I don't know if it's an age thing, but I find myself becoming more and more obsessed with good food lately. Like, Pat the Baker or Brennan's Bread is a no-no for me now and I always try to buy from local bakeries (the one's that are still in existence). There's nothing like a good loaf of bread. The same can be said for fish, with the likes of Donegal Catch - only buy fresh fish from Ballycotton Seafoods now. It's the same with poultry - nothing worse than cheap chicken or eggs from locked-up chicks. And all that South American crappy meat (that's claimed to be 'Irish', because it's processed here) you'd buy in Tesco. There's nothing like the local butchers.

I remember when I was young when sausages tasted like sausages, and a loaf of fresh bread was actually fresh with no preservatives and wasn't all doughy. And chickens weren't injected with water and proteins.

Good food is still out there but harder to find, and a lot, lot more expensive. If only we could afford to buy it all the time. Shame really, the way things have gone!

I try to eat well now, even bought a smoothie maker
And the aul boy fair play to him is gone all philosophical and self sufficient in his old age so I'm eating eggs fresh from the hens vag even though I never liked them before

But its easy to do these things whilst 'between jobs'

I can't really say that I eat that well.
I'm currently a poor student, so I don't really have the financial clout to shop anywhere other than Lidl or Aldi.

Mostly Raw foods like Sashimi, Raw Goats Cheeses, Raw Nuts, Carpaccio, Tons of Salads, very very little grains.

Mostly get my carbs from lots of fruits and vegetables.

    Love smoothies.

If I am eating cooked food, love Green Thai Curries, Steps Of Rome Pizza (very rarely though and only one slice :() and Bobo's Burger's be the best burgers in Dublin

    See, now you need food.

I eat quite well I reckon, I love veg and chicken.
Toasted cheese and onion sambos are yum, as is french toast.

And sometimes just buttered toast will do.

Perfect example is eggs actually, nothing like true free-range..

I can go a few days without food too, I've no interest in it if I've been hitting the sauce a bit. But I wouldn't go on a mad one when I'm able to again, or it would be a puke fest. Start back small with an apple / yoghurt / soup. So, no I don't eat well. Im still pissed by the way

Generally I'm a healthy eater - yeah, like the OP it's probably an age thing. Want to retain the youthful looks and such. I have terrible wheat/yeast tolerance too so I only eat a minimal amount of bread and pasta (always brown) but I treat myself too. I'll try and have a boiled egg, brown bread, banana for brekkie, but if I get a severe craving for a scone, I'll have that scone.

I try to eat as healthily as possible (stemming from a skin condition I used to get in my twenties) and eat out of health shops most of the time eating nuts, grains, fruits etc.
I aslo avoid denaturated food as much as possible, no white flour, white sugar etc. but I'm on the road a lot and this isn't always practical.
I'll eat the odd bit of fish and I only eat meat when I'm training for a fight.

What's the nonesense about free-range chickens and eggs?

When you crack open a free range egg, you're never going to know whether it's going to look like a bad period inside!

I'm all for irradiation and cages. And scones.

Mainly healthy veggie fare (my wife is one) for main meals and healthy lunches but still interspersed with occasional frenzies of crisps and fast-food.

I also have a bad coffee and soft drink habit.

People who are really obsessed about food kind of freak me out to be completely honest. And I can't stand fussy eaters.

I eat what I think tastes nice. Life is short and I can't justify denying myself the small pleasures. If what tastes nice happens to be horrible for me, so be it. If it happens to be good for me, all the better.

In fairness I just eat what's available-- I'm also not a very fussy eater, I'll eat literally anything that's put in front of me (I have a thing about being rude, if someone goes to the effort to make and serve me food I'll eat it regardless of what I think about it).

Overall I eat a lot of potatoes and pasta, 'cuz they're cheap, quick, versatile and always in the house. Which probably isn't healthy, but fück it. If I had the money I'd consume a lot more veg and fruit.. and meat. I love meat.

Can't they be the same thing, really? I mean, I only eat what I think tastes nice, but I'm a fussy eater.

I eat really badly.. I live off protein - mainly Chicken (Southern Fried, Cajun, Curries, Roast, Lemon+Herb etc.), some beef, lamb every now and then.

Don't eat vegetables, fruit.. erm, eat apples and white grapes every now and then.

I live off Junk food, I really need to get healthy but healthy food's just not nice! :(

Your tastes change as you get older..I wouldn't touch a vegetable at 18 ewwwwww, now they are all I eat and I frickin' love them. Took soooooooo long for me to not be a fussy eater, although i still am a bit. It's not that healthy food is bad mostly...it's that people can't cook it well.

Well I'm sure I'll get there eventually :pac:

I used to live off fried chicken.. if I wanted some chicken, I'd fry it in butter. Now, if I'm cooking at home, I'll always grill it.. it's much healthier, and I prefer it being less greasy.

So I'll get healthy.. one step at a time :pac:

I qualified that a bit later in my post; I won't turn down food that people serve me, even if I'm not mad about it.. and I think most things taste nice, because I'm not fussy at all. There's really very little (closer to nothing) I won't eat/actively dislike.

By fussy eaters I mean the type who'll turn down basically everything, take forever to find something in a restaurant, refuse to eat this or that, make a big deal out of what they do/don't eat and just make everyone else around them want to explode.

Yeah lifes too short to eat bad food, when I could I would buy my veg fresh at the markets in galway at the weekend, along with things like sundried tomatos and buy a loaf of bread from griffins bakery, or cake from Goyas. But now im a poor student again so id say im mid ground Iv never been one for the healthy food binges and salad is just gross.
I like veg, like meat, pastas, personally some brown bread tastes sooooooo much better than white so id go for that anyway. Yeah theres loads of stuff i eat now that I wouldnt have eaten two years ago so yeah i think it is an age thing, my biggest weakness is however thai food.

    +1
Drinking completely messes up my eating patterns. I've often gone a whole hang-over day where I just eat a cheese sandwich.

I'm trying to focus on eating more as opposed to eating 'healthy' these days. I have a really bad appetite.
Beans on toast is my new found 'p1ss easy meal to make'. I still live at home with the mammy and daddy so whatever dinner they throw my way does the job.

I eat flawlessly. Never eat sweets, chocolate, fizzy drinks, salt, sugar, etc. All lean proteins, low gi carbs and essential fats. Eat about 1-1.5kg of veg a day and 5 pieces of fruit to keep my body's alkalinity in check. Only downside is the alcohol and the heroin.

That's much the same as myself. I do enjoy fast-food occasionally but prefer the local chippers to the likes of McDonalds etc.. I also drink too much coffee, smoke too much and probably drink too much. I'm not really a healthy person at all, and don't exercise or anything. Though I really should.

But I love the taste of good food, more than it being a health conscious thing.

I'm not a fussy eater at all and I eat most types of food. It's more the quality of the food that I was talking about. If I could afford to eat all organic, then I would. Like a good loaf of properly made bread is a lot more expensive these days. When I was young there were two local bakeries in my village that made the best bread and it wasn't expensive at all. The big bakeries wiped most of them out with their mass produced crap.

Chicken is another example. A good free-range these days is expensive.

I'm the same with veg, love them now. Cauliflower, carrots, peas ..everything except for brussel sprouts. Love bacon and cabbage too. Potato and leek soup, yum..

I eat pure crap. I've kinda given up cooking-bar making the odd chicken curry or casserole- so most things i eat are frozen or processed, bar pasta. I very rarely eat veg, only thing i really would buy for myself would be carrots, i'd have the odd bit of fruit, usually apples.
I think that since i started living by myself, my diet has gotten a lot worse. I used to put a bit of effort into it but i've gotten into a bad habit.

Yeh I get what you mean Ollie. I don't eat well exactly but the food I buy is good food, does that even make sense?

Like I only buy corn fed eggs free range, I like eggs and they are just so much nicer. I buy good pasta and good bread when I'm eating them. I buy decent cooked meats rather than the old picnic ham I would have bought when I first moved out of home! Hicks or superquinn saussies. I only buy lean mince and free range chicken fillets from the butchers. Striploin steak instead of round :pac:

I love the farmers markets, there's a great one in Dun Laoghaire every Sunday.

    I'm hungry now!

I do most of our shopping in Lidl & Aldi and we eat very well - stock up on whatever the "super Sunday" offers are and make yummy vegetable stuff for the week, works out dead cheap, is healthy, and costs very little really :D

We eat as healthily as possible, masses of veg, pulses, rice etc. and mainly have chicken (free range) for meat. Wheat is a no-no in our house, so pasta is either spelt, rice or corn and bread is deliciously fresh spelt from local bakery. Very lucky in that bakery also has an awesome selection of health foods, so I am always in there rummaging around for new things - latest discovery is wheat & sugar free museli which is perfect for midnight snacks.

Of course, I fall completely off my healthy eathing after a night on the town and the only thing I will consider eating when I get in is cheese on toast & tea, lots of it!!

I eat as well as I can with the little money I have. I have various health conditions meaning I really cannot eat crap, but I also can't afford to shop in health food stores all the time. I eat a lot of Greek salads, lentil curries with brown rice, roast chicken dinner, stir fries, etc. I do also eat pizza and pasta once or twice a week, but I feel crappy afterwards. Trying to cut down on the wheat and eat more fruit and veg.

    Salads - Lettuce & Onion
    Fruits - Tomato & Ketchup
    Dairy - Cheese

I usually only have 1 proper cooked meal per week, that's usually a roast dinner on Sunday. The rest of the time it's either a roll from a deli or fast food, which makes me feel crap. The only thing I eat which is somewhat healthy is porridge every morning.Usually about 10 cups of coffee a day too :o

Ever heard of diabetes? Or any number of health issues that mean you can't eat what you want? It isn't about getting fat. All the exercise in the world won't change the fact that eating junk is really bad for you. Anyone who thinks a diet of burgers and chips isn't impacting their general health is living in cloud cuckoo land. Those 'my body is a temple' types are a bit annoying but they're generally right. Food is fuel for your body, how is it supposed to run properly if you fill it with crap? I notice a tremendous difference in how I feel depending on if I've had a salad or stew for lunch compared to chipper food.

I just like high quality food where possible. I don't eat like a rabbit, but I don't see the point in eating rubbish food (except for hungover kebabs or Burger King once in a while). I'd rather have a really good, homemade burger with fresh salad and homemade wedges than a McDonald's meal. A simple homemade pasta dish with chopped tomatoes and parmesan is healthier and cheaper than one of those awful Bachelor's packets you add water to. I ate quite badly as a teenager when I couldn't cook and I shudder to think of some of the rubbish I used to eat. My sister still eats like that and I hate seeing her eat Super Noodles and ready meals every day. No wonder she's always tired and run down. There's just no reason to live off junk food, imo.

    [/boring]

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!"

    AND.....

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.

    1. The Japanese eat very little fat
and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

    2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat
and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

    3. The Chinese drink very little red wine
and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

    4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine
and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

    5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats
and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

    CONCLUSION:

Eat and drink what you like.
Speaking English is apparently what kills you
