Just wondering if anyone is aware of any negative effects coffee had on protein absorption? Say is it bad to have a protein shake at 9am and coffee at 9:30am?

    Thanks

i read a couple of articles about this awhile ago and my recollection is a bit hazy but i think the main point was that caffeine increased the degradation of protein meaning that less was available for absorption when it reached the cells.

If you have a coffee with milk will the extra protein help (coz the extra kcal don't)?

(says the man who lives on coffee)

I reckon it's an entirely minor point when compared with the rest of the normal person's diet.

Hey Transform, mind me asking why you consider lattes to be so bad?

I'm guessing it's the hidden calories.

So that includes soya lattes? :(

no hidden calories at all as they are plain to see and yes even the soy ones - total muck and you would be better off drinking an americano/espresso or a glass of milk if you want it.

Once every month fine but a latte a day will make give you a big barse and ned kelly.

ah jaysus not this again. the packaged latte's like maxwell house etc do contain a fair bit of sugar and therefore calories. but a basic latte is coffee and frothed milk. I have a machine at home that makes them and in fairness some good quality ground coffee and a bt of milk is not going to kill anyone

Interesting. Do you mind expanding on 'total muck'? Genuinely curious as I have about 3 or 4 a week. What's the benefits of an americano over a latte?

less calories really and I personally do not know anyone who is in good shape that drinks them regualrly but hey many of my friends are quite into their training.

And corkcomp as i said one a month - fine, one ever day or other day -no.

Why - well if you are not counting that latte its likely you are not counting the muffin and then the small choc bar later (sher its only a tiny thing)

    Small things matter

I still think there is nothing wrong with a latte per day if its basically expresso with hot milk. that doesnt mean muffins are ok (ever, if trying to lose weight) or packaged lattes. Transform, I see where you are coming from - plenty posts saying they have healthy diet and only go on beer once a week and only one take away per week and only one barwith their coffee etc and i agree, however latte alone are not a problem imo

Hey don't demonise coffee, especially not lattes! I love my lattes!

The problem is that people (who imo have no idea what real coffee is) tend to add sugar - one, two, maybe three packets - to their coffee and wolf down a muffin/doughnut etc with it. Or else as mentioned they go for the packaged 'coffee' out of packets which is essentially coffee flavoured sugar.

Stick with a real latte/cappuccino etc - a shot of espresso with milk.

I agree with all of that especially people who have no idea what good coffee means - i get mine from hassbean and square mile in the uk but always espresso or americano.

If your latte is your small something every day then fine (mine is dark choc) but not if its part of a whole range of mistakes done daily

I used t have a latte every day until i discovered a properly brewed americano. hmmmmmmmmmmmm. i don't see why they should be put down though if you count the milk as part of your intake. its a glass of steamed milk and espresso. no different if you were to go off and have a glass of milk and espresso seperatly.

the problem arises if you have countless amounts of them or if you are not adding the milk as part of your daily intake.

Re: the OP. If a lot of your protein comes from dairy caffeine might be a slight problem because afaik, caffenine inhibits calcium absorption so it might affect how the body consequently absorbs and effectively uses the protein. Im not sure though. Just throwing it out there. if not and your protein comes from a variety of sources i wouldnt really worry.
