Well i wasnt on the lookout for a change in car for another while, but i came across this about a month ago, put a deposit on it as he was going to be driving it untill he got his new car on the road, and finally bought it today.

Good points 2003 Toyota Avensis Luna 1.8 Saloon, 1 owner from new, FTSH, New gearbox and clutch only replaced, drives like new!!.

Not many bad points, a small bit of body work needed and needs a drivers seatbelt (frayed at the edge) Got it very cheap too.

Oh yea almost forgot, it was a taxi since day one and the miles are a fraction high:

Wow! That's some figure and certainly doesn't look like it's done that.

    Was it a taxi?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 393 ✭✭Gitb1

    How much?

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 17,861 Mod ✭✭✭✭Henry Ford III

2c, and it was still overpriced :D

p.s. Looks tidy enough all things considered. The mileage is 1.5 journeys to the moon!!!!!

Mark it was used as a taxi from day one. To give you a idea of how much i paid for it, 4 years i bought my current driver a '96 Carina, I paid €200 more for the Avensis than i did the Carina.

New gearbox and clutch... I was gonna say these things are usually bulletproof but then I saw the mileage.

Obviously an ex-taxi... Don't be cryptic and just tell us how much!

That leather? Looks tidy enough - nothing that a good valet won't fix:D

    Best of luck with it!

EDIT - Bargain price - looks like a multiple of that

Yer grand so, labour is the killer most of the time anyway. Looks like it was really taken care of on the round trip to the moon;). Good luck with it.

P.S. I presume this model doesn't come with the automatic accelerator feature!!

No they've only brought the automatic accelerator feature in for 2008 onwards. I think the no brakes feature might be on the 2003 model though!

I thought you were sticking to the Carina's for life!
Why the new user name and new car? You seemed very happy with both!
Well wear with the new one.

1600 is alot for something with crazy mileage like that. I think its not worth that amount. These werent nice when new so Im sure its not too nice now. You are going to be taxiing this, surely your fare paying passengers deserve more than a car of that age & mileage.

I think he meant "airbag". Any cars with SRS airbags have seat belt pretensioners, which are probably quite expensive to replace (they contain explosives like airbags). I'd assume the belt on its own can be replaced separately from this though - in VB's case it's just the belt that is damaged.

The only equivalent on carzone is €6250, being nice is down to personal taste and it comes inside the regulations. It looks to be in good condition too so I don't see what your problem is

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,791 ✭✭✭JJJJNR

I suppose the 1600 euros would cover the gearbox, clutch and labour. Looks like a car with 31k.. give the clockers a call...... ;)

Whats it like on the road drive wise., toyota jokes aside ! have any suspension work done?

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    Petrol?

    Manual?

Only kiddin' - best of luck with it. Can't really say well wear in this case though :D

Fair play OP, they're a grand car.

I suppose the worst thing that can happen is the engine finally explodes!!!:D

How much would a 2nd hand avensis engine be?

You have to bear in mind though that the asking prices on carzone are very rarely what they're selling at.

But it will still be a multiple of 3 on that price at least

Good man i was the same as you when i was that age. I like people like you that can go out and pick up a good car like that for small money. By the way i was only thinking of you the other day i see a load of avensis and carinas going for scrap:(:(. Some nice ones too with fogs/ alloys etc great car always..............................

Ok, knock 50% off the one on carzone and you get €3125, cut that in half again and it's €1562.50 and Volvoboy only paid €37.50 more than this for his car, which in my book is a bargain

It is very good I admit, but you'd expect it to be with 314k miles. I myself know that car is fine, but convincing the typical Irish punter who thinks anything with over 100k is going to implode soon renders it worthless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78 ✭✭garyt43

I know a taxi man from ballina who drives a vw vento and has over 800k on the clock:) so at 314k id say ur sorted for a while...best of luck wit it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,912 ✭✭✭I Was VB

Thanks for the responces, the Carina is going to stay in the family (Going to be used as my da's second car as he has a 00 320 that is sitting in the drive way just taking up space and more importantly tax!!)

I couldnt bare to let it go, The Avensis on the other hand i feel nothing for (yet??) I cannot fault the way the car drives, the owner before me looked after it (It has every stamp upto 309K from Murphy and Gunn).

I wouldnt be supprised if it passes first time, as for those implying that at that mileage the car is in bits, this is my 24th car i've bought in the space of 4 years and i've never bought a car with unknown problems, sure i buy them with a bit of work needed.

If the odometer read 31K i would belive it.

    Very good deal you got.

I suppose with a car once the shell is in good order you can replace part after part and if your doing the labour yourself even better.

Looks clean, I like the leather.... not the mileage though:pac:

I am a auto fan, i kinda fell into them as the Carina was a with a autobox. But i've no problem with manuals, as working with them goes it will take a bit of getting used to, i've already had a few ''crunchy'' moments.

I bet from now on it will have every stamp every 6k from I Was VB :D

Nice car OP, my old man currently drives a similar one which used to be my car for over 4 years from new. A little less mileage than yours with just over 200k miles on the clock. They are nowhere near as bad as being made out by some on this forum.

At €1600 even if you got a few months out of it then it ows you very little. €1600 is a fraction of the cost of a year's depreciation on a new average family hatchback. Just keep an eye on the oil level though as the 1.8 litre VVTi starts consuming more as the mileage builds up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 134 ✭✭simoniz

not bad on the price, but 1000k miles a week looks like a taxi 24/7:)
