Coping with disc trouble while training

I have a bulging disc in my lower back which flares up every few months putting me out of action for 3-4 weeks. In between I'm able to train away as normal and it generally flares up without warning. My exercise routine only involves running and cycling, nothing too strenuous. What I want to know is there any particular exercises I can do to help and strengthen my back so I can cope with the injury better. I should also mention I've seen physios and a back surgeon about the problem and they all recommend to manage the injury and pain as I have been as opposed to an operation.

I have terrible problems with my back. it seizes up overnight so i get sharp pains when i begin to move to get up,and generally when im sittin down for over an hour i can feel it beginnin to seize aswel.

iv gone to physio, chiropractor, more physio, got mri went to specialist....and none of them were of any help..the specialist said it should get better with time(!) ever since i went to the chiropractor i have had to crack my back and neck on a regular basis 3 or 4 times a day to gain relief.I have gone to a massage therapist the last few weeks and it does help me during normal day activity but once i go for a run or any exercise the next day or 2 is painful.Iv had this over a year and shows no sign of getting better. has anyone ever had similiar problems?it affects all the area of my back but mostly lower back/glutes....:( when i lean my back towards my stomach i can feel movement and a clicking sound...help?

OP,best thing to do is look up youtube there are loads of exercises on it,having an exercise ball can be benificial as you can perform more exercises at positions which puts less stress on ur back, also a swim even twice a week could help if you can swim..may ease the pressure..

if your young, id hold off from the mention of an operation...

Ya your story is nearly the exact same as mine only I've had my problems on and off for over eight years since an injury playing football! I'm guessing I'll probably have to have surgery eventually if it gets any worse but in the mean time I want to do as much as I can to strengthen my back.

I had similar trouble last summer, I've been doing Pilates for the last six months and it's reduced both the amount of pain and the frequency of that pain significantly.

Good that you have both received proper medical guidance. Unfortunately no-one here will be able to give better advice so this thread will be looked.

Don't randomly try exercise you see on youtube without checking with your physio/chiropractors/physio.

    Good luck.
