So, who's heading along to this? I'm booked in for 11:30 as I recall, and since I don't trust my own rifle until it's been well looked at, I'll be using a different one on the day. Not losing another first place to an equipment failure this time! :p

What's up with the rifle Dave?

Bolt was sticking, requiring gradually more force to open, though none to close. Stripped and cleaned it, blew air through it, all on a white sheet to see any grit or obstruction, but there was nothing. When I re-assembled the bolt first, I left out the guide tube for the cocking indicator, and the bolt seemed to function fine, and when I put it back in, it didn't. Essentially, I don't trust it at the moment until I get someone far more competent than myself to give it a good look over and see what the problem is. Got a DURC rifle for backup anyway, in my stock, so will get through this match fine, and once I've less work on my mind, I'll get my own looked at.

You should try make it down for this match by the way. Indoors on electronics is a tougher show than you'd think. Even FLOYDSTER hasn't quite managed a perfect score yet. ;)

    Thanks for the reminder IWM
Have also booked myself down for the 11:30 detail - Now all I need to do is make sure someone signs out the club rifle and kit for me!

I'm taking rifles to WTSC on saturday, and as much of the kit as I can think of. I've told Conor it'd be worth a poke around the range on sunday to make sure I've not missed anything obvious (If I'm packing at seven o'clock on saturday morning, which means getting up at five, you can bet I'm bloody well confused) but we should have the stuff anyway.

I once had an old 14xx that did something similar, IIRC I greased the parts in the bolt, after cleaning like you described. A heavy grease on the bolt handle where it slides on was the best solution for mine.

I'd have been free on Sunday and would have liked a trip down for that match, but have already now arranged a piss-up for Saturday night. Saturday night on the tiles = no shooting (or much of anything) on Sunday for me :o

Sure I'll toss it in the boot anyway and see whether anyone has any ideas. There's always the trusty DURC hammer in the tool box. I swear, that thing's done more rifle maintenance than any other bit of kit we have! :p

Yeah, Sparks doesn't require a hammer to break his rifle. :p

Results of the competition will be up on the Rathdrum website later tonight, however I just want to congratulate FLOYDSTER on setting two new Irish records today.

The first was a 597/600 in the match which although unconfirmed (we have to go back in the mists of time to check for sure) is most likely a new Irish indoor record.

His combined score of 701.4 most certainly is a new Irish record.

Bear in mind that the maximum possible combined score is 709.0: 600/600 plus 109/109.

    Phenomenal

    Well done FLOYDSTER!

Excellent shooting! (but I think Ray had a 598 a few years back before the megalinks showed up).
That 701.9 though, that's got to be the new record. Nicely done FLOYDSTER!

  • Subscribers Posts: 4,076 ✭✭✭IRLConor

Yep, it was an impressive piece of shooting. 99, 99, 99, 100, 100, 100. I've heard people being encouraged to "finish on a 10" but he finished with 3 tons! :)

There were 4 or 5 on 581 & 582 going into the final, but FLOYDSTER had a 15 point lead! He didn't sit back though, he pulled ahead further. I wouldn't be surprised if he has set a new record for the largest winning margin too!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

I was having target malfunction troubles at FLOYDSTER's halfway point. Came out and saw he was on 297/300. By the time I finished the match, he hadn't dropped any more points. Seriously nice to see.

Nope, Ray had a 595 back in September 1997. That record has remained until today.

The only thing we have to check is the old score books that predate the computerised record keeping that started in 1993.

Fingers crossed so, it's always nice to see the bar pushed up :)

Cheers Guys!!;), its always a lottery for me shooting indoors!, especially as I really dont like indoor shoots! lol

Yeah, it always seems like a better idea at the time.

Can you give us any insight into what was going through your head FLOYDSTER, or what do you put this fantastic performance down to??

    Just a little hint...

You're supposed to give him the poison, not eat it yourself.

    :D

Or let some cruel git sit behind you eating it while you lie there, half-starved and trying to hold the ten-ring... :D

Conor can pour one out into the box FLOYDSTER's lying on for the next match, see how he handles the distraction!

It's funny that the last time I did well in a match in rathdrum, that that's the abiding memory I have of shooting it - lying there freezing, starving and thinking "so help me, I'm getting through this card, and then I'm getting up and yelling at that evil *@#$%!@!!".... only to have him finish his dinner and wander off somewhere areound shot seven :D

LOL!!, the batch testing at Eley certainly didnt go amiss!!, the ammo I was using before had an average group size of 22mm so not so hot! and the small tweaks with my position last week!;)

Great shooting from Floydster; a cracking final from Conor too, under pressure. 2nd-5th was tight.

At rathdrum is the scoring, 50m scoring or 25yd? Obviously the range is 25yd, but you can hit poor 10s with 25yd scoring that won't be in the 10 at 50m. Just curious, as I've never shot there.

    Cheers.

The match was done on a 25yd NSRA scoring setup. The final was done (as an experiment) on a 50m diagram scaled to 25yd to allow proper tie-breaking. Obviously the aiming mark was the same, but the software and the firing point displays were essentially the same as 50m.

The reaction to this experiment was broadly positive so hopefully we'll see more of it. Changing from being a 25yd competition to being an "indoor, shorter 50m" is probably (IMO) a step in the right direction.

As Conor said, shooting the final on the 50m scaled down targets was a little different and well worth trying!;)

That was a cracking final!, always makes a great final when the scores are tight!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

I also liked the use of the 50m target representation. It's easier to relate to how you're shooting outdoors, and I'd love to see it adopted as a standard for the future, including qualification rounds. It worked very well indeed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 516 ✭✭✭FLOYDSTER

So how do the two differ in the scoreing if there is a difference?

What would be the most accurate ?

Definitely. Especially considering that my first two shots weren't good.

    Shot 1:
Me: 9.6! Damn, hopefully Joe doesn't pull too far ahead
    RO: Competitor no. 1: 10.7, Competitor no. 2: 9.6, Competitor no. 3: 10.2, Competitor no. 4: 10.2 ...
Me: Crap! Better pick up on the next one!
    ...
    Shot 2:
    Me: 9.7! I'm screwed now!
    RO: Competitor no. 1: 10.0, Competitor no. 2: 9.7, Competitor no. 3: 9.5, Competitor no. 4: 10.5 ...
Me: At least I scraped back a little against Joe, but now Dan is in the running!

After that, I started to pick up more points but I also lost track of the scores to my right. Once the RO called the last shot and said there were no ties I nearly knocked Joe over trying to peer at his screen to see where I had ended up! :o

I really enjoy finals. The pressure of a group of shooters all within less than a point or two is great for focussing the mind! They're also the only part of a match worth spectating at IMO. Unless someone's doing really well or really badly during the main part of the match it can be quite dull to watch.

At least you can now watch them ;)

As far as I can tell, there's no difference between the scaled down 50m target and the 25 yard target. I experimented a while back; shot 60 shots on the 25 yard target and printed out the results. Then I changed the target in the monitor to a 50m scaled down target and printed the results out again.

They were the exact same in every respect: a 10.4 was still a 10.4 etc.
