I'm thinking of joining, can anyone who is a member let me know how busy it tends to be? Do you have to wait for machines or are they generally free enough?

Overall, I find the gym options here in Galway really disappointing. They all seem to close between 9 and 10 in the evening which I'm sure suits most people but doesn't suit me and the majority of them have all these hidden extras, for example, having to pay for classes on top of your membership price. I was told by kingfisher it's only 50 euro for six classes but still, it's only that price to do exercise classes privately anyway so where is the saving?

if you have the luxury if being able to go during the day your sorted, but from about 6 onwards the place does be jammers, but considering college is over soon you should have a summer of vacant machines :pac:

I wouldn't suggest it. I live near the city centre. I picked it because it had a pool and to me it looked nicer than NRG..I joined a couple of weeks before the students got back so maybe they made an effort to clean it up a little..anyway after a few weeks it didn't seem so special anymore.

The floors are always dirty, the equipment to me isn't all that impressive..I previously went to a gym in Castlebar 4 years ago which had much better stuff. I still haven't found a punching bag in there though admittedly I have gone very often! I've been stuck working pretty late and as you said it closes around 10. By the time I'm out of work and have eatin and let it digest theres no real time to get there and have a decent work out, I like to go for a swim afterward too so I look for 2 hours or so to go..especially since I have to try and find parking in Dun or Corrib Village.

Also theres not as many good looking lady students working out in there as you'd think. It's mostly metro looking Rugby or Rowing team guys! :P

There are no really good gyms in Galway. It's probably the best which is pretty sad

    Could've fooled me.

Anyways I think kingfisher is way overpriced if you're not a student. I'd check out what gyms some of the hotels have on offer first op.
eta: GCG is a 'really good gym'.

I was going consistently for about a month so maybe I didn't get a fair sample. But there seemed to be alot of rowing club and rugby club T-Shirts in there.

I didn't think it was too bad...The sticker price isn't great but they offer you lower if you ask. I got it pretty cheap

I found parking to be a general problem (if you go before 6.30 and don't have a student ID or staff ID, you have to pay a stupid hourly rate, and there really isnt that much parking nearby, unless you want to walk miles). Just one thing to consider...

Also found it to be quite dirty (at least the changing rooms), my opinion.

    The pool is nice though!

I would. Call it scenery or ambiance. It helps motivation. I'm sure ladyfolk appreciate having pretty things to look at while working out too.

Since when did checking someone out equate to the height of perversion?

That's quite ok with me. The men would be my eye candy, not the women.

It does get busy but they do have a lot of machines. It's generally fine if you don't want to do free weights.

If you do want to free weights, you've got to be a lot more particular with timing.

Though if you're mostly doing lighter weights they have a second set of 20 kg and under in the 'stretching' room.

Classes in NRGfitness are included in price including pilates

Yeah it bugs me you have to pay for most of the classes, in fact all of the good ones! Never had to pay extra for classes in Dublin gym I was in.

Hasn't really been a problem before now but has anyone noticed all the kids in and running around the last two weeks?! I like kids but this really does my head in -very uncomfortable when they're in the changing rooms unsupervised as well.
