Butt loads of partying happening on campus today, according to my Facebook social calendar.

At 7pm in Theatre 1 Arts Block, there's a Labour Youth talk with Councillor Patrick McNulty on running a successful campaign.

Across the road at 7, in JH 7, the LGBT XMas party is on, while in JH6 Lit and Deb are having their room 101/Christmas party.

If that's not enough drink for you, at 8.30 Labour NUIM are having their christmas and end of year party in the SU bar.

Labour will be having their Christmas shindig in a bunker next year ;)

The SWP: misidentifying the class enemies in Ireland since 1971...

    :P

In fact we're the only party on the left looking to include you guys. Try calling the SP headquarters and saying the words labour to them. They have a button they can press that kills you instantly :D

"we're the only party on the left looking to include you guys"

haha, funny. Yes, I've experienced some attempts to 'include me' by a certain member of the SWP before. It involved raised voices and a finger being wagged at me, as though I was a dumb and disobedient child. Effectively calling Labour members gob****es is probably not the most effective strategy either. So forgive me if I'm a little skeptical.

However, I am not a member of Labour, or Labour Youth. Yet. Keep pushing though :D

If you look at the recent Right To Work march on the Dail (organised by SWP) we had Dermot Looney (Lab councillor in Dub South) down to speak, he couldn't speak but a chap from Labour Youth replaced him. One of the main arguments during the talks preceeding the formation of the ULA was the Socialist Party's insistence that we exclude the Labour Party. The SWP's official position on the Labour Party is that there are people and factions within the Labour Party that we can definitely work with. No broad movement on the left can exclude Labour.

Obviously on an individual level there are sectarian attitudes within the SWP towards Labour but it's definitely only a minority view. To ignore Labour's roots in the trade unions would be suicide for the left. The SP like killing themselves though :)

Any balls going on this year ? masquerade ball or anything ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭manna

The theology ball was supposed to be on in December, but was postponed due to the weather. That should be on sometime in February or March.

(You don't have to study theology to go)

Save the debate on SWP/SP differences for a politics thread lads.

Cool. Any other balls aswell e.g. Economics ball. At nuig there's one.

    Who organizes the balls.

It depends on which one it is. The theology ball is organised by the SU's St. Pat's rep. The Irish and Law balls are usually organised by the respective societies. The Science ball was organised by the Clubs and/or Socs officers for the last few years, but they happened to be science students themselves as well.

I don't think there's an economics ball, but you'd have to check with MEFsoc (Maynooth economics and finance -if they still exist) they might hold one...

So when is Raise and Give/Charity week this year and anything confirmed for it yet? I heard that the Gathering is a seperate event at the end of April now. Is this true?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 489 ✭✭JellyBeans92

I dunno about raise and give week, but the diaries we got at orientation this year said the Gathering was the 29th of April.

What is The Gathering anyway, do we have to go and do we have to pay for it :)

The Gathering is a mini-festival thing. Tickets were 35 euro last year iirc. You don't have to go, its just something the SU puts on.

29th April's a Friday, that's a bit of an odd day for it seeing as people will generally be heading home for the weekend :/ Also there's a 3rd year English exam that day, so I'll defo not be going :P

Lectures were cancelled for it last year, so there's a chance that this year would be the same.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,757 ✭✭✭cython

Not technically on campus, but I hope nobody minds too much if I point out that there's a blood donation clinic on in the Glenroyal today (bit late, I know!) and tomorrow from 5pm-8:30pm, if anyone is interested in donating.

Lectures should be off in the afternoon for it.
