the co2 footprint of that rail network will be huge before the first train starts rolling and if you look at a map of Europe/Asia there are loads of countries that you'd prefer not to have to travel through if you could avoid it.

You're saying the CO2 footprint of trains will be bigger than thousands of flights every year????

the impact on local wildlife would be huge

the idea of more specialized turbo-prop freight planes is more sensible..

but i'm sure this vanity project will prevail anyway.....
only to have speed limited to 120 or 150 because they didn't build it well enough

Given his post I assume he's talking about the CO2 produced during construstion of the project. It's a fairly large engineering project which would require new lines/tunnels etc. Supposedly circa one tonne of CO2 is produce per tonne of concrete.

Of course the interest post is Sponge Bob's, as can be seen the Chinese are actually reducing spend on railway. given that chinese industrial production is down I can't see them funding a 10k km railway line that's mostly outside of their border.

Yes, probably. Turboprops sip fuel. Air ships if they ever work will use even less fuel and there is no energy input in the infrastructure which is thin air.
There is a reason why such a large proportion of all the animals on earth are winged creatures; it's a very efficient method of getting from point A to point B.

On first glance this seems like a 'pie in the sky' plan that's caught the imagination of a newspaper writer.
2 days London-Beijing, would many people be interested in paying the hefty ticket price for the time required to whiz through Myanmar and Turkey.

China is bound to be drawn into some fight in the next 15 years, or whatever scale that will affect their economic trajectory, so many of these pipe dreams will remain just that.
