Hi, if you bought an 02 Irl iphone from adverts and have been using it for the last 8 months or so with o2 on one of their bill plans(but not official iphone plans) is it possible to get the unlock to enable using local sims when travelling?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,605 ✭✭✭✭banie01

Darryl, First off thanks for sharing the news!
Secondly, is there any way of having the iphone unlocked officially if the stated requirements are not met? i.e phone bought on prepay, immediately jailbroken and original o2 sim never used and no longer available?
    Thanks again!
    Banie

I can request it for you anyway. If there is any issues you will be sent a text message and I can look into it further for you then. I can't foresee any problem though.

Your phone will not meet the requirements as you have not topped up with the required amount. Sorry you will have to stick with the JB option unless you decide to use O2 again :)

I bought my SpeakEasy iPhone 3GS several months ago from O2 Ireland but I haven't bought much credit for it. If I top up by 150 euro, will that definitely qualify me to get my phone unlocked?

Also, are you unlocking 3GS models or just older models?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,587 ✭✭✭✭guil

i have a 3gs that is gettin unlocked, not sure about the credit but i imagine so

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 377 ✭✭OI

I had an 18 month contract on a 3g that finished on the 4th march at which point I moved to speakeasy. The text told me I need to top up by €150. Surely to god this does not apply to me, I've already spent over a grand on the thing straight into o2 coffers, I'm fairly feckin fuming I might add. Hence the following

Before I go ahead and give this a go can you just reassure me of something, unlocking it won't affect my current plan and I can continue using my iPhone as-is on my current plan without incurring any extra charges?

You see I only want to unlock it so I can put a prepaid sim in when I travel but I love the O2 service I get when I'm at home

It does nothing but allow you to use other sim cards.

i would like to find what is the story with an iphone that has been replaced by an insurance company because i sent a request in on the 11th to get my iphone unlocked and got the following email back.

    Hello,

O2 have no record of iPhone IMEI 011xxxxxxxxxxxx on file. Verify your O2
IMEI by dialling *#06# on the device to be unlocked and, if it is an O2
Ireland device, log a new request.

If your device is locked to another network, you must contact that network
operator to obtain a network unlock code.

    Yours sincerely

    O2 Customer Care
    http://www.o2.ie/help

So i logged a new request on the 16th am i going to get the same answer again

yay, that is good news, i tought o2 would of put up an awful lot more of a challenge in allowing us to unlock them.

    Hi guys,

My iPhone 3gs was robbed last saturday night (devastated as you can imagine) but i have bought a 3g one on adverts yesterday. just querying whether i can use the topups i had on my other phone to unlock this new 3g one as I had planned to unlock the 3gs for travelling this summer.

    Thanks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 257 ✭✭dougs09

I can't get into the iPhone unlock request page on the o2 forums, so i sent a PM to the both of ye on to get the request done, cheers.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4 dxxley

i sent them both a pm last week and still got no reply i sent them on this forum because i cannot get in to the o2 iphone unlocking forum and send them a pm there

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 257 ✭✭dougs09

Surely going into an 02 store and getting the request sent from there though is another option, tbh this is what I'm considering doing as this nonsence about having to be registered on the 02 forums doesn't need to be a factor in getting it unlocked, think of everyone who doesn't use the net that much, they can't get it unlocked for this reason??

I might even ring 02 and try get them to sort it from there end

one small problem with that i am in Australia so th only hope i have is through email and forums

tried ringing to they said they do not unlock iphones

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 257 ✭✭dougs09

Ah right, and will you have spent enough credit or that then to allow then to unlock it for ya?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4 dxxley

    i am on bill pay

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,784 ✭✭✭TBi

I sent a PM for an unlock request.

Hopefully i'd spent enough on credit before O2's customer service treated me like crap and i returned to Meteor.

Hi there, i currently have a company phone through work with O2.

I'm buying an iphone off boards, brand new.

The phone is locked to o2, will my sim card work in it?

If not what do i need to do, i've asked about an upgrade to my boss but he wont entertain it.

The top ups that were done on the account that is was registered with will have to count in this circumstance. You can send on the IMEI anyway and I will request it for you.

If it is locked to O2 and you are on O2 there is no issue.

I sent a request this day last week via a PM to Daryll and Paddy, but I got a text back from O2 saying that I was on Speakeasy and I need to top up with €150 to unlock the iPhone. But I am on Bill Pay for the last 11 years.

Hi there, today I requested my 8GB 3G iPhone to be unlocked on the Customer Care IVR thing. It just said they'd contact me back..... I would have preferred to speak to someone though :( I am geting constant missed calls because of coverage issues and I need to move network. It is an O2 Ireland handset, have definitely topped up by over 150 euro, I am registered on O2.ie so as far as I can tell I meet all the criteria.

Is it quicker for me to send a request through ye here or will they get back to me relatively promptly from my request over the automated service?

    Thanks!

    hi daryl
i have a o2 broadband package for the last 8 months. i have brought a iphone from adverts can you somehow interlink the 2 to get my phone unlocked? i planned on moving from meteor to o2 but i have been offered a job in nz starting next month and i would not use 150e credit before then

    thanks
    paul

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,635 ✭✭✭jenno86

    Hi,

Mine went through today. O2 will send a second text when they confirmation from Apple, telling you to hook it up to iTunes. I connected it to iTunes and updated it to 3.1.3 (was running it on 3.1.2 jailbroken so I use a Meteor sim) and after it was updated it came up on iTunes that my iPhone had been successfully unlocked! :D

Bring thank you to Talk2O2: Paddy, helped me out when problems arose!

Other phone companys should take note, GET FORUMS!

Think you need to put in a different sim, not an 02 one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,587 ✭✭✭✭guil

yeah either sync with a diff sim or else do a restore with the o2 sim

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 492 ✭✭kilsmum

Sent off my request for an unlock code for my husband but he got a text back from 02 saying they did not recognise the IMEI no. - he had problems with the speaker on his first phone and Apple replaced it - what is the story on a replaced phone? BTW he is now out of his 18 month contract since April 8th - Kilsmum
