    €421.91 weekly...is that gross?

What would the net amount be after deductions and tax?

Does the pension levy come out of that too even though it's a temp job?

    It does alright:
    Pension
The terms of the Pension Scheme for non-established state employees and of the associated Contributory Spouses' and Children's Scheme for non-established state employees will apply unless you have a preserved benefit or are in receipt of benefits from another Public Service Pension Scheme. In general, 65 is the minimum age at which pension is payable. The Pension related deduction announced on 3 February, 2009 applies to this post.

It's a bit unfair in my opinion as with a temporary unestablished position you won't get the public sector pension. With all the pension deductions and taxes the net pay wouldn't be fantastic but it is a good way to get your foot in the door.

You get refunded the pension levy at the end of your contract

I never got any acknowlegement either, no email or no 'thank you, your application has been received'. Bad form, I'm just assuming it went through ok!

More than minimum wage and the dole.

to calculate net pay heres a good online calculator:

    http://www.hookhead.com/Tools/tax2010.jsp

    421.91 = just under 22k pa.

with basic (eg tax not pension) deductions its a net monthly salary of 1,683.67, or 388.54 net weekly.

Contracts are probably 3 months in duration which is standard after which you will be left go. If you're very lucky they might offer an extension after they've broken the service. Work can vary but the worst thing is listening to clowns bang on about you having a great permanent, pensionable job while you're there. :D

Really?? Let's hope if you do apply you are not placed in a social welfare office. FFS, get real.

I am living in Carlow, but I am available to work anywhere in the country. I am considering putting Dublin as the place I would prefer to work, but I am unsure. Will they see my address and not employ me because I live far away? I can move to any place on this island with a few days notice, how do I communicate this to them?

I had a temporary job just before Xmas, this lifted me out of a serious depression, I was extremely happy to be making 10 quid an hour (after deductions it wasn't much). I cannot see myself working a fulltime job for quite some time, and I think it will not be in this country either. These temporary jobs are absolutely brilliant for us unemployed.

Thanks for this OP, I would never have found it otherwise :)

I worked in the commission for well over 4 years if you apply for this and get it you would be located to a commutable distance from your home. Limerick Cork Dublin etc being most likely portlaoise perhaps they are not biased against anyones location or age etc in fact once you do the skills experience questionnaire it's all pretty automated

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,993 ✭✭✭crushproof

Also filled out the form but when I submitted it it went straight to the start page, no thank you or anything. So no idea if it went through! Fingers crossed it will, it'll keep my options open at least

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,268 ✭✭✭Elessar

Yeah I applied along with 200,000+ others on the dole I would assume!

I worked as a temp CO 4 years ago, but I hope that would stand to me.

When do they start letting people know if they're successful?

Haven't heard anything yet either, here's hoping, haven't done it before, so my chances are probably slim.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,268 ✭✭✭Elessar

I got it 4 years ago but never heard back after applying again last year. Hopefully I filled out the forms to their standard this time, a temp CO position would do nicely for the summer!

Yes, thats right, their website is a bit of a mess, some jobs are on publicjobs.ie/jobname which redirects to some other site, and others are properly integrated into the site

I applied too, but I'm wondering... EUR 380 a week, is fine, but you have a sign a contract, what is that wonderful dream job cropped up in say june and you were locked in to this thing?

im only dreaming, but can you !quit"?

Why wouldn't you be able to quit? What exactly are they going to do? Take you to court for quitting your job? It's a temp job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,445 ✭✭✭jd83

Of course you can quit. Its a good job, ive done it twice. How handy it is depends on the department they put you in. On one of the contracts I was on a friend of mine got offered another job and left 2 weeks early. In this contract the temps didnt have to clock in or out as they we werent on flexi time. They still paid him even though he didnt work for the last 2 weeks :) But its pretty handy job, if you want to see first hand how easy public servants have it, go for it.

Some folk on this thread aren't aware of what happens. We don't get a thank you for applying. Assuming the application went through ok you will be called in for a 'test' session. You have to bring in PPS No. and ID etc. You will be in a large room with about 50+ others, they take batches of 50 or more at a time, this will be happening over a period of a day or more I expect. You will probably only be 1-2 hours there. Everyone sits at a computer and someone will explain what you have to do and then 'yer off'!! Everyone starts typing in their answers. There is a time limit. Then you have to wait to hear from them to see if you got through the test.

I'd say they are swamped with applications as there are 425,000 unemployed people out there. If you have a job at the moment, you are very very lucky! I know a few people who thought they were ok, but were gone within HOURS!! Some companies give extremely short notice of redundancy. I'm sorry to say that Ireland is a bad place to be right now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,756 ✭✭✭vector

Will someone with a medical card submit an FOI request to compare this years number of applications to last years

(hopefully a journo from the Sunday Independent/Sunday Tribune will read this and we will see the figure in two weeks time)

I have been a temp C.O. for the last 3 summers running...My first contract was extended and I was there just over a year and a half. So in total I have been a T.C.O for over 2 years. If you are successful in the online questionaire you will get an email saying you are in the "top band" for your region and you will be called for interview. You DONT have to sit in front of a computer a do a test with a time limit so I dont know where you are getting this info from!!! Its just a basic interview lasting about 15mins to verify the answers you gave in the questionaire. It is always a nice pleasant interview and everyone i have talked to over the years that got called for the interview stage has always been successful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,756 ✭✭✭vector

Agreed, the only face time you have between now and day 1 (if your successful) is a 15min interview usually in some government building (not necessarily your desintation dept)

that poster mentioning apptitude tests must be thinking of applications for FULL time public jobs. although, even there ive only ehard of pen and paper tests (multiple choice using EDPAC multiple choice, fill in the box answers)

in this period of economic uncertaintly and in accordance with the minister for finances dictate there hasn't been a recruitment drive for FULL TIME CO's since like Feb 2009? or whenever the dictat was.

Hi again Skitzyspider. Maybe things are different now but I went through this process a few times several years ago, and yes we all sat at computers and typed in our answers. That was the way they did it in Abbey Street for full time permanent jobs. The temp jobs are probably done differently. Anyway I just wanted to say that I had actually gone through this process myself and that's where I got it from.

    Good luck!

so has anyone heard anything back yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 190 ✭✭skitzyspider

No, havent heard anything back yet..and when I rang them last week they said it would be this week! I rang again yesterday and they said it should be the last week in March or first week in April...typical civil service you get a different answer everytime you contact them:mad: Has anybody else tried ringing them??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,268 ✭✭✭Elessar

I rang them 20 mins ago, was told it will be in a week.

I just got an email from them there: I'm in the "Top Band" and may be called for interview. They will email me in a week.

    Sweet :D

Unemployed for 9 months and then I have three interviews in a week!

Hope the rest of you got good results!

    Hey all.

I got a reply today - I'm in the 'Top Band' for my area! They said I may be called for interview.

Anyone have any tips for the interview? My chances of getting through, and what they might ask?

    LOL - Well done Elessar!

    "Top Band" wahoo:D

If your on the "reserve band" there is still a chance you will get it...if anybody doesn't take it due to another job offer or anybody is sick etc you will be called. Sometimes a department will under estimate how may term-timers they will need and then they make up the diference from the reserve band. I have done it for the last 3yrs and the first year I got it I was on the reserve panel. Last year the section I was in was really busy so the boss asked for another term-timer and that girl came off the reserve panel....so best of luck!!

I agree. Last year, I thought I'd been too modest with my answers. Thought I won't make the same mistake twice, but obviously didn't tick excellent throughout. Still received the same letter now. Maybe next time just go for the excellent! :pac:

Congratulations to those who did get through!
