Great find, deep1 ... I'll be right off to o2. Lets see if they come up with decent offers to try to prevent us all from moving to another carrier. :)

same old rip off ireland, wanting you to have toped up by €150. the uk don't have any such demands.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,739 ✭✭✭Stuxnet

can you still request unlock if your still in contract, doesn't make any difference to me. just wondering.
have you to do your 18 months first ?

Nothing mentioned about contract so i think yes.

    Nice one OP! :)

Have PM'd my details off to O2.

Don't want to change network but would be great to have this phone unlocked for when I upgrade...

compulsory update to 3.1.3 for unlock i'd imagine ?
should be able downgrade to 3.1.2 with cydia servers then and re-jailbreak a fully unlocked phone !

150 quid?! I'll stick to my blacksn0w :pac:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 150 ✭✭time42play

Since I was nearly up to 150 anyway I just topped up another bit and sent in my request. Worth it (to me) to get the phone unlocked!! Like Dades I'm not planning to change straight away, but have an American PAYG sim I want to use in it when I'm there. No more carrying two phones!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 291 ✭✭Popple3

Delighted with this. Mine was bought second hand and went through a full contract.

Been using ultrasn0w up to now, but it'll be a relief not to have to worry about firmware updates in the future. I'll even be able to try the 4.0 betas now when they hit (as long as that's before my iPhone Developer Connection sub'n runs out), which is a massive plus for me

Wish they would just charge a few quid for it , I never used a 02 sim card ever in my phone

Fuming there charging 150!! Have never used o2 sim either!! They are a joke- payed nearly 600 for the phone now they want another 150? Is there anyway around this?

Why are you fuming? You have not been an O2 customer, so why would you be entitled to a free unlock?

I think it is great that they are finally doing it. Wonder if they will do the same for the iPhone 4G when it is released in the Summer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,034 ✭✭✭mad muffin

So I'm wondering, now that o2 are unlocking iPhones and other networks are selling them, will Apple be selling unlocked iPhones (and possibly the "4G" when it comes out).

The only reason I'm thinking this is because other countries that have multiple networks selling the iPhone, you can buy direct from Apple an unlocked iPhone in that country.

This is great news. It was obvious they were going to have stipulations about amount of credit used or something. Its better than the bolt on thing you have to pay for in the UK. I think its a fair way of doing it. I wonder how long after you PM'd your details will you get the confirmation text?

I bought a (brand new) iPhone 3G off adverts last May. I opened the box and registered it on iTunes (using my o2 number etc.).

I've used it since then. I'm bill pay but not in a contract (clear sim with 30 days opt out).

    Will O2 unlock my handset?

I don't think so. It appears that you need to be on an iPhone-specific plan, but you can always ask.

For reference, if you're bill pay and still in contract, you can get the phone unlocked, because they sent my request through today.

From O2's POV, it makes no difference because if you're still in contract you can't go running off to another provider.

Yes they will, i am on same plan and my request has gone through, it doesn't matter o2 treat clear plan as bill pay, it's same like someone bought ph on PAYG and spend €150 or spend €150 on clear plan.
    send your request.

Just to clear up the concerns regarding the €150. We are not asking you to top up with €150 in one go as payment. It is the cumulative top ups since you go the phone. This has been the required criteria for all phones on Pre-pay since we started as a business.

Has anyone received a text yet saying its active? I am concerned something is after going wrong with my request to unlock?

"We can start collecting request’s today, so at this point we are asking that Customers who wish to unlock their iPhones provide us with their IMEI code. If you meet the criteria, O2 will submit this request to Apple on your behalf when the unlock process becomes available."

I presume this means that they aren't unlocking just yet.

EDIT: I might be wrong on that. Let us know if you get your iPhone unlocked!

Agreed lackofcolour, this is a bit over-hyped. Let's wait until the unlocks start happening (and see how long after Vodafone official launch that is) before jumping up with joy.

    Hi,

I have a 1st Gen iPhone which I would eventually like unlocked.

I qualify for all criteria set out by o2.

But I’m not entirely sure how the IMEI code thing works.

Can I get the IMEI code number from the phone I am using at the minute or will I need to remove the simcard and put it into the old iPhone (which is the one I want to unlock) to retrieve the IMEI code, in order for o2/Apple to figure which phone I wish to unlock?
Or perhaps the "code" you get back from o2/Apple to sync in iTunes will work with any phone, once you are approved for unlocking?

    Sorry for being so confusing.

    Thanks for your time.

    Mel.

anyone know if this will be the case, or will it be something similar to the carrier update, where you just accept it and its applied...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 171 ✭✭SpodoKamodo

I got a gift of an iPhone last September. I have always been on o2 pa as you go, so I didn't use the sim I got with it, I put in my old one. As a result, the phone is going to show that I topped up zero credit on it, when in fact I have topped up well over the 150 euro. Knowing o2, there'll be no chance that I can get the phone unlocked.

I think it should be similar to Carrier update and might need to restore if anything goes wrong.( Hopefully not)

Guys on the forum are very helpful, give them the IMEI and number you are using ( not the number you got with ph) and should not be any problem.

The unlock code will be associated to the IMEI you will give, so give them the IMEI Of the ph you want to unlock.

We have to send off the codes to Apple in batches. It will be some time in the next 14 days that phones will start unlocking as they are plugged in.

If you get your text and you have failed to get the phone unlocked because of the criteria but you think you have met them let me know, I can investigate it. I am not going to turn you down flat, it's not how we work.

    Hi Daryll,

I bought the phone off adverts last May (guy was selling on an upgrade he got).

And I replaced my Nokia with the iPhone.

I was and still am on the sim clear bill play plan.

It was said today on the O2 forum that texts wouldn't come through for a few days even though the process is underway.

The IMEI's are sent off in Batches. I sent off the first IMEI and I am not expecting a text at least until the end of this week.

Grrrrrrrr. I bought my 3GS on PrePay and paid the full price for it (600 euro plus) but I haven't topped it up at all. I think it still has the free credit thing that came with it. I don't expect I will be putting a further 150 euro credit on it anytime soon either :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,731 ✭✭✭Type 17

For the record, I requested on the 11th March, and I've just received a text from O2:

"O2 have submitted your unlock request for iPhone IMEI nnnnnnnnnnnnnnn to Apple. Apple should unlock the device via iTunes within the next two weeks. O2."

I am not on an iPhone price plan, but I am still in contract (I only want the unlock for medium-term roaming, etc).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 150 ✭✭time42play

Just got that text as well!

Update: and it's unlocked now too!!

I bought mine Prepay but then switched to one of the clear sim billpay packages for the data. So I'm not tied into a contract, will I be able to get my phone unlocked? Spent well over €150 at this stage, but via bill not top-up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,731 ✭✭✭Type 17

Contact the O2 guys as per the instructions in the O2 Forum.

Once you've spent over the €150 that they're mentioning for pre-pay handsets, then it should be fine.

Whether you are in contract at present is not the issue - however, they do want you to have spent enough money to cover the handset subsidy that was paid when you bought the handset at a less than SIM-free price.

If the replacement phone came through official Applecare channels etc, you should be able to sort it out with O2/Apple.
Hunt out the documentation/case numbers etc that you have from the replacement event...

Yeah got the same here, only twigged now that I had my phone replaced under warranty. I've asked on the forum what the story is with registering that IMEI with O2.

    @skyuser

what was the process for the unlocking

by chance do you have the phone jailbroken

did it ask you to update the firmware/did you lose jailbreak

appears that anyone who had an applecare or O2 replacement got the same message, they have to register your new IMEI with your account before re-requesting the unlock. Suppose it's only an extra week to wait, but you would think they would have known to do that before the first request.

I had it jailbroken. Nothing happens when you plug it into iTunes. You need to click either 'Update' if you have lower software or 'Restore'. After that iTunes communicates with Apple and sends out the unlock.
Obviously the jailbreak will be lost but i think the software can be downgraded to 3.1.2 and rejailbroken.

Does any of you have Insurance on the handset replaced by apple.
