    i.e Ground Beef

The Americans have a system whereby fat percentages are clearly labeled, or percentage of lean meat.. same difference i spose.

    Linky:

    Do we have anything similar??

Do the Supermarkets differenciate, do butchers??

Supermarkets do. If you read the nutrition label, it should tell you how much protein and fat it has per 100g of raw meat.

Butchers tend to tell you what type of meat the mince is made from, ie, round, rib, sirloin etc, so it should be the same amount of fat as the unminced cut.

    Thanks Eileen!!

What would be the best cut to aim for for it to be resonably lean but still packing a decent amount of fat.. my 80/20??

Actually seeing as it's you, what's the best cut to ask for for the Ananbolic Diet... baring in mind im a poor destitute student ;)

Probably rib steak. One of the cheapest on sale, often called stewing steak, but if you a good cut, it is gorgeous grilled.

If you want lean beef on a budget, round is one of the leanest out there, and you can trim it more yourself if you want.

Oh ya stewing beef, i have actually grilled that lately and thought it was amazing considering at home the folks say it's crap

/joys of growing up on a farm, i really have no idea how much each cut costs!! And for that reason have pretty much just eaten chicken and the odd bit of striploin for the past few years when not at home :o

Most would probably have more, I expect they use the most fatty bits in this, and might throw in some leftover fats. A guy in work was butcher and told me some nasty stories, red dye & pork going in. Of course some butchers are decent but some people put a strange trust in them and a complete distrust of supermarkets.

L- tesco do a "healthy living" lean mince, I think it is 3.5% fat, it is so low you might have to add oil when frying it, it went up recently, think it is €4 for 500g now, they also have steak mince which is about the same price and about 10%. I think dunnes have a 90% and 95% types.

I used to get rib steaks, if you look at all the packs you can find one where the fat is easily trimmed off. Then I got a scissors and cut it up pretty finely, this is good for spag bol etc, I prefer decent sized bits sometimes, and it is nice to see what actually went in.

Tescos also have frozen lean mince, not as low as 3.5% maybe 5%. They also have frozen chicken pieces now ~€6.50 per kilo, not breast nut no added fillers, they did have frozen breasts bulked out with soya & water.
a decent amount of fat.. my 80/20
Thats a lot of fat. The cheapest of the cheap is 28% in tesco, and most of this falls out when frying so only if you made spag bol and did not drain it you would get this. The cheap stuff is really cheap, if you want fat it could be more economical to mix 2 types to get a 80/20 mix.

Organic lamb gigot chops are relatively cheap in Dunnes.

Spinkle a bit of rosemary on top and grill at 120 for 15 mins a side..mmmmm

Cheers Rub, i think i'm looking for around an 80/20 mix and if i can get it cheap all the better as i have a feeling food for the next few weeks is going to cost me a fortune.

Not the gigot chops, they are quite marbled, think you can get pork gigot chops too if you don't like eating fluffy cute things like I do :D

Re: High fat cheeses, I think the highest is cream cheese and marscapone is pretty good too.

Though most qualify for both high fat and low carb. It's a range within a gram or two carb/100g anyway.

If you are draining the fat then the higher you go the less difference it makes. i.e. if you have 20% fat and 50% fat and drain both they will be fairly similar. Of course if draining off fat it might not even be the cheapest if it is going in the bin (it is best to drain off onto a plate, let it go hard and scrape fat into the bin, if you pour down the sink it will clog your pipes and can attract rats).

I had a thread on rinsing fat a while ago, have a look at the bottom of this pdf it is saying when broiled (grilled) 80/20 ends up with 15% fat and 73/27 ends up 18% fat
    http://www.beefnutrition.org/uDocs/Reducing%20Fat%20in%20Cooked%20Ground%20Beef.pdf

I think the tesco 72/28 is maybe €3.50 for 800g, could be even less, I never get it now as it is so messy.

I think mozzarella is pretty low fat. Manchego is amazing, and much higher fat than other hard cheeses. Mascapone is very high fat, but so is most cream cheese.

naw won't get away with the tomato, and i've no intention of eating the easi-single they were just for show!! Have to go get the cheese tomorrow.

I was going to say that too! I got 5 bottles in dunnes the other day, €2 per bottle instead of €3. Lovely stuff and just peppers, vinegar, water, salt & garlic powder in it. Onyl get red hot original, (not the wings ones).

If you get extra fatty mince you can drain off the excess and keep it in the fridge for frying eggs or chicken.
