It's being shown on Sky Movies, so I highly doubt RTE will have it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,497 ✭✭✭chalkitdown1

Just because Sky have it doesn't mean RTE won't air it at some point. Lost is on Sky and RTE air new episodes before them.

Anyway, if RTE were planning on showing it close to the US airing, we'd surely have seen ads for it by now.

Unless Sky specifically bought the rights for the UK & Ireland then I don't see why not.

They may acquire rights, when SKY are done with it, then screen it at 3am, one episode every 3 months ;)

    Really looking forwards to this.
Having seen Band of Brothers a few times and in HD (on a large screen with 5.1 surround) the tv series that they make is of outstanding quality.
    All credit to HBO.

Yep really looking forward to this. HBO have aired some great shows over the years, sopranos, oz and the like, bring it on :)

RTE took ages to show BoB. It was on BBC for a good while before RTE got around to show it. Regardless like all my TV I'll be getting it from source.

He seems to have allot of cousins on boads.ie :D

I think RTÉ, TV3 or TG4 would have mention at this stage weather or not they got the series. I would say Sky paid for the PPV rights.

What has that got to do with anything. The only thing that would prevent it being shown on RTÉ, TV3 or TG4 is Sky acquiring the Irish rights.

Sky can put it on any channel they want, it doesn't make the slightest bit of difference to RTE, unless, like Minstrel says, they've also acquired the Irish rights, which I very much doubt they have.

They'd probably put it on at 2am in the morning anyway.

Less of the torrent talk, folks.

Why anyone wants it on RTE is beyond me. Watching ad-free is a big must for me.

BBC is the channel of choice imo but Sky Movies is acceptable so long as it premières around the same time as in the US.

The cost of having Sky Movies might be a reason.

Seems to be a clip or two here, although it takes a while to load. I might wait until the DVD is released.

sure 720p's will be everywhere within mins of preair.

Chances are I wont get to see all the episodes of this one when it's on so will probably just ignore it when it's on tv then pick up the blu-ray boxset later on.

And this is the reason why Sky have possibly bought the rights for Ireland and the UK.

Sky Movies are just as much of a Pay TV service in Ireland as they are in the UK. And per head of population their Irish customers are far greater.

    Spielberg's praise for The Pacific
    Thursday February 25 2010

Steven Spielberg insists he was determined to find a way to get his new Second World War drama The Pacific onto TV screens.
After the focus on the Army in Second World War miniseries Band Of Brothers, Steven was determined to give the big picture by telling the story of the US Marine Corps.

"I felt incomplete, that if we didn't tell the story of The Pacific and had HBO said 'no we were in it for Europe and not any more' I would have found some other way to get this story told," the legendary Hollywood director said.
Steven serves as Executive Producer alongside actor Tom Hanks on the HBO show, which comes to Sky this April.
He gratefully added: "HBO gave us the money, that's very important!"
"I wanted to tell the story of the veterans of the Pacific Theaters of Operation, they brought the entire global wall to an end in 1945 and the sacrifice was no less horrendous than in Europe."

The Pacific will be shown exclusively on Sky Movies/HD from Monday April 5.

Was really good. but I hate they way they keep saying "it was just like being there", "we wanted to go thorugh exactly what they went through"... etc etc.. I dont remember hearing of any of the actors being blown up, tortured, burned to death etc...

I thought intially that they were just covering the Guadalcanal landings, but seems there covering Guadalcanal, Peleliu, Iwo Jima and Okinawa in the different episodes.

There's a cool map on wiki that shows the complete list of landings in order, if you want to follow it on the map. Gonna just link to it cos it's huge and would mess up the thread.

As an aside could I recommend the very good and very well-known TV documentary THE WORLD AT WAR if you want a nice gentle intro to the pacific campaign. I'm not a war buff and I didn't really know anything about the Pacific campaign (other than how it ended!) prior to watching it and I felt it gave me a decent enough grounding.

The show deals with both social effects of WWII as well as the actual war on two european fronts, north africa and the pacific so you could easily pick out the Pacific eps for a review. I will be watching them again before PACIFIC starts!

From recollection, I thought the documentary was VERY sketchy. Only one episode was dedicated to the Pacific island hopping campaign, and focussed on mostly Tarawa (which in reality was a tiny 1 square km island), didnt mention Midway (where Japs lost four carriers), no mention of Peleliu, nothing significant on Guadalcanal. Seemed to focus on basically saying, "they hopped from island to island, it was tough, and because they didnt want to lose a million plus more troops by invading the home islands, they dropped the bomb"

There's a program called The Lost Evidence, which is uploaded on youtube, and it has episodes dedicated to Guadalcanal, Pelileu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.. as well as Tarawa, Saipan, Guam, Luzon.. it's very comprehensive... World At War: Pacific is a very basic intro.

Full HD TV in the sitting room but no Sky HD, so I won't be watching it on broadcast here, definitely not something I would watch in SD.

Sky has responded to negative comments circulating on message boards, blogs and social network sites regarding its decision to air forthcoming ten-part miniseries The Pacific on Sky Movies rather than Sky1.

The HBO-backed show, which is produced by film heavyweights Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, follows the interlocking stories of three American Marines fighting the Japanese in the Pacific during World War II. TV fans across the web, including the Digital Spy forums, have been critical of the decision to debut the Band Of Brothers follow-up on the Sky premium channel.

In a statement released to DS, the broadcaster insisted that Sky Movies is "the natural home for this ground-breaking series" due to its high production values and cinematic scope. "We had always planned to screen The Pacific on Sky Movies and from the moment we saw the first clips of the series in early 2009, following more than three years of discussion with HBO, we were awestruck by the sheer scale and spectacle of the series and from that point on we knew it had to be shown on Sky Movies," the release said. "Although The Pacific has a mini-series label, the approach to the production and the end product is far more in keeping with a blockbuster movie release. The budget of over $200m (£128m) and the stunning production and cinematography all make this the most cinematic programming made for television ever."

Sky added that a place on Sky Movies allows episodes of The Pacific to air unedited and free from commercial breaks and on-screen intrusions. "The directors of The Pacific envisaged that each episode would be shown in full (ie without ad breaks), unedited, in HD and free from on-screen logos or graphics - as such Sky Movies is the most appropriate channel for the series," the statement continued.

"There has been a huge amount of interest from a number of different broadcasters and we had to fight hard to secure The Pacific. We've now seen a selection of the final episodes and are more convinced than ever that Sky Movies is the best place to fully experience The Pacific and we're sure that our viewers won't be disappointed."

The Pacific will be shown on Sky Movies Premiere and Sky Movies Premiere HD this Easter. It will debut in the US on HBO on March 14.

    Pfft.

What a load of bollocks. The directors envisaged that it be shown uninterrupted. That's why they sometimes show movies on Sky One.

I also notice that they will begin showing the series three weeks after the states. Talk about shooting themselves in the foot.

As if it will be shown in States ad free! What timescale do you reckon it will take to come out on blue ray if its shown in April? Ready for Xmas 2010?:(

Dont Sky have a SkyOneHD channel aswell? Im getting fed up with Sky myself. Have sky sports purely to watch Man united matchs yet besides cup games they only ever seem to be on once a month. Total waste of money:mad:

HBO is add free ya numphy... You'll notice that all they Tv shows are a hour long just like the BBC as they dont have adds :)

I don't have the movie package at the moment but will be getting it in just for this.. Its going to be epic.. Just wish I had a bigger TV or they played it in cinemas each week.. I think Id go every week.. Thats about 130 Euro for your tickets so the 10er a month for the movie channels isn't bad!!

There is a case to made for waiting till the Blu-Ray Box Set comes out (at christmas time I'm assuming) and watching it in one epic weekend.

Absolutely. I have Band of Brothers on standard dvd and on Blu-ray, the difference is stunning and not just in picture quality.
Added thru a 5.1 surround system, its out of this world to watch on a large HD flat screen.
