28-02-2010 12:36am#1Just wondering, putting aside todays lil wayne and co., what is the best peice of classical/custom music for a film. my vote would be on The Lord of the rings: The Shire.
not a fanatic of the movie, but this peice i think is lovely. second choice for me would be the score from "Shawshank Redemption", when Andy Dufrasne puts on the italian peice in the wardens office

Howard Hanson's Symphony No2 "Romantic" is used perfectly over the end credits of Alien.

Jonny Greenwood's score to There Will Be Blood was amazing.
Bernard Herrmann was the first king of film composers, though, and did a ton of work with Hitchcock. The score to Vertigo was all about obsession that felt like love:
And for an Italian who doesn't speak English, Ennio Morricone managed to evoke the American west extremely well. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly was the first film soundtrack to reach number one in the charts. (The famous opening is supposed to evoke coyotes.)

D'you know he got sued by the Gustav Holst estate for this soundtrack for (rather blatantly) ripping off Mars: The Bringer of War from Holst's Planets suite?
Anyways, a couple more contributions: Kenji Kawai's opening for the anime Ghost in the Shell fused influences from Japanese and Bulgarian traditional to make this weird, wide-open soundscape that fuses perfectly with the animation of the opening (which isn't in this video, but the piece stands well on its own too).
Don Davis' opening titles set up the world of The Matrix very nicely. One of the few defensible points of the sequels was the soundtracks - Davis increased the pitch of that trumpet chord in each film, to ratchet up the tension, and by the third film it's really screamed out. And I really wish I'd come up with those scurrying strings first.
And one more Herrmann: The whole score of Psycho was written for just string orchestra, and built on a single (iirc four-note) chord. Impressive.

Craig Armstrong's Balcony Scene from Romeo & Juliet, stunning.
Dario Marinelli's Elegy For Dunkirik from Atonement, equally stunning. Fantastic scene too.
John Williams' Jurassic Park Theme. Takes me right back to being a kid in awe of cinema for the first time.
