Jaysus! Any idea what started it? It couldn't of been lightning, nothing on the radar.

If you'll notice we haven't had much any rain in a while. Wicklow must be like a tinderbox atm.

I can see it from my window, I drove to have a look aswell (as you do). Looks like most of the hill is burnt. The wind isnt helping either!

I have a mate who lives in the middle of a bog, literally, and there are quite a few houses around.
Every few years there is a bog fire, no major flames but lots of smouldering and a ridicolous amount of smoke.
But no one wants to be the one to ring the fire brigade. Why?
Because there's a €500 call out charge just for making the bloody phone call!

I couldn't believe it but he swears its true, had to get onto a TD to get the charge lifted before

The first 30 seconds of this went through my head when I read the title.

Ridiculously enough, it is true. Calling out the fire brigade has a cost depending on where you live. There was a whole Gerry Ryan show about it a few months back.

Buy a pay as you go mobile, don't register it, keep for emergency use.

Throw it into the fire before they arrive to destroy the evidence.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,228 ✭✭✭epgc3fyqirnbsx

That is bloody ridicolous, weighing up risk of life vs pocket

Sorry slasher, but I have to call bollocks on this. Maybe if it's a false alarm in your own house, but you can phone in a fire without giving your credit card details or calling from a personal number.

Edit: Depending on the area you are right. Although I assume for a forest fire the owner is responsible and not the person who phones it in.

    * Charges

Some local authorities have placed charges on certain Fire Service functions, such as a flat fee for domestic fires like chimney fires, and may seek the actual cost to them as a charge on commercial fires, forestry fires, false alarms and instances that require the use of special equipment.

read Millicents post but yeah, I would have thought it pretty hard to enforce unless you ring on a landline

just a farmer burning bushes.....spread a little too much i guess

I just googled and edited my post. That is crazy, it seems all our taxes are just spent on TD's wages and doll fees, we have to pay for all our 'public' services.

I still reckon the charge would have to be to either the starter or owner of the property on fire and not the innocent bystander who phones it in.

    That's not true

These are seasonal fires. Common around the counties.

There was a hill fire somewhere off the M8 on Sunday. I don't think it was the middle of nowhere, but certainly somewhere close to it.

Meh, happens every year, perfectly normal.
Its just people burning the gorse, maybe a little out of control.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭hobochris

The fire was started by the church to get the attention away from them, you know, over the whole touching molesting kids thing..
