Wish the hurling was on second, don't see myself hanging around for the football....

Hurling should be good, could go either way...

The football has traditionally been on after the hurling, but this is one time where they could have changed that. With all due respect to St.Galls and Kilmurry/Ibrickane the hurling this year is the game everyone wants to see. Most of the hurling crowd won't stay for the football which could make for a drab enough atmosphere.

Though it's good to see a Clare v Antrim final, a bit of novelty in that. St.Galls have all the experience and will rightly start favourites. But K/I have shown themselves to be very hard to beat. This will probably be a tough low-scoring encounter and will be alot closer than the bookies think (they go St.Galls 1/3 KI 3/1 ) I think St.Galls might sneak it by about 2 pts.

I can see Portumna winning the hurling again. They haven't been at their best of late but I'd expect them to be much sharper for this. Against Dunloy they never got out of second gear, but didn't really need to. It has the makings of a cracking final, between undoubtedly the two best teams in the country. And in Portumna's case, probably the best ever if they can win this one.

Dont mind your Dunquibs and Masterminded and all that. Portumna -2pts @ 10/11 really is like finding monet in the street, fill yer boots!!

Adrian24326, the Hurling may well be the better match - though it might disappoint - but why buy a ticket if you only intend to stay for half the show? Even if the second half of the show isn't as good, it could still be good in its own right. I'll be there for both games, and I won't leave until after the final whistle of the day has been blown.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 16,195 Mod ✭✭✭✭adrian522

For me anyway, I see them as 2 different sports and if they were on seperate days I'd go to the hurling and not to the football.

The ticket only cost me €5, so I'm not concerned about the value as such but I'm just not as interested in football generally as I am in Hurling, but thats just a personal preference.

I think they alternate year on year which is first and which is second but I think they could make a judgement call based on which is the more attractive fixture.

Personally I'd be happy enough for the hurling to be switched to Thurles and be paired with the Inter provincial hurling final, as I feel that competition is sadly neglected.

Having said all that If the day is a good one I'll probably hang about for a bit of the football and see if tis a good game. I fear it will seem like a bit of an anti climax though but you never know.

I would say its far from a forgone conclusion that Portumna will win on Wednesday, it will be close. If Shamrocks can get decent ball into the full forward line they could do some damage.

The Shamrocks could win the midfield battle which will be crucial.

Obviously Canning and D. hayes will be a threat but Ballyhale are in a much better place now than they were this time last year.

    Game on...

I agree with Adrian on this, I remember a few years ago, they had the u-21 hurling on between Tipp and KK and hte Camogie on after between Tipp and Cork was on after, a large section left after the hurling, alot of those that stayed headed to the bar and those whio remained in there seats, myself included spent the entire Camogie match talking about the excellent Hurling that had just finished, it just makes more sense to have the more attractive/bigger crowd pulling game on second.

Both teams have very good, almost intercounty level sets of forwards, but imo the Ballyhale backs are much weaker than their counterparts and are there for the taking.

I take your point about midfield and the fact that Ballyhale have cha there but I dont think this will compensate fotr their frailtes at the back.

Do you mean it's like finding money in the street in the sense that you can't actually predict it?:p

Portumna might be favourites but I'd expect Ballyhale to give them a good rattle.

On the football, would agree about the bookies price not looking correct.
While I would have St Galls favourites, I wouldn't have then 1/3 on.

Not really, 2 points is nothing in hurling. You'd be as well off backing them straight.

2 great games in prospect on Wednesday. The hurling could be a classic and i expect Portumna to edge Ballyhale by a point or 2. The football is an interesting clash with the bookies making St Galls hot favourites but with the strong defence Kilmurry-Ibrickane have i could see them making history and becoming the 1st team from Clare to win an All Ireland club football title.

:DDont ya always feed the cows the bad bales first :D hurling should always be second like, makes more sense
But ii hope kilmurray win, even though they beat us in the munster quarter, they are from munster, all be it may not from cork haha they play deadly football doh, quick and lovely passing :D
It has to be portumna like has to be :D

I am really looking forward to the hurling - Galway V KK. I am expecting a tough uncompromising match with the likelihood of a red card or two being shown - which could tilt the result either way. Both teams have super forwards but I think the Ballyhale defence is a bit stronger. I think the KK men will win by 3 or 4 pts. I hope the men from the west win though as there are already too many trophies in KK land.
The football I feel will be a boring enough game - because it is following the hurling. I expect this could be a very tight affair and I think it could end in a draw.

Can't wait for the hurling :D:D...I think I'll skip the parade this year to watch it. Being from Galway, I'm supporting Portumna...
As for the football, I could care less...

I'm a Kilmurry Ibrickane man so expect some unbelieveable bias from me on this thread. :D

In all seriousness, we are up against it on Wednesday. St. Galls are a quality team, and I think they will play far better against us than they did against Corofin. Its going to be hard to call which way it'll go.

As for the hurling, a good few of my mates are from Portumna and i'll be tied up and flung into Lough Derg if I dont shout for them. However my gut feeling is that Ballyhale might just shade it. Everyone is talking about the Canning/Shefflin showdown. Its going to be a cracker.

    Finally: G'wan Kilmurry!!

I never said I was going to leave after the hurling, I just said that the hurling this year is the bigger game and maybe it should be on second. I will stay for the football and see how it goes, even though I have no vested interest in who wins it.

I wouldnt crib too much about the hurling being on first.I can remember a couple of years ago when ballyhale won the all ireland they were on second and to be honest it was the dullest game of hurling i had ever seen and came after a more exciting football final between crossmaglen and dr crokes.

look at when portumna won it back in 2006.everyone was saying that themselves and newtown would be the game of the year and was a poor game.

on paper the hurling should be a good game but it could turn out to be a damp squib.the last 3 hurling finals have been won by 8-19 points whereas the football has a 1-3 point difference going back to 2003.

Just say for instance that canning and hayes hit a purple patch and score 4-5 goals.if there is more than 9 points in the game it leads to a bad atmosphere if it was on second.there is more often than not a closer football final than a hurling one.

I must say aswell that the club final day is one of the most boring days in the calendar year unless your own club or rival team is involved.no buzz at all and lots of empty seats.they should move these to thurles in my opinion to generate some atmosphere.

As regards the finals Portumna and Kilmurry would be my tips.kilmurry will have nothing to lose and may cope with the day better.

The weather spoiled that game. It was an absolutely awful day, strong wind and freezing cold. It took me a couple of hours and a few hot whiskies to thaw out after that. You were never going to get a good game in those conditions.

The reason for the high winning margins in the hurling has been simply that Portumna were far superior to the opposition. Last year they were in a different league to De La Salle, the year before they hammered a Birr team who were probably reaching their sell by date at that stage. This time around Ballyhale should be much more of a test.

I must say aswell that the club final day is one of the most boring days in the calendar

I would massively disagree with you there. I go most years and find it one of the most enjoyable dates on the GAA calendar. To win an All-Ireland at club level means more to people than the county version. I remember when Dara O'Cinneide retired he was asked if he had any regrets or disappointments from his playing career, and he said that by far his biggest disappointment was losing the club final with An Gaeltacht in 2004, because he knew that the chance probably wouldn't come again. (because, needless to say, it's hard enough to win the county championship let alone get to an All-Ireland final).

Strongly disagree with this, especially the bit about moving it to Thurles.
Would be even less buzz and probably even more empty seats. Also for the clubs playing in Croke Park is a big deal.

I do think that the GAA should try and attract some of the foreign tourists who are around Dublin on Paddy's day out to Croker. Given how close Croker is to town and the parade, they should do some work to attract the foreign tourists. Educate them a bit about the games, their history, the club/parish structure, the place of the GAA in Irish society. Took some tourists who were visiting friends of mine a few years back and they loved it.

Very disappointing from Portumna, 5 points as of the 30mins, not good enough at any level, they don't look like the team going for 3 in a row

Ballyhale 0-11 to 0-05 up at half time. Looks like it's theirs to lose. Some great defending to deny Portumna.

0-11 to 0-5 for Ballyhale at half time.

In truth, Ballyhale should probably be a few more points up. Lots of aimless long balls and speculative shots.

25 eur to see the club finals is a joke. I don't believe that the price has ever been this high. Now granted those who wanted to attend could have purchased a ticket yesterday for 15, it's not the point. I'm a regular at Croke Park on Paddy's Day. It's more often something I decide to do on the day. However, this year I'll be purchasing a few more pints with the money I've saved. Mind you it's not suprising, only a few months ago I paid 15 quid to see a Division 4 Football League game. Joke

St Galls 0-9 to 1-1 up with the second half just started. Kilmurry-Ibrickane started brilliantly with an early goal but they've been very poor since. I reckon St Galls are going to run away with it in this half.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,729 ✭✭✭Pride Fighter

This is an awful game of football. Both teams lack the basic skills. At least St.Galls can put the ball over the bar.

Thats an hour of my life I want back.

was the goal really the keepers fault? I would have thought the defender (forget who it was) should never have made that pass back in the first place. He should have just whipped it to the sideline.

Anyway, I'm delighted to see the Shamrocks win and I'd like to thank the barman in the Clarion, Cork city for switching it on over from the Cheltenham races:)

It has to be the red and green jerseys but that was awful muck of a game. Its on a par with the Mayo Dublin game 2 weeks back.

How in the name of God did Kilmurry get to a final!!! Just seemed to be a bunch of lads who were eager to kick on site.

One thing which confuses the hell out of me and it was pulled up on a number of occassions today, but the hand pass.
One lad got pulled open palmed pass, another for passing with the punch. So which is it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,328 ✭✭✭dartbhoy

2 poor finals today. Kilmurry-Ibrickane seemed to be overawed by the occasion and it made for an easy day for St Galls to capture their 1st All Ireland club football title. The hurling was a poor game and as bad as Portumna were they were still in it until that terrible mistake by the goalie. There hasn't been a good club hurling final with years.
