Use a DVD recorder if you have one.

    F1ngers, thats awesome :)

Most reviewers use a software called FRAPS.
This is there website. I am not sure if its a free software though

    http://www.fraps.com/

I am not sure but i think in uncharted 2, u could upload videos online via the "machinima " option in the main screen. Don really know if you can upload it to youtube though.

Considering the chap is posting this in Playstation, PC software isn't going to do much.

Please refrain from using shortened URL's. I realse you're being "poignant" here but there's a serious danger to using them to post bad, naughty things... plus it's useless on a forum where you're not limited to 140 characters.

As a real answer, you'll need a capture card to plug into a computer of some sort. They just re-direct the signal through a small graphics processor and pipe it into your PC to edit/record etc. through some software.

PC World and Peates etc. should have them. I think they run in cost from around €100 up.

There's a lot of information in that thread specific to recording on the ps3 with several different methods, check it out.

mod note: did you even bother reading my post (the one above yours?) about not posting shortened URLs? -projectmayhem

Right, probably the best person to answer this since I've tried and tested them all.

First, it depends on what you want quality wise and how much your willing to spend.

    Cheapest option is:
    Easycap €9.99 from ebay

    easycap-usb.jpg

It will record in SD (Standard Definition) and uses composite / svideo.
I use it to record everything, from my Nes, megadrive, xbox to VHS and converting old video camera movies for relatives

    next on the list is:
    Dazzle €70+ ebay

    pinnacle_dazzle_dvd_recorderz82standard.jpg

dazzle works in the same way as the easycap, but a lot of people hate them and the software leaves a lot to be desired. (I recommend the easycap for the same quality but a cheaper price)

And at the high end is:
Hauppauge HD PVR €200 (Official site - here in Ireland)

    haup_hd_pvr1.jpg
    5-30-08-hauppauge-hd-pvr.jpg

This is my baby, I love this thing.

It records through component so you can get HD (720p & 1080p) quality. the files are much larger in comparison to the cheaper capture cards, but the quality is amazing

Check out my youtube if you want to see the quality

    Lastly, you can go for:
BlackMagic Intensity Pro €200 Official site

    hero.jpg

This is the highest quality you can get as it inputs and outputs HDMI.
The only drawback with this is it has to be PC installed and unlike the others, can't be used on a laptop.
The quality is unquestionable though but again, what it has in quality it lacks in mobility

If anybody has any questions about buying, setting up or recording don't hesitate to drop me a PM :)

    Cheers

I have the Intensity and it's really good quality.
Main issue is HDCP in the HDMI signal from the PS3 - and yes, everything is encrypted :(

There are items to help here - just gotta know what to look for

Some new things coming from BlackMagic Design which look to be good.

The Intensity Shuttle for $200 from May
    hero-smokey.jpg
Basically the Intensity PCIe card made into an external box which is USB3.0 only. Same downsides - i.e. HDCP is a no-no, and no compression so you need to have a very good CPU and hard disk setup.

And then there's the H264 Pro Recorder for $350 from July
    hero-smokey.jpg
This appeals to me - same HDCP issue, but now that you have H264 encoding in the box, less CPU and Hard disk requirements.

Might consider the pro-recorder. HDMI to H264 is very appealing as right now 10mins at 720p is ~6GB of disk space.

Think i saw something in Aldi that lets you record your old VHS to PC or DVD. May be similar to that cheap one listed above by Tallon. Ill have a better look next time im in there but it might be a good starting point rather than forking out a lot for a top end recorder.

here is a very cost effective way works for HD if you have a HD/dvi port on your computer which i dont have but works the way shown

    What's free about it????
He has an analogue capture card in the back of the PC. Most PCs don't have it and would need to be added. They are cheap, but not free.

Also don't see how it works for HD as the AV output is limited to SD.
    Or have I missed something?

Movie maker just works on source video, and can capture from supported devices.
To capture video like this you must have a capture card in some form - either USB, PCI or PCIe.

its all confuseing for me been trying to record gameplay me self rang maplins and i think there just as confused as me im useing lap top so pci card is out
wanted a cheap way to record HD guess its going have to be the happauge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 604 ✭✭✭DemoniK

yep - no cheap way to record HD I'm afraid.

For the happauge just make sure you can view component (not composite) video source on your TV that you want to watch while playing. This is because the Happauge takes in component and passes it through - it can't convert it. If you don't have that capability on the TV you will need to ditch the HD recording and do SD.

You connect a component AV cable (has 5 RCA plugs) for the PS3 into the inputs of the hauppage box, and then a set of cables to the TV from the box.

You can hook up the digital input as well - but not sure if you can record more than just stereo - Tallon would know more.. If you go the hauppage route you should PM him for info on his set up...

Do they ship to Ireland from the US site?

Haven't seen this box before. Do you have a link to the article?
Am guessing that it's a media streamer box and not a PVR, i.e. you can stream out your media over LAN and then the audio/video connections are to allow you to connect up to TV or projector as needed.
    Could be wrong though....

Just because something has HDMI on it doesn't mean it's an input, and even then chances are it won't allow HDCP content to be recorded so you will either need to somehow remove the HDCP, or as Tallon mentioned, use component which will do HD and has no content protection.

    Just tried the US Store
And it seems you can order it
Just has a little note ;)

Note: Shipments to Ireland, UK, Belgium and the Netherlands will be shipped from our Ireland warehouse, and will be charged shipping costs plus 21% Irish VAT on goods and shipping.
So definitely a bit cheaper to go through the US store even with the VAT. - works out ~€190
