Do You Drive Over The Speed Limit??

Personally I always drive at least a few miles per hour (or k/ph bloody metric system) over the speed limit.
I honestly think that motorway driving is extremely safe and that even if you do crash at 120k/ph, you're screwed, so what does another 10 k/ph on top of that matter?

So does you drive over the speed limit?

There's a few roads about where the speed limit is mad-if you drove at 30mph on them you'd get blown off the road.
    So sometimes i do yes...

    I sure do.

The majority of speed limits in this country are a joke.

ah ya sometimes! Not through a town or near a school but out on a main road/dual cw/ motorway ya i would.

*damn IP address speeding ticket on the way

I do, people need to learn how to drive properly and the fact is a modern day car is maybe 10 times better at just about everything than a car from 20 years ago (which is where our laws are based). They brake better and they corner better.

I've seen people having a chat with the person in the seat beside them and they'll be just the kind of person that will complain when you pass them out and they'r just the kind of person that will do 80klm on the main road and keep doing it once they enter a 30 klm speed zone like those within a town or city.

The speed limit is a joke and just pandering to the most useless in society. Every person that drives a car should be thought to the highest of standards, they should know cars inside and out and know the physical limitations of the vehicle their driving.

It's hard not to in Dublin.

The Speed limit is a joke in most places.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,783 ✭✭✭Hank_Jones

How about people who can't gauge how fast people in the other lane are going?
So they just pull out and about 5 cars have to slam on the brakes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,783 ✭✭✭Hank_Jones

Driving at 30 k/ph is almost impossible.

To be honest I tried it once, didn't like it...so I never did it again.

We should impose a 30k speed limit on the M50 and speed ramps too. And maybe traffic lights every 50 yards just for the craic too just to be consistent with the rest of the roads in our blessed Republic

the limits on roads around dublin are a joke. i use the n4 for everything, 80km on a 3 lane road. i dont know anyone who doesnt break it to be honest. i speed on roads like that yet i wouldnt dream of going near the limit on some of the roads down the country where its 100km on a road with grass in the middle-suicide!

Have yet to see a road with grass growing in the middle of it with a 100klm speed limit.

On motorways i don't see the harm going 130km/h, that's the limit for motorways in most other European countries and their safety record is much better than ours.

And OP, the Metric System is cool:cool:

If your speedo is reading 130kph, you are probably driving closer to 118-120kph. Most cars speedo are out by about 10% (on the slow side)
Add to that that a lot of Gards (certainly not all) will give you a 10% leeway (ie 12kph on 120 roads, 6 kph on 60 roads etc) then youd be very unlucky to snag a ticket driving at 140kph on your speedo.
That is by no means gospel, and all bets are off when it comes to those nasty evil Nazi fucking speed cameras!

On dual carriageways I sometimes go slightly over if I've a really clear run - not deliberately, it's just that it's hard not to.
Other than that, no. Sometimes it's tempting as the speed limit is ridiculously low on some roads and it would not make you a danger to go slightly over it, but it's not worth the penalty points/fine.

This is exactly why females have lower insurance premiums.

I haven't got a speeding ticket in 8 years and I'm not a maniac by any means, but I reckon I'm nearly always over the limit. Not by much though. I don't need "a really a clear run" like Dudess to go over the limit. :pac:

Having said that I've no idea how I'm after getting away without a speeding ticket for so long. I always slow down at the Garda hotspots (that I know of), but I've been totally poxed lucky thus far. :)

I have never had ticket either.

Been photographed by the flashing Gatso a few times.

Especially the one parked opposite xTravision in Marino / Fairview (alongside the Park there).

I drive at a speed I am comfortable with. I drive slower when I have people in the car. Pretty much over the limit quite a bit, but I am not wreckless. Some roads the limits are pretty bad. Even though I consider myself to be going fast, there will always be some lunatic that will zip past you at another 20 or so miles an hour.

Yikes, not good, sorry to hear that.

I got 2 points almost 3 years ago for speeding... 10Kmph over the limit, grrr...

That clears in April though. Which is all good.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,252 ✭✭✭✭stovelid

To be honest, sometimes. Never by more than 10, and on motorways, dualers and so on. Never in low-speed zones, even the ones that I think should be set higher speed limit.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,073 ✭✭✭mickoneill30

I do sometimes. There are a couple of long straight roads near me that are set to 60Kph. Nobody does that on them.

Here's a handy graph to see where you fit in.

    Always 'speed' over the limit.
Except in towns and around schools etc

Only got 2 points..least I was doing enough over the speed limit when I got caught though, would hate to be caught only slightly over

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,130 ✭✭✭✭Kiera

I try not to. If i look down and i am, i'll slow down.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,818 ✭✭✭Minstrel27

When on a main road I don't and through a town I don't. There is one stretch of straight road however that is set to 50km/h for some unknown reason. I do sometimes go faster on that.

My sister in law drives everywhere at 80Kph, motorways, around town, country lanes, yet she calls me a lunatic for driving at 140Kph on the M8??.

The way she drives imho, is a lot more dangerous than me driving fast on a motorway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 544 ✭✭✭Cerocco

I'm a rep, what do you think :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,417 ✭✭✭Dr4gul4

In the car yes, but not by much maybe 10 - 15 Kph over 120 on the motorways depending.

On the bike, yes, 40 + over the limit but again it all depends, heavy traffic means no goin over the limit, but no traffic means moving on.

    Safety first folks.

It was the default limit up to recently, so it's the one that would have applied on any "road" that didn't have a sign.

I reckon the money spent on re-signing the whole country to km should have been better spent.

Unfortunately, in typical Irish decision-making mode, I think the idea was that the higher km figure would make people think they were going faster, and so they'd slow down.....basically - do nothing but make it seem like they did something.
