    Hi there,

Can anyone suggest where I could get good protein bars cheaply? On the net or otherwise?

    Thanks.

To be honest, I don't recommend most protein bars. They tend to have low quality protein and be packed with either sugar or sugar alcohols. Plus they have a huge number of calories for the actual amount of food you are eating. Many of them run 230-350 calories a bar, and some are even higher.

Most of them taste like crap as well. Sticky and sickly sweet.

If you are really stuck, I find the that Atkins Morning Shine chocolate chip bars are not too disgusting. You'll get them in Boots. Not the actual Atkins protein bars which are sickeningly sweet. These ones come in boxes of 5, and have something like 12g of protein per 136 calorie bar. The last time I looked, they cost €7.50 for five.

I think Bodybuilding.com has a thing where you can order a box of different samples of protein bars, but watch the postage. If you are buying bars from the US, then check out iherb.com which has much cheaper postage.

    Thanks Eileen,

I'm looking to build some muscle mass as I'm injured at the moment and will have to stay away from CV excersizes for a while. I'm actually ok with their taste and the calorie count wouldn't bother me too much as I'm weight training at the moment and they're generally filling enough so that they are my last meal immediately after my evening workouts. They cost about €4 a pop though so I'm just looking for a cheaper alternative.

Good suggestion with bodybuilding.com. I'll be sure to check that out.

You'd be much better off with a protein shake.

Actually, I posted a DIY protein bar recipe a while back, which should be a lot cheaper than anything you'd buy.

You're a fountain of knowledge EileenG. As useless as I am in the kitchen I might still try some of those recipes detailed in the thread which you're suggested.

The best protein:calorie bar I've found (with the briefest of searches) is Boots' own brand called 'Body Build'. It's free from hydrogenated fats, artificial flavours and colours and it's €2.49. The nutritional info is as follows.

Typical Values per 100g (bar is 50g)

    Energy 315 kcal
    Protein 40g
    Carbs (sugars) 21g (17g)
    Fat (saturates) 7g (4.8g)
    Fibre 6g
    Sodium 0.3g
    Equivalent as Salt 0.7g

    The taste is ok.

If anyone finds a better bar out there please post the details.

**Edit - It's Chocolate and Strawberry flavoured**
