Came across this on the O2 forum. Sky sports channels App is now free on the app sore for Ireland. Subscription of €7 a month gets you sky sports 1 2 3 sports news espn and sky news. Reports are favourable on quality. 3g and wifi enabled and only about a 20 second lag. Got it this evening and works real well.

Whats the level of data used for say a minute. I'd imagine this would chew through O2's measly 1gb a month.

    Bend over.

You can buy one on Deal Extreme for 5 bucks which initially works perfectly - except after 30 secs the 3G realises it's not an official Apple product and cuts playback. i.e. It's unusable.

The Apple one has a chip in it - not to make it better - just to make sure you don't buy from somewhere else.

I don't know if its true, but I read some of the you tube tutorials on how to hook it up to your tv, it stated that you don't actually need the official apple cable..the guy said you can buy cheap ones on ebay that state that they don't work with 3.0 onwards, but he mentioned an app in cydia that would enable it to work just like the official one...

edit: just checking there, the apps from cydia you need are: 'Landsacpe tv out' or 'TV out'and under the settings you have to enable 'force tv out' option..

Nice one - so you don't have to splash out on the rip of official apple product! Good stuff!

Wow theyve gone up! I paid €39 about 12 months ago for both the component and composite video from apple. the plus side though is that they come with a charger with both standard and european adapters

can any1 give an idea of how much data this uses over 3g? I have a 250mb bundle, not worth a sh1te for this I'm guessing, I'd have to move to the 10GB bundle...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,763 ✭✭✭Jax Teller

the app needed for making the cheap cables work is called resupported http://cydia.saurik.com/package/com.phoenix.resupported
    1.99 it is

how long is a piece of string,
if your gonna watch a whole match and not on wifi, yes it will eat into your allowance big time, i cant tell you 90 mins =s eg 400 mb ? who knows, youd be silly not to use this on wifi ! for anyone on proper iphone tarrifs, they will have sufficient bandwidth allowance i'd imagine, not like you'd be on it 24/7 the odd game a month when you cant get down to the bar stool for whatever reason

wonder it there's any regional restrictions on this

    like geoblocking

i'll be travelling for a few months stateside and the subscription could save alot of hassle

Can you add the mobile add on to your existing Sky bill? Just seems to give me a credit card option.

Very tempted by this. Got rid of the movies and sports on my tv package at christmas which saves me 40 euro a month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 383 ✭✭lpool2k05

Watched arsenal porto on it tonight!!Picture perfect!!Defo worth 7 euro a month :)

When I search for this app in the app store I can't see it. Can someone link me to it please?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,625 ✭✭✭✭BaZmO*

Is this just the normal skysports app? In the video section it says that it's €5.99 for a monthly subscriptions and it only seems to be for highlights?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,519 ✭✭✭irish1967

I just searched app store for word "sky" and up it came.

No it's a seperate app. 7 euro a month and the channels are live. Signed up this evening as you only have to commit to one month.

The apps called Sky Mobile Tv News And Sports. It's not on the American store if you are logged into that account?

does this package include ESPN? including premiership on ESPN, if so I would be very much tempted!!

Yeah it includes ESPN. It does have some restrictions, Serie A and some American sportsare blocked but the Premier League is shown. Have a read of the terms and conditions for full details

You only have to subscribe for a month if you want so no long term commitment.

Thanks for that. It actually looks quite good, and as you've said, you only need to subscribe for a month so I might actually do that to see what it's like. Although, it's probably no use unless it can be connected to a TV.

The other Sky Sports App (free) that I downloaded is brilliant. Probably the most professional App that I've downloaded. The video streaming of the after match interviews is crystal clear. You have to subscribe €5.99 a month to see match highlights.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,026 ✭✭✭✭adox

The video quality on this app is excellent, certainly up to the standard of the skysports news app. It's actually not too bad watching a match on such a small screen. That how I'll be using the app, short term at least.
There are some bids up on YouTube specific to this app if you want to connect to a screen

Does anyone know if this will also work on the Itouch, or is it exclusive to the iphone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,076 ✭✭✭steve_r

Very welcome development - I'm paying €30 a month for the sky sports package so €7 is great value.

would be worried about the data consumption bit though. Sky don't do shoddy quality so I'd say it would be resource heavy

I'm using it on my iPod touch over wifi.

Does anyone know if the Skysports channels on this app are interactive? I'll be subscribing if the Football First choose a game option is functional...also very useful in the group stages of Champions league when you can pick your match. So, can anyone shed some light on this for me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 374 ✭✭brian2614

Anyone got it hooked up and working over through their TV yet?

All the vids on youtube just show that it works, but none showing how to set it up and what is needed.

    Great app!

Signed up today and must say quality even over 3G is amazing... but is very heavy on data usage, no problem over wifi though...

One question, I paid the €7 monthly charge but will I automatically be charged each month or will I be asked to pay?

Not sure if I will keep it after my first month, how do I unsubscribe / opt out if I decide I want to?

i've been looking at DealExtreme for to buy a AV Cable to hook up my ipod touch (3rd Gen) to my telly over wi-fi to watch sky sports but it looks like the reviews on the cables are varied i.e. some don't work, some are cheaply made etc.

anyone got any links to where I can buy a cable (for cheap, hopefully).

    thanks.

+1, it's incredible. Watched the golf live on SS2 all day yesterday. It even has pause and rewind!

I assume guys like me on unlimited data have nothing to worry about data wise. It might seem dumb question but it wouldn't be the first time O2 caught me out with small print...

don't know for sure, but I'd say if your hitting around an average of an hour a day(over3g/edge), then there is a very real possibility you will exceed your "unlimited" 3 gig data allowance.

    Great app!

All you need is the AV cable (see my previous post)

I needed to make some minor tweaks to the screen size and position within the TVOut setting (available through your iphone settings) and I had to change the TV compatibility layer from 1 to 2 because the touch marker wasn't working.
Changing to layer 2 allows you to select channels on your ipod/iphone.

The link you posted, it states does not work with iPhone, but you got it working. Apart from tweaks you mentioned above, did you need to do anythmg else?

AV cables on ebay say will only support iphone 3G with firmware 2.2 or less.
Is this because apple locked down 3rd party cables from 2.2 on? But it'll work with a jailbroken iphone 3gs running 3.1.2 with landscape tv out or some other cydia app?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,951 ✭✭✭fdevine

Sorry, I should have stated that I'm using a jailbroken 3GS.

The TVOut Cydia app that's mentioned elsewhere has a 'force TV out' option for non-compatible cables.

I did see some compatible ones on ledshoppe.com for <$10. Have used this site before. Looks dodgy but isn't. Cannot vouch for their cable compatibility though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 601 ✭✭✭garlad

So will one of these av cables work:

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/AV-CABLE-FOR-APPLE-iPHONE-3G-TOUCH-2G-NANO-3G-4G-VIDEO_W0QQitemZ280478672577QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CE_MP3Access_RL?hash=item414dd4e6c1#ht_3692wt_982

It states only firmware 2.2 and below, but maybe with jailbroken device and some cydia app, it will work ???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭JacksDad

    Just my two cents worth..

Watched the Liverpool V Portsmouth game last night on ESPN.
Couldn't fault the quality although a little taxing on the eyes at times.

Have the AV leads on order from eBay due to land in the next day or so.
Looking forward to getting hooked up!:D
