Loads of cameras around and film crews. Girlfriend asked one of the camera men what was going on and he said he couldn't tell her. Like it was a secret or something. Anyone any clue.

Were they dancing in the moonlight ???

It was a Flash Mob. Was walking down the street, heard the music, went over to see what was going on, and suddenly other "onlookers" started dancing around. Had to retreat quickly. It went on for about 5 mins. and then, they were gone. Very surreal.

Teehee! Some of you would have copped it as we invited boardsies to join us on a thread on the Galway forum
    ;
As part of the Arts Festival they organised a few rehearsals in the black box over the past few weeks and only told us today what time it would be on!

Went really well, altho we were all really squished as Shop Street was packed anyway...I got someone to film it so I'll post it later, but there were cameras everywhere and photographers..

    A really fun two minutes!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭dilallio

I got some of it on my phone - missed the start cos I was trying to retreat when everyone around me started dancing :o

LadyPennyworth - can you see yourself in this?

I'm behind the guy with the baseball cap and beard! But can see another boardsie so I'll alert him to your video!

There were cameras in Lynches and on top of McCambridges so looking forward to that footage.

Looks like loads of fun! Who organized it? How dose one get involved, if there is to be another one that is!

It was the St Patrick's Festival crew, as the St Patrick's Day festivities kicked off today... not sure there'll be another one for a long time, although it would be great!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,398 ✭✭✭inisboffin

looked great craic! Sorry I had to miss it.
There's more stuff on the streets on Mon eve too, bit of street stuff from the Macnas young folk I believe.
Just get together with your friends and plan a flashmob of your own! It can be as simple or elaborate as you choose. :)

There's a legend of a chap in a red jacket in my video, hadn't a clue but got stuck in the middle and joined in; except for the freeze part: he did a little wobble and scooted out! That's what made it fun!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,085 ✭✭✭Xiney

    absolutely lol

can't wait for the pro video - going up on fb!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,973 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

That's unreal! Fair play to everybody involved, this is what I love about Galway.

A massive one for the Volvo Ocean Race would be cool. Loads of time to practice! :D

Yeah, I agree. I don't know why they didn't do it where the three streets meet outside Evergreen/Kings Head
Would have been much better. I don't know why.

Some pics up on my facebook, small as i had to crop, but see if ye find yourself: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=396572&id=502670580&ref=mf

This was brilliant! Well done to everyone involved! I'm only sorry i wasn't there to see it!

Can I ask what gave you guys the idea to to it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,398 ✭✭✭inisboffin

It was the Patricks Fest gang, and a lot of those folks are theatrey/dance types. They'd do a lot of theatre events too.
Flashmobs have grown in popularity over the last few years. A cross between Street Theatre and Performance Art and Improv. I think it's a brilliant thing to do just for the sake of it!
Sometimes flashmobs are people frozen, people all singing the same song (there was a deadly sing-song one in Grafton St last year!)

I didn't do this one so not sure of the specifics of the song chosen etc.

Ahh right thanks for the explanation.. I saw the one with The Black Eyed Peas and Oprah on youtube which was brilliant also! It's a great idea - looking forward to the Patricks Day Fest now!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,096 ✭✭✭LadyMayBelle

I *think* they chose that song because its the theme of the St Patrick's festivities this year; the party in the black box next saturday is called 'Dancing in the Moonlight', maybe 'Moon' or 'moonlight' is the theme...

    Through boards. :)
Someone posted it on the 'Meeting new friends in Galway' thread. An email had gone around to dance schools etc, but there was also a facebook for it.. there were four boardsies as far as I know who took up the offer, me, TenLeftFingers, Wolverine and Galwaybabe... maybe there are more we just don't know!

Just saw an amazing video of the flashmob on YouTube, I'd say it was the official one, with multiple angles etc! I was about to create a link to it but it was removed. I'd say they'll put it up again soon, saw a comment from the uploader (not the toploader, haha) saying their name was spelt wrong in the video text, so maybe that's why it was removed, probably wanted to re-edit it and then re-upload, hopefully soon!!

There's tonnes, so I'll post three and sure if you want I can email them
