New ITV1 HD channel available on Freesat, Freeview, Sky and Virgin

ITV launches its new channel, ITV1 HD, on April 2nd 2010, which will broadcast ITV1’s schedule in high definition for the first time.

ITV this week reached commercial agreement with Sky and Virgin Media for carriage of the new channel. ITV1 HD will also launch on Freeview*; and Freesat, where it will move from a red button service to a standalone channel for the first time. The new deals mean that ITV1 HD will be available on all major high definition platforms ahead of this summer’s World Cup.

The ITV1 schedule will be simulcast on the new channel, with the majority of peak time content available in ‘native’ HD, including all live football, and an increasing range of drama, factual and entertainment programming. Other ITV1 content including GMTV and the daytime schedule, will be ‘upscaled’ – giving viewers a better than ever experience of the nation’s most popular commercial channel.

Upcoming highlights on ITV1 HD will include the final stages of the UEFA Champions League and The FA Cup as well as England internationals and the FIFA World Cup 2010. HD dramas include Father & Son, Law and Order: UK, Identity, The Prisoner, Foyles War and Lewis. In factual programming there’s the chance to see Joanna Lumley’s Nile, Greatest Cities of the World with Griff Rhys Jones, and the brand new Survival with Ray Mears all in pure HD. And, for HD entertainment there’s The Whole 19 Yards, 71 Degrees North, Soccer Aid and the UK’s biggest TV show, Britain’s Got Talent. ITV1’s Prime Ministerial debate will also be shown in HD.

Peter Fincham, ITV Director of Television, Channels and Online, said: “The availability of high definition content is something viewers have come to expect as standard and, as we approach the 2010 World Cup, I’m delighted that we are able to launch our new channel, ITV1 HD, on all major platforms.

“All of our output will benefit from the stunning picture quality that high definition offers, whether it’s ITV’s original drama, landmark factual shows, entertainment events or our live football.”

O.T./ Interesting. I wonder if UPC have done a carriage deal for this like they have for ITV2, 3 and 4.

Im going to cancel my Sky subscription.

Its bad enough that we pay far more for our Sky Service and HD service, and yet we now get far lesser HD channels.

    the UK get Ch4 HD
    BBC HD
    and now ITVHD.

No doubt they will also get Five HD later on in the year.

There is no reason why we cant have access to BBC HD and Ch4 HD considering we already pay for the BBC service on Sky and already receive Ch4.

I know its not Sky`s fault and its carriage deals blah blah blah, but at the end of the day Sky are still happy to take more money of us than they do the Brits and its this reason im going to take out a UK hd package and use a different address for my subscription and at least get away with more HD and cheaper prices thanks to the exchange rate.

On the plus side, it will be on a transponder where it will be using a Sky box compatible symbol rate so it can be tuned in via Other Channels, so you can still tune it in and access it that way, just not record. It's on Freesat so will be FTA. Non-Sky FTA boxes can also tune it in, as I'm sure Freesat/Sat4Free boxes can too. Testing should start imminently as it launches in a fortnight.

You do know how much Irish customers are being ripped off?

The complete SKY HD package in the UK costs €64.42 and that is in Euro.

    That Includes HD subscription
All Channels including Movies and Sports
    BBC HD
    ITV HD
    CH4 HD
    BBC 3
    BBC 4
    ITV 1
    ITV2
    ITV3
    ITV4
    Fiver
    Five
    Five USA

And what do we lose? RTE 1&2 TV3 and TG4 which we all get anyhow and will be free when RTE set up freeview.

And you actually save money if you suscribe to a UK account! Its a no Brainer, and its a joke on how much we are being ripped off.

It's not even getting great slots as is.
ITV1 HD will be available on the following EPG numbers:

    Freesat 119
    Freeview 51
    Sky 178
    Virgin 113

In fact on Freesat, its right beside BBC HD which is on 118, which is perfect

    BBC HD is 108.

    118 is ITV4+1

For advertising reasons that wont happen.

Excellent News , hopefully there will be some extra new Hi-Def content to go along with this and not just upscaled from the same SD source running on ITV.

Edit :- With this change does anybody know if ITV-HD on Free-Sat still remain running on DVB-S single as opposed to DVB-S2 ?

Upscaled would be just like HD when compared to their SD output.

I have just read over on DS that it will be England and Wales only. Northern Ireland and Scotland will miss out due to them not being served by ITV1

Don't worry, it's going on 10.832 H which has a symbol rate of 22000 so a Sky+HD box can tune it in if you're in Scotland or NI / ROI. It will remain DVB-S, and won't be in DVB-S2. You can watch, just not record on a Sky+HD box. It will also be FTA, so no worries about subscriptions or the like. Non-Sky boxes can get it easily too. :)

A pain for those wishing to record it with their Sky HD boxes.

ah so people with skyHD in ROI will be able to tune in this new constant service ITV1-HD via other channels?

If UPC get ITVHD on their EPG then I will gladly get rid of rip off Sky and move to them.

I really dont get this, on a Sky HD account here you get BBC HD and the ITV HD test channel right now, the ITV HD Channel will be available from launch here too as confirmed in this thread. With both a Sky + and a Sky HD box you get BBC 3 & 4, and ITV 1 through 4, and Five.

And both here and in the UK you need to subscribe to the Movie Channels and the Sports channels and pay the HD charge to get the HD versions of those channels. I really dont see what the anger is here for, CH4 Hd would be nice, but its by no means essential.

    .

The point is unlike the UK, they aren't officially on the EPG, so you can't record from those channels.

That makes Sky Ireland much less value for money then in the UK.

But the costs are made clear as is what you get and dont get before you sign up, I dont understand people cancelling in outrage as outlined above. If anything the new HD channels over the past few months make it better value not worse. If you really wanted the BBC and UTV on the epg you should have signed with UPC not Sky, the options are there.

I'm far more annoyed that there is no RTE HD channel than anything SKY have or havent done or charged me over the past year

It may be better value than it was before but compared to the UK it's very poor. In the first place it cost about 50% extra to have the full HD package here and secondly, while you can tune in the extra channels, you can't record them. Realistically Sky should be charging us the same as the UK, or less, but they use the excuse of "exchange rates" yet still seem to base their charges on the exchange rate of 18 months ago so we end up paying far more for less.

I agree. Read the T&C's and then decide if you want the service. Sky can't force channels to appear on their platform if they don't want to: e.g. BBC HD, ITV 1HD, C4HD, ITV 1-4 etc.

Channels pay Sky for EPG slots, so Sky would welcome any extra income. The one exception is on channels 141-2 on the Irish EPG, where Sky pay the BBC (actually BBC Worldwide) to appear.

RTE don't pay for EPG carriage, but Sky charge customers for a PSB channel which would ordinarily be free - as is BBC / ITV C4 / Five.
    That annoys me more, personally.

No, but if it becomes a competitive disadvantage, then Sky can offer them free carriage or even pay for them.

A recent survey by Sky sounds like they maybe forced to do this due to competition from UPC.

No idea, just heard of the survey from Sky customers who were asked the questions soon after UPC introduced the new channels.

UPC is looking increasingly competitive with their nice new HD box, new channels and in particular their very attractive triple play products and pricing.

Competition is always a good thing - real competition. Let's hope something comes of it. Extra channels free and a broadband tie-up.

Channel "10000" has shown up on 10.832 H. No video or sound testing yet, but this is probably ITV 1 HD. It's not flagged as HD on my Humax HDCI-2000 yet, but it may well be soon...

I wonder what the story will be with encryption for ITV1 HD, be nice to be able to record stuff and stick on to USb or whatever on the Humax.

There will be no encryption as it has to be on Freesat which has no CA functionality. It is the STB's local recording file format that restricts open transfer to USB and computers. Most non freesat recording devices will be able to record in native MPEG Transport Stream format which is readable in VLC and many freeware players.

Sorry, meant copy protection. At the moment all the ITV HD stuff is currently content is flagged with copy never codes, unlike the BBC HD stuff which can be to be copied once.

Once the channels is up and running as a full FTA HD channel, you should be able to by-pass the copy protection in the PVR by going into non-freesat mode.
