Well, you've also got X-men 2 (obviously not 3) and The Bourne Supremacy. (I wouldn't have BTTF2 in there meself)

I suppose the Scream 2 logic would rule out preplanned trilogies. Otherwise I'd have included The Two Towers (Extended edition only)

How'd I forget X2??? X-men: The Last Stand just blotted it outa my head I guess. What a shambles THAT was.

Supremacy had too much shaky-cam for my liking. Seeing it in the cinema nearly made me puke.

TTT was part of one long film technically, so that doesn't count :)

I can't believe you think BTTF2 was an improvement, or Aliens!

Totally agree on the Evil Dead, Terminator, and Godfather 2.

Big childhood favourite was Adams Family Values, loved it x 100 on the 1st.MV5BMTg4MjExNTk0NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwNTY0Mzk5._V1._CR0,0,144,144_SS90_.jpg

AFV was good especially with the cringe-worthy summer camps.

Aliens The Directors Cut had a lot more going for it, especially with Ripley dealing with losing her family, and bonding with Newt. I like Alien but love Aliens, go figure:D

BTTF2 had flying cars. Flying...cars! Also, it cleverly tied new events into old ones from the first film. Did I mention flying cars?

Aliens doesn't have the jump factor that Alien had though, we knew what and who the baddies were.

I'll give you the flying cars, but calm down.

Its not like they were amphibious.:)

The last Rambo was the best in the series, I didn't really like Rambo until that film.

These trilogy meters are a pretty good reference to prime you as to what to expect from these trilogies before you've seen them.

The first is by far the best movie, but the last one is the most fun. Its easy to forget that the first movie isnt an all out action film, only one person gets killed in the entire movie, its a really decent drama with some action bits in it, but they just got ridiculous in the sequels, having Rambo singlehandedly win Vietnam in the 2nd then team up with the Taliban to take on the pesky Commies in the third. Its like Rocky, great, low budget, well told opening, then just got more cartoony as they went on, then went back to their roots for the final chapter.

I liked Short Circuit 2 better than 1

    Does

1 - liking Johnny 5 make me a bad person?
2 - liking the sequel make me bad?

Add into Turtles 2 - Secret of the ooze

So you saying Temple of Doom was an improvement on Raiders?, as in better than Raiders, Seriously?

Plus it was a prequel not a sequel. So he is wrong on both accounts.

I've not watched them in many years, but I always preferred Temple of Doom when I was a kid.

It was a lot more fun.

I would have thought the scoring was reletive to the sequals not other films. It's a very complicated scoring system, I could explain it to you but I don't understand it myself so my explanation wouldn't make any sense.

Complicated smomplicated. Any system that can show Spider-man 2 as having abetter rating than Jurassic Park (regardless of what way they twist it) is clearly flawed.

Not really sure why it is now generally accepted that Godfather 2 is better then Godfather 1. They are both class but in my opinion the first tells basically the same story but in a much tighter script.

And Spiderman 2 is a better film then Jurassic Park, sorry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,716 ✭✭✭✭Earthhorse

Terminator kicks Termintor 2's ass up and down the garden as far as I'm concerned.

And I also thought X-Men 2 was the weakest, trying to rush as many storylines in as possible without building them up appropriately (and also too heavily focussed on Wolverine).

But there's no formual for such things (which won't stop me coming up with one and selling it online).

Sheesh, less of the movie posters and more discussion please peoples! :)

That trilogy chart stuff is muck. Whats it based on?

Re Aliens and Terminator 2, they are good movies but essentially quite different than the original. Alien is a horror/sci fi movie. Aliens is a sci fi/action movie.

Similarly Terminator and Terminator are telling different stories although the first movie is far superior.

As a preference I prefer Godfather 1 over 2. The story arc is is better IMO (i.e. the downfall of Michael Corleone) That being said i still love part 2.

All Spiderman films are piss poor, cannot stand them. At least the third was tongue in cheek and gave me a few lol's at the expense of the comic geeks who were none too impressed at l'il angsty Pete :D

Always thought T2 was the greatest sequel ever, however a recent repeat viewing of The Dark Knight forces me to re-evaluate...cracking piece of film.

I think---and correct me if I'm worng---that this is a reboot of sorts. they discarded Ang Lee's Hulk and restarted the franchise (rather unsuccessfully).

Where the Dark Knight doesn't quite match T2 is in tone. T2 starts dark, gets light, gets action-y, dark, light, action-y, and ends on hope.

Dark Knight is miserable, twisted, and hopeless. it's a powerful film, far beyond its prequel's scope, but in comparing DK and T2 I find T2 wins out easily. Just my humble opinion:)

I thought that might be the case but iirc they don't do an origin in it (or at least skate right over it) so I took it to be a sequel. Basically the movie starts with him on the run in South America looking for a cure for the disease which he already has.

It wasn't technically a reboot, it was a sequel that didn't put too much emphasis on tying itself to the first. It could be a standalone but also fits in the series too.

As for better sequels, though Evil Dead 2 amped up the good qualities of the first, it is not a better film. It provided a few more iconic moments sure but it lacked the bravada with a camera Raimi showed on the first.

And some more better sequel examples:

    Rambo 2
    Silence of the Lambs
(If you include it in the series)
    Blade 2
    Dawn Of The Dead

All four of these did what a good sequel should, provide all the basic goods that were so loved about the first. Eliminate some of the more annoying flaws of the first. Up the conflict somewhat and take off the rosey hue making everything ok. Not that any of the first films of the above examples were ever that rosey though! :D

I disagree---the laughing animal heads was both hilarious and terrifying. Prime example of Raimi's twisted directing skills. The chainsaw for a hand? Awesome.

Silence of the lambs is not IMHO a sequel. yes the book is but the film isn't. It uses different actors and a different style, it doesn't refer back to Manhunter, so to my mind it;s standalone.

Blade 2: awesome. Thanks to Guillermo del Toro. And of course Ron Perlman.

Dawn of the Dead...again, dunno if a remake of a sequel is, by default, a sequel.

Dude, Rambo II is not, I repeat not, better than the first one:)c'mon seriously???:)

Yes but IMO that's all Evil Dead 2 offered, some kooky moments, none of the genuine brilliance of the first.

I would both agree and disagree. It still had Manhunter to work against, it wasn't completely ruled out of the equation. There's plenty of Cox's performance in Hopkins. But yeah, thin link I'll admit.

Dawn of the Dead...again, dunno if a remake of a sequel is, by default, a sequel.

I'm referring to the 1978 Dawn of the Dead.

Nope, I much prefer Rambo 2. It may be due to my first introduction to Rambo being Rambo 3 so I prefer the all out warzone Rambo instead of the small town Rambo!

On reflection I would like to back away from my original comment, I was just sticking up for the Spiderman flicks which had been getting an undue bashing recently. I regret any offence caused and nobody is more embarrassad by this episode the me.

    To quote Scream 2

Randy: Stab 2? Who would wanna do that? Sequels suck! Oh please, Please! By definition alone, sequels are inferior films!

I suppose its how you define a sequel

Aliens - is a different 'sub-genre' so can't be classed as a true sequel.

The Temple of Doom - Is technically a prequal as it takes place before Raiders of the lost ark
