ok overall but need a LOT more vegetables. no cereal bars or weight watchers bread (or any weight watchers stuff, use fresh food instead).

    Obviously portions sizes matter too.

    do you exercise?

    Few comments:

There's a lot of packet food in your diet, there are loads of quick meals you can make that don't take much more effort than convenience food. Homemade soup can be made in bulk and then frozen in individual portions for example. Or pop a salmon fillet on top of some greens in the microwave and eat with some baby potatoes drizzled with a little virgin olive oil.

It's good to have some protein at the start of the day to fill you up, add a boiled egg or two to breakfast and you'll be less likely to make bad choices later on in the day.

And you're right, coleslaw is really bad. A nice alternative is some baby spinach leaves dressed in olive oil, a little white wine vinegar and a little whole grain mustard.

I go walking 4/5 nights a week, I only ate the WW and M&S stuff because I was in an aunts house.

What's with the rolleyes? You asked for opinions on your diet and he was trying to help you..

I would agree that you need to add alot more fresh vegetables to your diet and maybe more fibre. Try adding some nuts and seeds on top of porridge for a healthy breakfast that will keep you full till lunch.
Make sure to drink plenty of water too.

To be honest I would think you're under-eating. I'm feeling hungry at teh thoughts of only eating that much! I would eat more fish and protein too...

If I were to eat any more fish i'd grow fins, fish is one of my favourite foods. I agree with what you're saying about not eating much, when I was slimmer I ate more so i'm thinkin my metabolism needs a kick up the backside.

    Hi guys,

I've taken on board all the good advice i've been given here, but i'm banging my head off the wall. I was with my dietician this morning she weighed me and I have gained yet more weight although i've been exercising and really stringent on my diet. She reckons its down to the tablets i'm on. Is there anyone else who's been in this situation and managed to get their weight down. A guy asked me was I expecting the other day :(

Have you ever heard of the Valu Activ machine, I was considering trying it.

post up a typical days diet as it stands now, and details what exercise you have done over the past week ... there is probably a simple explanation tbh.

    B: Muesli
    L: Ryvita, Tuna/Salad
    D:Fresh fish,salad, 3 small salad potatoes
    Snacks: handful mixed nuts, fruit

    B: Turkey Rasher Sandwich/Granary Bread
    L: Tuna salad
    D:Pasta/chicken
    Snacks: Activia yoghurt/nuts

These are just rough examples, my dietician couldn't fault my diet to be honest she thought I was eating fine, I have gone walking 3 times over the last week 1hr and a half approx. I am gonna change this to 45 mins 5/6 nights a week to boost my Resting Metabolic Rate ;). I really can't understand why I keep gaining weight, I have cut fizzy drinks out completely have started drinking peppermint tea. I know my own body and if I thought I wasn't putting the effort in I wouldn't be posting here wasting peoples time but under normal circumstances if I wasn't on tabs I would have lost a ton of weight by now.

ok, my comments are 1. go with 45 minutes exercise 6 times a week .. do 30 minutes brisk walking or something that makes you break a sweat. and do 15 minutes body weight exercises .. push yourself for 45 minutes because its a smallsarcrifice out of a 24 hour day. 2. diet looks ok, but some stuff is a it vague .. salad could = few lettuce leaves and tomato or 1000cals of coleslaw and dressing type salad .. IMO your diet is good but you need to reduce portions .. your muesli could be 300 cals or closer to 1000cals depending on portion size..

Salad normally would be lettuce, tomato, cucumber, red onion, peppers, and a small bit of low fat vinagerette dressing.

Yeah i'll have to try the portion thing though I really don't eat that much as it is.

OP perhaps looking at your diet, I'd wonder what kind of muesli do you eat? Do you make it up yourself or is it off the supermarket shelf?

Would you consider switching to a protein breakfast even for 4 out of 7 days?

There are lots of posters here who advocate having eggs for breakfast and I've just started doing it myself and I agree. Two eggs will fill you up until lunch time. Have an egg with your turkey rashers instead of bread. On your non protein days have some natural yoghurt with berries.

Lunch looks ok to me. Do you put mayo in your tuna and if so a little or a lot?

For dinner try to stay away from carbs as much as possible and concentrate on fish/meat and veg.

I just found out today that yoghurts really aren't a great snack food :( but nuts are good.

It's probably not going to be one thing that works for you but a combination of factors. I also agree that some sort of weights programme is a good idea to compliment your walking.

Thanks How Strange, I do have eggs at the weekend, but sometimes I start work at 7 so it's just not an option I wouldn't be able to eat breakfast at 5.30 in the morning thats why muesli is handy though i'm going to try some other cereal. I thought Activia yoghurts are good for you my dietician said they're fine.

What kind of muesli do you eat? If you buy it from the supermarket the chances are it is high in salt and sugar so even though you think you're being good and healthy you're actually not.
Go to your local health food store and buy a mix of flakes (wheat, buckwheat, spelt, rye, oats) some nuts and seeds and mix them all up. I used to put spelt puffs in mine for a little more bite. You can roast it and make granola. Then have it with natural yoghurt and some fruit or berries.

IMO those activa yoghurts are terrible. There's loads of additives in them and they are so sweet that you know they're packed with hidden nasties.

Scrambled eggs only take a couple of minutes. Or you could boil eggs while you're getting ready. Do you like porridge? You could soak it overnight and heat it quickly in the morning. Or there's always oat pancakes - you can make them in advance and heat them in the toaster.

Yoghurts aren't the worst, but if you're trying to be extra good be careful with them, because a lot of them are loaded with sugar and unnecessary additives. I think Glenisk yoghurts are better than most. But natural yoghurt with berries can be really nice - I mash them up into the yoghurt with a fork. You can blend them in either.

If the dietician says it is the tablets then that is the explanation but I would ask for an opinion from the prescribing physician. Can you do any research yourself on whether unexplained weight gain is a known side effect of your medication (or of your medical condition) and if there are any alternatives you could be prescribed? There should be some information on the packaging.

How much weight have you actually gained and did it only start happening when you were put on this particular medication? As someone else said earlier the amount you are eating doesn't look a lot.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,885 ✭✭✭Getwellsoon

You really should look into if it's the medication and if so, then ask to be put on something else if at all possible.

In my opinion it looks like you are undereating, maybe it is possible that your body thinks it is starving so it's hanging onto any fat that it does have for dear life?!

If I were you I'd swap the pasta (which you appear to have quite often) for a heap of steamed fresh vegetables. I would also have porridge with berries for breakfast and not a sugary muesli or fruit salad. And then maybe a large salad with some protein for lunch, or soup? Try to cut down on bread as well.

Thanks dxhound, yes to both the medication/condition causing weight gain. However before I started the meds I could easily keep my weight down to 8 1/2 stone with little effort. If I was really naughty and not paying attention to my diet the heaviest I would be would be 9 3. I am now 10 3, so i've gained the guts of 2 stone and cannot shift even 1 pound. My dietician said i'm eating plenty you honestly wouldn't know what to believe would you? I've done all the googling and research always read my prescription leaflet etc, I've been on numerous different tabs over the last 2 1/2 years and the first ones I took made me pile on the weight i'm off that 11 months now though, these made your liver stop burning fat properly which my doc kindly told me after I piled it on.

K guys before you go jumping on the diet and exercise no quick fix band wagon I have never done a yoyo crash diet in my life. I have never been one for slimming potions and tablets, bcoz most of them are BS. BUT I am at my wits ends, I was considering taking the Botanical Slimming Gel for a couple of weeks and just wondering if anyone had any experience with it. I feel really deflated that i've come to this but i'm banging my head of a wall.
