine.

I mix a heaped tea spoon of creatine 4g, 1 rounded teaspoon of glutamine, 50grams on glucose, scoop of whey(40g), then top it up with water.
It's a great post workout shake that gives me everything I need.

Preworkout I just have 1/2 scoop of whey with 1/2 scoop of glucose in a little water, maybe a banana.

I'm looking at a 50:50 mix of glucose(25g):maltodextrin(25g) instead of just the glucose. I hear it's a better mix.

Whey tends to last a long time so for me, the important thing is taste.

Why do you need to take protein supplements? Can't you just eat a few steaks or other high protein food? I'm not taking the mick here, I genuinely don't understand.

For me it comes down to the following:
    Convenience
    Cost
Speed of absorption (to a lesser extent)

Post workout is when you're body is on a knife edge.
Get the shake in asap. But don't take my word for it, look it up.
The shake I recommended allows faster recovery, better muscle gains and a reduction of muscle soreness and hopefully the ability to do an extra rep or 2, than you would normally. But it is my measurments meant for someone my size with my lean muscle mass taken into account. It's a bit of trial and error getting it right.

Whey's amino acids are quickly broken down and used to build muscle, the simple carbs (glucose) speeds this process. by the time a steak has been digested it's too late! You've missed the window. A shake contains very little fibre either. This is the one time when fibre isn't good. It slows down digestion.
Fats also slow down the digestion process so of course they shouldn't be taken directly after a workout either.

Sorry op for invading your thread.. I felt I needed a supplement as I eat very little high grade protein (veggie who only recently began eating fish). I was getting stupid sugar cravings which I put down to poor general nutrition.

I just bought my first whey supplement (Kinetica) which Im finding hard to stomach, goes down ok, then I feel slightly ill for about an hour. First, is this normal, do they all do that or is it just this brand, or me? From reading here, it seems to be the thing to take it straight after a training session, is it worth taking it before?

Plenty of protein in nuts and beans. I wouldn't consider making a supplement my primary source of protein, but as far as fast soluble protein it's hard to beat whey. If you aren't eating meat I'd be more concerned with my vitimin intake. make sure you're getting vitimin B + iron + zinc at least.

I also would not consider eating fish more than 3 days per week. I've heard a few horror stories about people eating just fish (mercury levels etc).

Sugar cravings eh? That's tough. Sugar is bad plain and simple, but we all get cravings. Try and get you're sugar fix from fruit.

For good quality protein and supplements at good prices I'll always use myprotein.co.uk I seriously don't see the need to be spending lots of money on BIG brand names.

Also if you really wanna buy in bulk (40-50lbs) I use Trueprotein.com. Shipping can be seriously expensive though.
