They've linked the mydit site to another page now, but still can't get in, its saying my login or password is incorrect. But 100% it is correct.

Anyone else getting in?

I had a meeting today about my dissertation, but due to the email system being down my supervisor didn't get an important email from me and so ultimately the meeting was pointless. Thank you DIT for messing up even the most basic of student facilities.

i believe the site "mydit.ie" is down but not the email server itself. You may still be able to access it by using an email client such as thunder bird or like myself just use gmail to grab it. I just got emails in about 5 mins ago

What are you and the SU doing about it Gareth?

I already talked to the people who managed it over an Aungier St today.
Just to clarify some of the problems:
First CS domain outage: Power cut over the weekend. It was on the ESB side and went down both kevin st and aungier. UPS kicked in and ran out. They rebooted when they came in.
Second CS outpage: Physical switch that served half the kevin st building blew (or something along those lines).

Mydit email: Database got corrupted. They switched the dns records to redirect to imap.dit.ie which is an alternative working version. The problem with it is that often systems cache dns settings beyond the time they're supposed to to speed up your browser. Because of that people weren't getting the updated mydit page. if you had simply went to "run" and typed in "ipconfig /flushdns" and tried http://mydit.ie again it would have worked. Even typing in http://imap.dit.ie without flushing the dns would have also worked.

The only thing on mydit that went down was the web client that people use. If you use a 3rd party client such as thunderbird or outlook or even set up gmail to grab them it still works.

If this happens in the future a very nice alternative online client to use is Http://mail2web.com/

The situation is being assessed by top men!
"Who???"
...top men!
Cue clip of man wheeling large wooden crate into unfathomably large warehouse!

We should get a DIT boards.ie slogan along the lines of "bringing you the important news first!" or something :)

Down again, we should have this thread stickied

how difficult is it to maintain an email server ??

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,480 ✭✭✭projectmayhem

Funnily, I was given an early invite to threadsy (blog post in link) which ties up all your email and social media accounts in one web app. The only email system I could get to work was DIT.

Good game, DIT.

tbh, i dnt think there's much he can do apart from lobby DIT... myDIT is a service provided by DIT, not DITSU

He had better get lobbying, or doing all he can in this regard.

Didnt think you could set up dit mail in thunderbird or outlook, can it be done?

The whole system is a joke. It should be linked into webcourses, student intranet to create a propper system where you can get lecture notes etc.

Anyone notice the whole internet go down today? Maybe it was only Aungier St. but it seriously cramped my style since the only reason I came in to college was to work on an online project.

DIT is a joke, Its a miracle for all their systems to be working anyday,, They are a "institute of technology" and yet cant even make a wireless network work properly, not only that, I love the new kevin street computer labs rule, you cant use a usb key in case you infect the network with a virus :rolleyes:, Really irritates me, I just bring my netbook in, plug it in to a ethernet cable ( dont care if they dont "allow" it) and use the network that way, if you need to do any work that is only online based you may aswell stay at home, dits network is constantly going down, such a joke of an institution

Hi Lads,

Could you give me the info on how to setp a client to get the email off DIT

Like Smtp or IMAP and settings for this :)

Thanks

• Closed Accounts Posts: 2,696 ✭✭✭mark renton

https://imap.dit.ie/

if it is for college email you can set up a forwarding rule so when email is sent to @dit.ie you can receive it to gmail etc
