Do You 'Hoard' Stuff?

Don't think I've started a thread in here for a while... Lucky you lot.

Anyway, is it just me or do other people, as the title says, 'hoard' stuff?

I'm terrible for it. My last wallet was literally bursting at the seams with train tickets, cinema tickets and the odd bus ticket. I just can't seem to chuck stuff out... my wardrobe's overflowing with eleven years' worth of school books, and old bits and bobs. Half the stuff on the top floor is old toys that I just can't bear to chuck out... I really have difficulty binning stuff.

Does anyone else do this or is it just me?

It's stupid getting rid of anything at all, which is my main reason for having a septic tank. We've also got sagging ceilings thanks to stuff being thrown up in the attic. One of these days we're just going to be crushed to death.

I will do for a while, but then once every 6 months or so I'll throw out tons of random crap from my room because it gets so bad I can't even walk around it anymore

If I look at something and think "ah you never know, it could come in useful some day" it most likely won't. But I do hold on to some bits and bobs for their sentimental value etc. I'd say I'm somewhere in between hoarder and "clearer".

I keep anything that my nephews/nieces make for me. i have scraps of paper lying around that are like 14yrs old.
I also have a tendancy to just throw bits of paper in the drawer without looking to see if they are important or not-i found a receipt for petrol from 2years ago on my dressing table over the weekend:eek:

No, I can't stand any sort of clutter. I even throw my bills out once I've read them

Yes, I used to hoard records and comics. Classical music LPs from the 50s and 60s, rock records from the 70s, 2000 AD comics from the 80s, Archie comics from the 90s and Manga from the 2000s. And what a drag it was lugging it all around every time I moved house. Losing my job and being thrown onto the dole queue was a blessing in disguise because I had to break the hoarding habit. And later I sold something like seven eighths of my comics and records and got a decent price for them!

Why do people keep bus tickets?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,995 ✭✭✭Sofiztikated

    Yes, oh gawd yes.

I have every payslip I have ever gotten, every p60, every bit of literature a bank/building society/credit union has ever given me, I have stubs from every show I've went to, a heap of cinema tickets, envelopes, I hate throwing out socks, even the odds that you can't even try and swing a match of from other odds.

I have teeshirts that are too worn and threadbare to ever be used as clothing again, but I can't throw them out.

I have jeans that no longer have a definable shape, but they could be useful for something.

I truely am my fathers son.

Her indoors has to do a raid on my wardrobe every year while I'm at work, and get rid of some stuff. I won't even notice its gone until I go rooting around to try and bring myself to throw something out, and I notice its gone, and then there is usually a short exchange of words.

Nope. I keep things tidy with a teutonic efficiency. I dont even allow my pc to have more than 1 active system restore point at a time!

i dont. I have a few things but not much. I can't stand the thought of someone having to deal with a load of crap when I die, or it rotting away for eternity in some dump. I've been at my folks now to start downgrading the amount of clutter they have so I wont have to deal with it when they die. Lovely son I am!

    I can't throw stuff away :(

I've got a drawer full of USB cables, I go to throw them out and then I think, I might use them one day, I might need back ups and back up-back ups.

I still have my school uniforms, I stll have my books. I still have some of my toys :o

One of them is a Sea Monkey tank, I don't even have any of those hatching kits left but I still keep it 'just in case'

Oh man I miss my Sea Monkeys :( I had a good few and they had names...

I'm a bit of a hoarder. I've got bills and stuff from ages. Pay slips from my first job over ten years ago. Really old mobile phones that are heavier than a brick etc.
The funny thing is I tend to get rid of clothes, if I don't wear something for a couple of months I give it to charity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,217 ✭✭✭pookie82

Yes I do, but I blame my Dad, who is the ultimate hoarder. He has a huge shed FULL of stuff that will "one day come in very handy" from old paint cans to random bits of wood and galvanise. He can NOT get rid of anything. :)

I'm a bit of a hoarder too. I'd like to be able to get rid of some of my old stuff but I just can't :o

Tea towels - I have a drawer full of them. They are all clean, boiled to within an inch of their lives, and quite a few have been chewed by one of the dogs but still usable! Cleaning products is another, I will keep them until the bottle is totally empty - none of this "there's only a little bit left" or "what a crap/dodgy smelling/not useful product" talk, I'm keeping it until every last drop is used god damn it! As a result, I have quite a few products that are not quite empty but I just won't throw out. I'm working my way through them (or so I say)

They could also be worth a lot of money in 50 years time.

    Books.

Even if I hated it, and I'm absolutely certain I'll never read it again, I can never pass on, or throw out, a book.

I knew someone who used to do that but it was simply a ploy to avoid paying for public transport. After he'd collected so many old tickets, when he was asked for one, he'd pull out the bunch and go through them until the inspector got bored and moved on.

Yes. The most worthless thing I own is a rock that I took from an amusement park as a child as a memento of the holiday. And despite my hoarding, I always seem to only have 2 pairs of socks.

I don't get the chance to hoard stuff, my mum throws out literally everything that she thinks is 'clutter'.

I remember coming back from my 6th year hol and my whole room had been cleaned out, repainted and all my clothes were colour coded

She's a bit crazy my Mum

Don't really hoard stuff.. I take a sick pleasure in deleting music of my iTunes.

My worst act of not hoarding was throwing my Gamecube in the bin when I was moving house once.. I'd love it now. Even today, I cleaned my room and threw out two t-shirts cause I wasn't mad on them..

I tend to hoard religious items a lot. I buy icon after icon, my spiritual avarice just gets the better of me. and then when confronted with the proposition that I could give some away as a present I always have an excuse why I shouldnt lol :o

I have a LOT of stuff about my house.
I just keep seeing stuff I want to buy all of the time.

Every so often I have to do a clean up and dump stuff I have lost interest in.
I find I tend to collect stuff which could be considered hoarding.

Lord of the Rings Statues that came out after the films I loved, and bought
one. As soon as I bought one I wanted more, I bought loads.
The shopoholic in me was made worse when I knew they were limited
edidtion with only 500 of some and 5000 of others in the entire world.

Lord of the rings models that you paint (like warhammer)
collected a magazine for 3 years, and bought 2 copies of each issue.
1 copy was so I could paint the figures that came with the magazine,
the other copy I kept sealed and unopened in case the entire collection
was worth anything in years to come. (its not!)
I also got into painting the models, and ended up with about 1-2000 models sitting around in boxes
waiting to be painted. (which I never got around to doing)
(Apparently this is common with that type of hobby)

Model Making, Bought rubber molds to make little bricks that could be
glued together to make model buildings. I cast thousands of these bricks
and said I would stark making models, made a few but never used up the
bricks so have loads around the house that I just cant throw out as I think
it would take ages to make them again, and that one day I will use them.

I went through a phase of keeping magazines on different subjects
and also had a nasty habit of printing out Ebooks with the intent to read
about something I had an interest in.................10 years go by and I found
I still had not go round to reading anything. When I went to dump
stuff I could not just dump everything. I had to selectively decide which
ones to dump and ended up keeping a few.

Airsoft guns. I have a room full of them. I bought one thought they
were cool and wanted one of each gun you could get. As soon as I
buy one, I want to buy another.

Empty shells, I used to go target shooting with my rifle, had
a habit of keeping my empty shells in a box just to see visually how
many rounds I've fired from the gun instead of dumping them.

Cats. Took in a stray cat one day, and saved a litter of feral kittens one
stormy night. Could not catch the feral mother and they bred. I've now got
11 cats much to the annoyance of my neighbors.

Newspapers and Plastic Bags. These tend to build up in our house.
Keep thinking we will need the newspaper to line the Cats litter trays
but end up with loads of newspapers, end up dumping them when the
accumulate to critical mass. Plastic bags, I tend to goto the shop on my way home after work. I tend to not take plastic bags with me to work so on the way home I keep buying plastic bags when Im at the shop (as have none with me)

    DVD's/Music/PC games/Backups of computer files.
Have a habit of keeping Pics, Ebooks, copies of webpages
I literally had a fantastic collection of DVD's that was touching the ceiling. Had backups of all my PC games and back ups of back ups of all
my CD's as MP3's Before I knew it I was buying DVD's not watching them,
and had music that I had no interest in. Every few months I end up
having to dump a load of discs. and becuase I am paranoid I cut the
discs up before I dump them.

Files/Ebooks/MP3's also I tend to end up with a load of them that I have
no interest in. I keep thinking Oh my friend would like this or that and keep them just in case anyone asks me for info or music.

Have all my payslips for the last 10 years which I really must dump or burn.

Have letters from penpals and ex-girlfriends from nearly 2 decades ago.

old id badges from the 90's, a few nightclub flyers from the 90's

I still have my old FCA uniform from when I was a teenager that I keep for
sentimental value and just cant dump.

I've a tent that I have not used in 15 years.

Pens/Biros/refill pads/Stationary tons of this at home.

Books I used to have LOAD's but am down to having a few on the shelf
in the wardrobe in my box room.

    ~B
