God of War III

First off, the demo is now available from the EU PlayStation Store for everyone to download.

I think it's time for us to have a GOW III dedictated thread to discuss the demo and our anticipation for the game which is out in 3 weeks time.

I know a lot of people are playing the God of War collection right now and so a lot of you will likely have played the demo that was released for everyone today. However I'm sure the majority of people haven't played the demo, so what do you think of it?

Note that the demo is from something like a years old build so it is possible the retail version looks even better (if that were somehow possible :pac:).

Honestly? I have far too much other stuff to play to care. Getting that new Valkyria Chronicles DLC is on my list of priorities.

Haven't even opend the GOW collection yet.

    Its all too mcuh people!

Dude, you've played the demo right? How can you not be anticipating... that?

You've played the God of War games before though so I can understand you not playing the GOW collection yet, but you're not excited one bit for GOW III? You crazy!

I was going to start a demo thread but they always end up turning into the game dedicated thread anyway so I made an all purpose thread. :pac: I'm sure a lot of people haven't played the demo yet.

But yeah I'll be getting the new Valkyria Chronicles DLC as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭L31mr0d

I will not be getting the Valkyria Chronicles DLC. Not ever.

So I'm free to play GoWIII :D

I played the GoWIII demo after completing GoWI for the first time (hadn't played it before getting the collection) and it utterly confused the hell out of me.

Then after completing GoWII it all made sense. They completely flip the story on it's head in GoWII.

Can't wait to see what the opening intro of GoWIII is going to be to resolve how GoWII ended.

No crying, just pure unadulterated rage.

And if you can't be like that with DS then what game can you be like that with?

Valkyria Chronicles and having to use that awful menu system and all those XP paperclips characters that pop every time you try to enter one of them. ;)

"Zeus, your son has returned, I bring the destruction of Olympus"

    Bring. It. On.

Kratos has to be one the best game characters ever. He makes the Prince of Persia look like an emo loser.

btw, did anyone else unlock the easter egg in GoWII that displays this quote across the sky:

"Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds"

I played the demo, having never played any of the God of War games previously, and I thought that it was quite good. Nothing more!

Then I completed GOWI and now I fully understand the excitement surrounding GOWIII. I don't think that the demo has shown the uninitiated how potentially brilliant the new game is going to be- I feel that it might have sold it a bit short. Now to try to find some time to play the second game!

I finished the GoW III demo tonight and wasn't really that impressed. It is the first time I have ever played a GoW game. I missed out on the first two on the PS2.

I thought the graphics were impressive, especially the scale of the level. I just found the gameplay a little simple. I suppose I just don't enjoy these type of games. I was hoping that GoW III would change my mind but I guess not.

I have to admit, I was kind of of the same mind, I thought the demo was fun and looked gorgeous, but didn't really get that special feeling about it. But damn, when I actually played the GOW collection and I went from GOWII to GOWIII, it's amazing. They really up the ante in atmosphere, combat, gore, the scale - just incredible. I can't wait for this game! Hence the thread. :pac: I like how the demo ends as well, all I was thinking was 'Whoa! WTF!'.

I'm pretty sure that could be my review of the GOWIII demo "Whoa!...WTF!". They've certainly set a new standard for the use of the word 'epic' and it's application to this sort of a game.

Josey Wales, my point is don't judge the game on this demo. If GOWI is anything to go by (which I'd imagine it is, though I've heard the second game is even better) the third game will be substantially deeper than the relatively short demo. Get the GOW Collection, I guarantee that you will be sold!

As hard as it is to believe, GoWII is better than the first in EVERY way. They improved everything, the combat, the weapons, the graphics, the scale, the epicness.

What's striking about the GoW series is the narrative, it tells an actually interesting and deep story which is something that took me by surprise.

This is the Penny Arcade strip from when GoWII was released :D

    Heh love that cartoon.

Alot of Gow is about the story, anyone who has not played 1 or 2, i highly advise, i implore you pick up the first 2 and play them. Its the perfect example of how to blend, gameplay, story and characters into a top top game.

    and i can't bloody wait for GOw3.

Gotta agree with this post. I just picked up the collection there a couple of weeks ago and finally made time to start playing it this week. I'm ploughing through the 1st at the moment and its certainly epic. Thats the one word I most feel when playing it. Combat is good as well, nice and fast. Great game so far and cant wait to get into 2, then 3!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,317 ✭✭✭CombatCow

Yeah playing them back to back is incredible, I got the collection a while ago and wanted to play them through before III came out. Needless to say I cant wait!

I thought what I played of the demo was fantastic, if you didn't like it, you should definitely avoid buying it.

I thought the demo was a little rough around the edges, but it's from E3 '09, so I imagine the final product will be much more polished.

I'm still on GoW 1 on the collection. Only picked up the collection this week. Play 1 when it came out, have yet to play 2 though. Playing through Chains of Olympus on the PSP too.

Played the demo, damn it was impressive, really gorgeous looking, especially straight after playing the originals, which still look pretty good.

The GameTrailers preview footage is absolutely incredible (warning: might be spoiler-ish for some!). It looks better than GoWII CG
    First person 'victim cam'
    is ridiculous :pac:

PS3 is on fire lately. I wish I could go back a few years and show myself these games.

GOW2 is better than the first game in everyway except in story. GOW2 has no storyline. GoW had a reason for kratos to be so full of rage. GoW2's story is basically Kratos is bored so decides to fuck shit up then the gods get annoyed at him and he decides he's still angry so sets out to fuck them up.

He's totally one dimensional in the second game. His only character trait is RAGE!!!!! and he is angry for no reason. He's basically a spoiled child.

Saying that I can't wait to fuck shit up with Kratos.

Also there's no facepalm.jpg good enough for people that don't like Valkyria Chronicles :P

I thought the story in the second one was better than the first. He's as angry in the second one as he was in the first (the reason behind Ares admiration for him, he wasn't exactly picking daisies when Ares came to his aid), only now he has the power of a God.

The first one gave us the back story but didn't really move his character forward that much. In the first he was mainly concerned with vengeance against Ares for what he had made him do.

In the second we learn of Kratos' true origin, and his journey to get vengeance against Zeus for his betrayal. It also ties in a lot more Greek mythology than the first and resolves the questions over the fate of the Titans that was left open.

How you can say it isn't as good as the first is baffling , I would of thought your bar would be pretty low also as you'd have the story in Valkyria Chronicles for comparison :pac:

I'm one of those crazy people who never even played the first one. So, after getting excited by GoW III I've literally just picked up the first. I'll be sure to get through that and GoW II before I get to this!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,408 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Kratos had a good reason to be looking for vengeance against Ares.

The second game is basically zeus kills kratos for no reason other than he is acting the twat and then kratos decides he wants to get back at him by acting the even bigger twat. That's basically it. Kratos may have been a full of rage in the first one but it was understandable and there was a human side to him. In the second game all he is is a screaming ball of anger and rage and I felt absolutely no connect with the character and was actually laughing a lot at how stupid and over the top he was.

Still it's the only area I found GoW2 floundered against the original because in everything else it was bigger, better and more and had a load of great bosses this time instead of the lack of them in the first game.

Go back to playing X-Blades :P

Are you saying he doesn't have a good reason for looking for vengeance in GoWII?

Oh and nice to see you've dropped Legendary :P But I think you have proven a point, I play a lot games from the worst to the best, my tastes are pretty varied and I can usually play just about anything. What does that say about the fact that I don't like Valkyria Chronicles :pac: (to be fair it wasn't as bad as X-Blades, I'd rate it somewhere just above Golden Axe: Beast Rider ;))

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,408 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Well he does have a reason but the storyline just felt like an excuse to get kratos back killing things again. Everything was wrapped up at the end of GoW2. I think the problem is Zeus' reason for killing him is not exactly fleshed out and to give zeus a reason they had to change Kratos' character. In GoW 2 he isn't likeable at all, he's a psychopath and a total bellend and that's basically Zeus's only reasoning, Kratos is a bit of a jock dickhead. I've no problems with the game but to say it has a good story and that kratos is a good character in the second game (because he's very different in the first game) is really pushing it.

Well I think GoWI suffered the same dilemma as the Matrix. If it had bombed I doubt a second one would of been green lighted so they had to end it with some form of finality (in the same way they nuked the fridge with Neo at the end of the first Matrix)

I don't think Kratos has ever changed, he's always been an antihero. He didn't suddenly take on some higher intelligence when he received the power of a God, he just went back to the person he was before joining Ares, a war monger, only now he's a God.

Initially we are led to believe that Zeus killed him to stop his rampage, but we learn that his true motives are fear that he will become powerful enough to usurp his position, due to being his Son.

I don't know, I found it to be a much more fleshed out plot. I've had a personal interest in Greek mythology and found the second installment was able to weave a lot more of the myths from that time into the Kratos story. The first feels narrow in its development of the setting of the game.

It could also be the reason why you play as Ryu and I play as Akuma in SFIV :pac:, you want to see the good in Kratos, and there was little of it in GoWII, I want to see the evil and power in him spread which is why I liked how he progressed in the second game ;)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,408 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I have to agree with you that there was a lot more greek mythology referenced in GoW2 than in GoW1. The first game certainly felt a little rushed what with the lack of bosses as well and not a lot of different enemies. From the documentaries there was certainly a lot left on the cutting room floor so to speak. GoW 2 definitely felt like more of a complete package. GoW certainly came out of nowhere as well. I still remember the previews talking about how there was too much reliance on QTE's and making the game feel average a month before it comes out followed by a 96 from IGN I think and a slew of other great reviews. I preordered my US copy shortly afterwards :D

I think we should just agree to disagree. I think we can both agree that both games kick ass and that GoW 2 is the better game.

As for Ryu, well it's more that I used him since SF2 but I'm beginning to regret it since I'm useless at combos and he relies on them a lot!

The only experience I have with GoW is the Chains of Olympus on PSP. I have never enjoyed another game on PSP as much as I did Chains of Olympus. I was totally hooked and attracted many strange looks in various public transport for clutching the PSP too hard and intense button bashing..!! I will most certainly buy the GoW III when it comes out!!

You should definitely consider getting the GOWI/GOWII collection first and completing them before the 19th :). Worth every penny. I had only played a small portion of the first one back in my PS2 days but awhile ago got the collection for the PS3 and went through both games in a week - they hold up very well to the current generation (though don't look at the demo of GOWIII first, as even the upscaled versions of the two previous ones look terrible by comparison then :D).

Indeed, plus any game where you get to batter the sh1te out of Harry Hamlin has got to be worth playing, the only section in GOWII I wasnt crazy about was the
Pegasus flying section to get to the island, it was a bit too long
other than that though its still an immense game, and the sense of scale and epicness puts most of the current gen stuff to shame, I couldnt get over how amazing the journey across the chains to the island looked, the way the camera just pulled back and kept going as Kratos gets smaller and smaller but you still control him was jawdropping
