Is it a tribalistic thing? a social bonding thing? are we just completely brain washed or what?

I mean in this day and age and after all the child abuse scandals, i can't understand how anyone could stomach going to mass, but passing by my local chapel this evening there was loads going in for evening mass.

    i just don't understand it:cool:

Brainwashed from childhood, with the fear of God put into you.

    It's a question of faith I guess.

Personally, I don't go to mass for the priests, I go to pray.

Why do I pray? That's a question for another forum.

Probably most of the one you saw were over 60. You will only find a minority of young and middle aged people going to mass voluntarily.

Ireland is so catholic because our english oppressors tried to force us to become protestants.

As a result of this, when Ireland became independant catholocism became an integral part of our nation's identity. What remnants you see today are a fast-dying hangover from this period.

Not another one of these threads. Ireland is not a nation of devout Catholics. There are plenty of catholics but not everyone, its a personal choice and should be left that way in my opinion. I go to mass every week and most days during lent but don't expect everyone else to just because they are Irish. Its a personal choice.

there are very few devout catholics in Ireland. There are people who identify themselves as Catholic, but it's Bull!

And they do it because....we are a nation of sheep!

There's also the social exclusion people experienced for not towing the line.
The Church ruled by fear. Fear of God, fear of hell and fear of being branded a heretic.
Fear of limbo if you didn't start to indoctrinate your child immediately after birth.
We're just lucky enough to be alive in a more enlightened period.

The Roman Catholic Church has absolutly nothing got to do with God, it is no more than an evil pagan cult dressed up with words and names that are found in the bible.

I think that's a bit unfair on the Pagans, tbh.

I'm not a devout catholic, I'm not an anything.
I try to steer clear of religion really, think it does more harm than good.

I haven't been to mass since my confirmation. I haven't been in a church since my baby sisters christening - near 3 years ago.

TBH the ones that are "devout catholics" just have nothing else to do IMO.

Ireland is so Catholic because the Virgin Mary appears at Knock every Tuesday at 2 o clock. Havent you heard about that?

She also wobbles, just to prove that it's really her.

I'm 40 now, grew up in the 80's when the cynicism kicked in between the Pope's visit and the revelations concerning child abuse were disclosed.

At the time I never thought that the church would still be wielding such a large influence over the populace.

Yet here we are. I guess the older you get, the more conservative you become.

The Irish people have finally woken up to the fact that the Catholic Church is nothing more than a business. A big one at that. Give us money and Jebus the Zombie will grant you eternal life.

It could only work for so long before they got rumbled. Unfortunately, a few still subscribe to the scam, kinda like the ould biddies that ring tarot card hotlines at 4.00 euro a minute.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,276 ✭✭✭Alessandra

I would not describe most Irish people as "devout Catholics". Whilst the majority of people in Ireland would define themselves on the census or whatever as Roman Catholics, the reality is that many have not stepped inside a Church since their Confirmation or Wedding.
Being devout implies partaking in the Church community which few (young) people do.
Since around 90% of the schools in Ireland are Catholic it's pretty hard for people to be anything different to be honest.
I would describe myself as Catholic but I am not very strict I have to say.

I remember Caroline Morahan(hot, hot, hawt) claim that she was a very devout Catholic but believed more in Buddhism. :D

Haha good one. well I would say being of one particular faith doesn't mean you cannot appreciate another and take guidance from it but I guess you cannot really be Buddhist and Catholic:confused:

still if you tell some one that you dont believe in god u get the feeling of rejection straight away...
then u just think am i gonna get my head bitten off
One of my mums friends are very religious...and i mean very...but they dont force their kids to do anything with religion...
they always say god will find a way into your heart when your ready to accept him...
I take it as if you go to church a big nail will hammered into you
    with a tag bull****
and your then made believe that your gods follower...never went to church really unless my school force me to on lent...thats about it...born as a catholic and believed at some stage till i didnt see the point in it anymore...just the story of jesus seemed like a horrified disney story :) then started going towards the scientic belief of creation of life...

most ppl here say that that devotion has faded? no it hasnt...most ppl i know in the country side go to mass every sunday...what joy do their kids over the age of 18 being forced to go lol...religion seems to me more a control measure than a belief in something good...

Maybe people are so devout because they're sh1t-scared of burning in hell for an eternity?

When the British were running the country, the Catholic Church sucked up to them big time, and was suitably rewarded. The church kept the rewards to itself, just like it does now, bunch of greedy feckin megalomaniac control-freaks.

there's a site actually that you can register to renounce your faith and leave the church. lad on another board did it and had priests trying to arrange meetings with him and that

:) been looking at most of the threads it is quite clear people do not understand the Catholic church or for that matter God,Jesus was the founder of the Catholic Church and the faith has been passed down to us from the apasoles, and then through the priest hood.the Catholic church is based on TRUTH from the begining. We can not
judge the church on the evil deeds of some priests, while the the vast majority of true priests were true to the gospel and Jesus christ.i am a practicing cathloic and proud of it,one should not defame ones religious views and show respect for the same.if people have a problem with the faith their is always the option to leave, you and thousands like you are lucky that you are not living in an islamic state you should enjoy the freedom that the christian faith has helped provide

The truth of Christ's teachings have been subverted from St. Paul onwards. The teachings of the Catholic Church are a fantasy, like the tooth fairy and Santa.

As others have said, it's unfortunately closely linked to our 'national identity'. The fact that a great deal of schools are Catholic - however nominally - doesn't help.

Thank God (!) for the Educate Together movement, eh?

Ah is full of people who think they are fighting the power, which they would be were it 1950.

If you are worrying about control in 2010, worry about the State, the EU, anti-terrorism laws, "hate" laws which could criminalise attacks on religion. and more.

right. Or religious debates could be turfed out of AH to the relevent sub-fora. In this case the Atheist fora.

I'm studying at UCD, where I started before I knew of its origins as the "Catholic University of Ireland". As if that wasn't enough of a middle finger to the "Protestant" Trinity College, they invited a famous English Cardinal to be the first Rector: Cardinal Newman, who was famous partly because he'd converted from CofE to Catholicism. In other words, the fact that he was Catholic overrode the fact that he wasn't Irish. (Jessel, the Trifelge Putinard Pope Benedict is currently trying to get him Canonized as a saint, even though he was probably gay.)

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

With each wave of new kids there are more and more young people inclined to atheism, im in 5th year and im the only person who dosent believe in god (or has the balls to admit so) but there are alot of primary school kids that dont believe in god.

Although of those people in my class I would say about 1 of them goes to mass voluntarily, most couldn't even be described a good christians from a moral standpoint not to mention a religious one.

I wonder how many young athiests in this country are going to switch back once they get that first grey hair and it finally dawns on them that they're not immortal? How many after their first heart attack and how many after their first hip replacement?

Nobody drove anybody out, it wasnt like the North where refugees did flee. Contraceptions wasnt available anywhere in 1920. now was it.
