Trying To Lose 2-3 Stone

    Hi all,

First post on this forum so take it easy :D

Anyway, I'm 18, 6 Ft 2" and overweight at near 16 stone. I used to be mad into playing sports until a couple of years ago when I got completely sick of the dedication and ended up piling on the weight.

Now after numerous honest comments about my weight gain from friends and family, I've decided I really need to change things. I'm looking at losing 2-3 stone.

It's obvious that I need to adjust my diet, but the thing is I absolutely dispise foods like salad and vegtables. I've tried to adjust to them previously, but I just can't stomach them at all, I gag at the taste. I also have a huge problem with eating at night time. I'm in college all day and when I come home I still actually feel hungry after dinner and end up eating rubbish at around 9pm.

My diet at present during a college week consists of:

Breakfast at 7am: Bowl of cereal.

Lunch at 12pm: A sandwich, a packet of crisps and a small mini bar of chocolate. 500ml bottle of diet mineral.

Dinner at 6pm: Usually healty, i.e 3 scoops of potatoes, chicken or roast beef. (I have one day a week of fast food for dinner)

Snack before bed at 8/9pm: A few biscuits, slices of bread etc.

I know I could try and cut out the snack before bed but some days I'd be so hungry I'd just have to give in.

I do have a gym membership, and could get in at least once a week, but generally I'm wrecked after travelling up to college and back during the day and like I said previously, my dedication is very suspect, that will have to change though.

I don't want to turn my fat to muscle or owt, I just want to lose the weight and become somewhat thin again.

I really need some advice and would try anything at this stage to be honest, so I'd be open to any advice and it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks all.

Dude, your diet is shocking - i've lost about 3.5 stone in a few months following this diet & training programme.

    http://neilmct.com/neilmct-diet-plan.php

More importantly, i;ve lost nearly 10 inches off my waist. I was 39.5 inches on my waist, now im 30

While there are many ways to skin the proverbial cat, i found a diet that actually work for me.

My training has moved on lots - but my diet is still sticking roughly to these principles. its so easy to get swamped with information on the internet - this book is a great, no bull****, plan to lose weight.

Other then that, read the stickeys on this site, but even they have conflicting information..

Good luck & all the best

being honest with ya ok first and foremost your post is a litany of excuses IMHO. eg you cant salad and veg, you are wrecked tired after college, you can make gym once a week......seriously before any advice i think personally you gotta actually decidr yourself are you willing to cut out what is needed to drop the weight!!it seems like you looking for peopleto say you can ikinda keep doign what you being doing and it will work out. it wont. might sound harsh here but its so important to be mentally right.

one of the reasons why you're so tried after college is your poor diet and exercise plan, once you get on the right track food and exercise-wise you'll have more energy and feel less like crap.

But BlueIsland is 100% right, its as much mental as anything. The first month of trying to change is the hardest, if you;'re mentally prepared you'll find it easier.

Gym in college during day ? Surely you could fit in even 20minute workout at home several times a week? Your diet is bad, more meat, eggs, fish, complex carbs, healthy fats, take a multivitamin if your really cant stand fruit/veg but im sure if you tried lots of fruit and veg prepared in many differnet ways you'd like some. Do you eat pizza? (contains tomatoes) potatoes which you eat are a vegtable.
As above said you are making excuses. You are tired in evening because you are leading a sedentary lifestyle and generally in poor health. Two or three full body weights workouts a week will transform your body IF and only if you change diet. Fat wont change to musscle but gaining SOME muscle will make it easier for you to stay in shape.
You could just reduce the amount of calories you eat but still be eating the same kind of junk but you just end up being a "skinny fat person" who is flabby yet skinny and generally unhealthy and making future health probs inevitable.

what he said. and read the stickies too.. if you were hoping to find anyone to tell you that diet is good you could have a long wait man

Who's cooking your vegetables? It's true that dry carrots and parsnips sitting on a plate next to dry mashed potatoes are not that tasty. I used to gag on them as a kid too. Sounds to me like you could do with spicing up your food. To my mind, there's little tastier than a spicy stir fry (no meat), liberally coated in soy sauce and some cajun seasoning, or roasted parsnips with garlic.

But as everyone has said, you've got to accept lifestyle changes to lose weight. Your lifestyle got you to where you are now, and it's foolish to think you can lose that weight without changing that lifestyle. No chocolate, no crisps, no processed junk food; snacks should be fruit not bread, etc., and regular exercise 3-4 times a week. Eat less, eat no junk, and exercise - there is no diet in the world that disagrees with this.

But you already know all this...

Thanks for all the advice lads. I know some of it may sound harsh, but to be honest, it's what I need to hear. Like you've been saying, I know in my own mind that I've been making excuses but it's at a stage now where the excuses need to stop.

Ideally, I'd like to drop to a 32 waist from a 36, that's my aim. I'm guessing as I'll have something to aim for that will make it easier for me in the long run.

I'm going to go to the gym whenever possible, I'm lucky in that a couple of my friends go every second night and that they've been on at me to go whenever they go, for around the last month.

I know my diet is appaling, and I've been told that bread is one of the worst things I could be eating? What would you propose I consume for lunch instead of sandwiches? To be honest, is it actually possible for a man of my height and size to function off just a small bowl of cereal, a small lunch and a bowl of veg or something like that for dinner? If that's what needs to be done though, I'll do it.

Also, I have a question about diet drinks such as diet coke, diet orange etc. Are these actually any healthier than their normal counterparts? I've been told they're grand to drink, as there isn't any sugar, and very little calories in them (According to the ingrediants on the bottle at least) but is this just a myth?

if you want to do it the easiest way possible cut out all the junk food and only eat decent non processed food and only drink water(i bet you have a load of fizzy drinks in your diet that you didnt put up

then run 4 nights a week getting progressively longer each night as you will probably only get around the block the first few nights

thats what i did and i lost 2 stone in a little over 2 months

if you want to actually get healthy and lose the weight in a sustainable way read the stickies fix your diet properly and do hiit cardio as well as weights

on average it takes 3 weeks to get into the habit of something(getting up earlier, going to the gym, actually putting effort into cooking) so in theory if you put in the hard slog for 3 weeks it will get much easier after that

forcing yourself to do excersise will sort out your lack of energy problem, if your dedicated to colelge and make every lecture then create a timetable for excersising and college and consider your workouts as important and always go at the time specified(this has helped me alot)

those are just some rambling thoughts from me as a relative novice aswell but diet is the most important thing for you to change it shouldnt be too hard when you take into account the fact you WILL DIE far earlier with that diet if you keep it up compared to someone who fixes it right now

didnt read this before i replied

just because something is low in calories dosnt mean its healthy

john berardi recomends not drinking anything with more than 0 calories ie water most of the time

wholeweat bread is fine but it is best to keep the carb count low accept for just after excersise

eat smaller portions but more often so anywhere from 5 - 9meals a day(meals include protein shakes etc if you decide to go down that route) this way even though you might get hungry you know your next meal isnt far away

cereal isnt the only breakfast out there you can have eggs / chicken or turkey sausages lean protein with every meal is important

its no myth they dont contain suggar and generally have much less calories. However, they do contain artificial sweeteners which can be bad for your health. Also, because of the sweet taste, your body expects calories from the drink, and when it doesnt get them it makes you crave food to get the calories

Now I have to say, im a diet drink drinker, but I only have it with food. I just like the taste of it when im eating. Move to water for thirst instead of just buying a bottle of diet whatever. I find fizzy water helps too, goves you the sensation of drinking a fizzy drink but without the calories.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as the OP, looking to cut the weight but just can't motivate myself to get up off my arse and do something about it. I eat incredibly unhealthily but the fact is I can't cook and don't really have much options ( well I probably do but I don't know about them).

Thinking of joining total fitness in Clare hall but can someone give me a generic fat cutting diet plan?

You need to start learning how to cook and how to prepare your own meals. Otherwise you're left with take aways and processed foods. There are no healthy options when it comes to pre-packaged foods - None.

Cooking gets easier the more of it you do, and it's a great skill to have. Start by baking a potato. It doesn't get much easier than that.

    Read the stickies.

One thing to bear in mind.

Fat in diet is not a bad thing.Too much of it is.(Like anything else)

Calories is what you want to know and find out your BMR(google it)

If you want to loose weight. You have to educate yourself on food.
Joining gyms means nothing if you dont have your diet in order.

cooking 100% healthy food is not hard at all

it is entirely possible to cook all 6 healthy meals for the next day in one hour

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,129 ✭✭✭therokerroar

Cheers for all the advice so far lads. I have tomorrow's food all prepared, well in my head at least :D

    Breakfast: Weetabix

    Lunch: Tuna Sandwich

    Snack: An Orange/Grapes

    Dinner: Chicken and Potatoes

I'll also be purchasing a Hi-Vis jacket and going for a jog around the block (1.5-2 miles) every second day. I'll probably have to stop for breath twice on the way around though, frightening considering three years ago I used to run the same block twice a day (afternoon/evening) without needing to stop once.

The tough and long road starts here

sorry for hijacking the thread but i'm also looking to lose some weight i'm 5"9 and i weigh 13 and a half stone i'm a gym member and i go for an hour hour and a half 4 times a week
    my diet is
breakfast: bowl of cereal or beans on toast or scrambled egg depending on my mood with a mug of tea
lunch:2 chicken salad sandwhiches have a bannana as well
dinner:meat veg and spuds or chicken curry
my problem is snacks i always get a euro mix of sweets downtown during school i have about 4 big mugs of tea 1 or 2 bags of crisps biscuits etc
i was just wondering about gym routines i want to lose a few stone before i build muscle so i was wondering should i stay away from the weights and machines for a while and stick to the treadmill and bikes
what i usually do is a 10-15 min jog on treadmill spend an hour on the various machines and finish up with another jog
i've only been going a week and a bit so no big changes yet
my goal is to be thin for the debs

    Read the stickies.

There is no harm whatsoever in doing weights as part of a weight loss routine.

Short version. Muscle eats more calories then fat. If you build more muscle you burn more calories every day.

If you loose more then 2lbs(approx. Varies person to person) a week then you are riskinig loosing muscle as well.

All the work in the gym is being undone by the sweets btw. More important to get the diet right then the exercise.(imho)

Cutting back is great. Rule of thumb is that if you are doing the right thing 90% of the time then falling off the wagon 10% of the time is ok.
(But you really have to be doing the 90% right though).

Do you put sugar in the tea? Try and cut it down if you do. Sugar would be the biggest problem

If you dont take sugar in the tea then no major problem with it at all.

Never mind the tea, it's the sweets and the crisps you need to cut out. You could also try cutting out one of the sandwiches at lunch time and having an apple instead. For evening meals, start with using a smaller plate, and no going back for seconds.

Big changes in one go are hard, but small changes can have an effect too. The best single change I made was using a smaller plate for my main meal and nibbling on fruit between meals.

because of how bad my diet was before this diet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 384 ✭✭connollys

Most of what I would recommend has already been said here. Cut down on the carbs in the evenings especially.
I found keeping a food diary very helpful. Be 100% honest and keep note of everything you eat. Personally I found it helpful to do this as when I thought of snacking on something junky Id think of having to put it on my food diary and then been disgusted looking at it there anytime I went into the diary. Maybe that was just me though.
Personally I done it in Excel. On another worksheet I had actual v expected weight loss. Had my current weight and then deducted 1lb a week as a goal. Once a week I would weigh meself and enter the figure in actual column. This was handy as there were good and bad weeks but still kept me focused on my overall goal and where I was in relation to achieving it.

    Just to update:

I've had a chest infection for the last two days, so eating has been minimal.

    Since Monday, I've had:

    A Bowl of Weetabix

    A Tuna Sandwich

    A Banana

Two eggs with two slices of toast.
