Too much veg = Bad or not?

    Hi everyone.

I was a crap eater up to a while ago. The usual, loads of pasta with fatty sauces and plenty of parmesan. Big sambo with egg mayo and cheese at lunch. Muffin for breakfast when I got to work. You know the drill. Put on a few.... eh pounds last year, enough to make me want to button my jeans again!

Anyway over the last few weeks, (it was the start of Lent.. ahem, even though not holy, it was the trigger) I decided to try and eat in a bit more balanced way.

So I have wholemeal bread for brek, tuna, chicken on wh/m bread at lunch, and either poached chicken, homemade burger, or poached salmon for dinner. But I have such a huge plate with loaaaads of veg. Broccoli, cauli, carrots, tomatoes, and marrowfat peas. I am stuffed after it. I really love the marrowfats so they must be bad.....ha.

Just wondered are too many vegetables OK? I am not a fruit lover, only a banana or peaches and strawbs/raspbs in season.

I find I have a lot of eh.... wind. From the veg I'd say.

But I have lost a bit of flab around my middle where it sticks.

I have two glasses of red wine every night also. Will not give that up, sorry. Have the occasional treat at the weekends, be it roast spuds in olive oil spray, a bit of my beloved pasta, or a slice off the big take away pizza that arrives here on Sunday nights!

I am no saint, but am finding it tough coping with the wind. Anyone know what to do about this? It can be very unpleasant not only for me but for those around me. I blame the broccolli!!

    Best of luck to everyone.

To be honest, I'd find it hard to eat too much veg. The minimum recommendation is five portions a day (and most of those should be veg) and nine is better.

The only time you should be concerned is if you are eating veg to the exclusion of all else, and losing out on protein and fat as a result.

    Thanks Eileen,

But what can I do about the WIND as result of all the veg please...... It is putting me off (and others in the house too) even though I enjoy eating it. The after effects are not pleasant. Especially if I have a treat of asparagus.

Does the wind factor reduce over time as your system gets used to it? tks

BTW I am passing wind not burping it . Trying to be polite here folks.

I assume you get used to it. To be honest, I never fart, unless I eat something with a lot of sugar alcohols or refined carbs.

How do you know its not the alcohol? Or the bread? Much more likely imo to be causing the problem unless you have an allergy to one of the vegetables you listed.

This is not scientific and can't remember exactly where I was told it but was told that if you are upping the roughage in your diet (veg) your bowels will take time to get used to the increased fibre in your diet!! Also raw veg is harder to digest than cooked!!! (what I have been told but have no science to back it up)

It does yeah. :) I tend to go through cycles in my diet because of training and it usually takes me 1-2 weeks to adjust to a high veg / high fibre diet. Peppermint tea is supposed to help. I drink it when I'm particularly pungent. :D

edit: Some things cause it more than others. Those peas are a likely candidate.

For years now my diet has consisted of a lot of fruit and veg and I must admit that this particularly problem hasn't gotten any better!!(I live with my boyfriend and it drives him crazy!) Though the severity depends on what fruit and veg I've eaten and fruit seems to be the biggest contributor so it could be a good thing you're not eating too much of that.

Apparently ideally we should all be eating at least 11 pieces of F&V a day but because the government or whoever outlines these things didn't believe people would consume that much so left it at the more achieveable 5 a day.

It definitely would be a good idea to vary the veg you eat every day.Aldi do great fruit and veg offers every week so what they have on offer one week often dictates my meals.

You can light matches at my rear end all you like. Nothing will happen.

LMAO at this thread, sorry OP!

A little wind is normal, though like Eileen I don't seem to have that problem. Must be a low carb thing..*high five*:D

If it smells bad though that is a sign that all is not well in the GI tract. Do you have any other gastric symptoms?

I'd cut out the bread and peas for two days and I bet you a tenner no more wind. Legumes and wheat are one of the worst offenders for IBS in my experience. I would really doubt it's the tomatoes or brocolli.
