    Taken from http://www.rte.ie/news/2010/0218/odeaw.html

The President has accepted the resignation of Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea.
In a letter, the minister said he had come to the conclusion that his continuing in office would distract from the important and vital work of the Government.
In reply, Taoiseach Brian Cowen thanked the former minister for his hard work and commitment.

Responsibility for the Department of Defence has now been assigned to the Taoiseach.
Last summer, Minister O'Dea made a sworn statement in connection with a High Court case taken by Sinn Féin local election candidate Maurice Quinlivan.
While he accepted making comments about Mr Quinlivan which were published in a local newspaper, he denied making other, unpublished, comments which figured in the court case.
It later transpired that he had in fact made the comments - Mr O'Dea said he had forgotten making them, and apologised.
The Dáil was suspended this morning following rowdy exchanges over the issue, while the Government had won a confidence motion last night..
In an interview this afternoon with RTÉ News, he denied the Fine Gael accusation that he had committed perjury.
Asked about his statement that he received information from An Garda Síochána, Mr O'Dea said 'It was just general chit chat,' 'I passed it on - I shouldn't have passed it on.'
'I say things that I don't really mean sometimes in the heat of battle.'
'I have made a bad mistake, I've paid heavily for it, I am sorry, I am contrite, I've apologised, I apologised again ... I don't know what else I can do.'

    Palked....

Government terminology for leaving ones job at a rapid rate while making it look like you were going with years. Can be quite a dangerous practice, you can get lamped by a door or a gate on the ass on the way out.

Hmmm ... still a TD with a TD salary and pension for 2 years and will probably be re-elected in Limerick anyway in 2012.

Hope he is apologising to Maurice Quinlivan as well who he slandered in public.

After registering here, earlier this evening, and seeing the results of his own poll concerning his resignation, he decided his position was untenable.

Couglan will probably be next and rightly so assuming she remains in her current position anyway.

Is this the beginning of the end? Surely after the past few weeks, confidence in the government is pretty low. Time for a general election? Not that I can think of anyone who would do any better than this shower

Many people I know, were of the opinion that there should have been an election months ago. This could be a tipping point along with Mary Coughlans inablility to engage a few brain cells when needed!

If there was election in the morning I still think FF will do much better then what people expect you know.

Enda Kenny just does not appeal to majority people to take over as our next leader.

Yep. If it wasn't for Enda, there'd probably be much more support for FG

That is what is so worrying about the whole thing. We have no one to take
    their place.

The one FF politician I actually had a bit of respect for and he goes and fúcks it up. Don't think he deserved this tbh, I mean he slandered a SF politician and I've about as much respect for them as I have for the provos.

Line in the sand asap and moving on is in order here.

I don't think it's good for the greens being associated with Fianna Fail at the moment!

well, would they not have been seen to finally grow a spine and take action? or is it a question of too little too late in the eyes of the public?

He commited a crime, the crime of perjury carries a penalty of up to 7 years in prison. In britain, 2 politicians have gone to prison in the past for perjury!
and when they voted yesterday they all sould be locked up..

Did they take action though? I'm sure this will be spun to make it look like FF did the honourable thing in this situation and pushed O'Dea.

Willie O'Dea may be gone - but not very far I should think. Watch the Ministry of Finance spot....

They never will and if they do, yes it's alittle to late.

Good riddance to the lot of them, we need some new fresh politicians instead of the rats we've become so accustomed to over the past FF years.

well, wasn't it a couple of greens who brought things to a head.
i think it'll be hard for ff to spin it as they were proactive rather than reacting to events given they gave Willie O Dea a vote of confidence yesterday.

Good riddance. O Dea was an absoloute fool for acting the way he did and was a disgrace as Minister of Defence.

Instead of having a bunch of dirty rat bas***ds and fresh faces, I'd prefer people with experience within their Ministerial area and a CV to prove it. Take Mary Harney, Minister for Health, and possibly more health problems then a small hospitial.

Well even if he does, please don't assume that we're all idiots.

It's bad enough that we're all wrongly viewed as being violent scumbags, but being viewed as FF and O'Dea supporters ???

    That's a step too far.
