    Nothing. It's basically wallpaper paste with flavouring. It will keep pretty much forever without going off. Or without supplying any nutrition at all. I'd hesitate to classify it as food.

    "best before" means just that, it is at its best before that date. "use by" is a different story.

    e.g. tins of beans might have a best before 4 years away, it doesnt become toxic at the stroke of midnight in 4 years time. These dates are based on worst case scenarios, stuff in hot windows of shops for months. I never saw BB dates on tins when I was growing up, they are sterile and the dates are really a marketing thing, forcing turnover of stock. It also stops retailers stocking up when offers are on, and then having old labelled cans on shelves years later, with old logos and faded tatty labels.
