It would have been a lot more, about 16 years ago the cheapest cans going were usually royal dutch at £1 per can, so €1.27, there were some 6 for £5 deals on beers. So it is probably around half the price is was 16 years ago. It was rare to see a single can for under £1, and I never saw a bottle of the likes of heineken, bud etc for under £1.10.

Tennants was always an odd ball brand, priced too high to compete with the £1 cans, so it had a name of being cheap. I expect very few people have even tasted it, esp. those who say they would not touch it or say it is muck. I have heard crap like that many times over the years, people expressing disbelief or disgust that I or somebody else is drinking something, then when questioned sure enough they have never tasted it, in one case they were even unable to say what it was, i.e. a beer, they actually thought it was a cider, "or something".

I have drank Tennants, so I can can make the informed comment that it is indeed CHEAP PISS!

Then it should prove very popular, since all the best selling beers are mass produced piss, but are paying over the odds for it, at least this is cheap.

I've been faced with Tennants as the only option a couple of times. First time I had a few cans and gave the rest away, and the second time I went sober.

It might be OK if icy icy cold... But I wouldn't.

Sounds like most of you have never been to Scotland - in a lot of the bars/clubs there (and I mean everything from the sh*tholes to the classy joints) Tennents is the ONLY beer you can get! It's still wrank though!

Been to Scotland many times, and yeah, Tennents is pretty much omnipresent (on tap anyway).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,262 ✭✭✭✭Joey the lips

I find tennents hard to drink. I figure it would be easier to eat the can.

however I do buy the lidl perlenbacher.

    6 x 500ml bottles for 6.29

It tastes like a cross between bud and heinken.

Its not that bad and does not leave me with the same hangover as bud.

How does dishwater give you a hangover...?

TBH the offers around these days are nearly every week so no need to pay top € for drink anymore.

    MC

Thats just a difference of opinion. I dont think its dishwater other wise I would not drink it.

But on that note. I also see my local spar is doing english bud for 29 euro a tray. That works out a 1.40 a can which is good for bud.

If you like Ale, Lidl currently have Shepeard Neame's spring ale for €1.69 / bottle.
Lovely hoppy flavour, quite fruity with a tart after taste.

If you like your ales, you'll like this. If you're a lage drinker, you'll hate it as it tastes of something. :D

Bud is brewed using rice and potato waste (as well as grains), it is also brewed at high temperatures, all these factors mean it is far more prone to have congeners

I don't think perlenbacher tastes anything like bud. I was at a seminar/class on beverage tasting and bud was used as an example of a beer specifically brewed to be devoid of taste, the guy holding it was a professional beer and coffee taster, the beer he used as a good example of brewing technique & flavour was budvar and a few others.

Thats the strangeist thing i have ever heard... By that rational you drink because your told its brewed correctly not because you like the taste.

    Which bit?

Dunno how you came up with that logic, I never said anything of the sort. I made no comment on which I prefer or choose to drink.

True, Peroni seems to be gaining ground though and was available most places in edinburgh. As bad as it can be here for beers, it's not nearly as bad as Scotland!

Where would the likes of wiessbiers fit in among all this? Given that they are very cloudy beers, are they full of yeast etc?

Franziskaner is a decent weiss beer. Under €2 a bottle in Lidl.

The cloudy beers wouldn't be filtered, so that's why they have yeast left - and probably more taste.

Staropramen is 1.98 a bottle in Lidl. I got 5 for 9.30 today! Lovely stuff.

I tried some of this and its nice , good value at the price.I am sure it tastes the exact same as the weiss beer on sale in aldi, just in a different bottle.
Decent prices in either Aldi or Lidl for the weisbeer.

Where can you store a 15/20 boxes of these, was thinking the Shed or the Attic but both would get fairly to very warm during the day - ie. does Beer spoil if its not kept in a reasonably cool place?
