Good Friday Drinking Tradition

I'm having an argument with a friend and wanted all of your opinions (hopefully to shut him up).

Do you go out drinking the night before good friday or do you drink out on the night of good friday.

I go out on the night of good Friday because its cheaper to pre-drink at home. If I went out the day before I'd be spending more money drinking in pubs in the early evening.

There's nowhere to go out drinking on Good Friday...unless a field and a flaggon of Devil's Bit is what you have in mind?

12 o'clock in a house, then out to a pub, no?

The pro-drinkers have an inside man at a hotel who's willing to "check them in" as hotel guests, distribute the spare room keys, and serve them at the hotel bar.

Where do pubs open at midnight? I know some nightclubs that do alright.

My mates and I have a traditional barbecue and piss up on good Friday...
Been doing it for nearly six years now..
    It's always great fun.

    Secret tip..
If you get caught short for booze on good Friday.. Try a Chinese restaurant.. They sell it.

In hindsight, i regret even asking this, some people are constantly looking to pick a simple question apart with the most ridiculous responses

No wonder the Brits make jokes about us. For stuff like Good Friday some of us have to adopt alternative drinking strategies rather than go one day without .... and contemplate said strategy six weeks in advance no less!

I won't be bothering going out the night of Good Friday, waiting around all night, drinking at home and then going out at midnight, it just to much hassle tbh. For the sake of one night, you're not going to miss out on much!

I've bought drink quite legally in a licensed bar on Good Friday, get on the train, the buffet car and catering trolley are exempt

I was just about to post this actually! You don't even have to be on the train to drink, once you have a ticket to travel that day, the bar in the train station will serve you. A few of my friends did this last year, they went to Hueston, bought the cheapest train tickets they could, and drank in the bar there for a few hours!

    I disagree..
The entire reason that we have to go one day without is out dated and insane. The day isn't the issue. It's the reason behind it and the fact that it's still enforced in this country that is the issue for me.

The Irish government still.. in this day and age are saying that there is one day a year that you cannot buy alcohol because it's tradition and we are a good religious country.

As far as I'm concerned, that is the government forcing it's outdated religious crap down my throat and restricting my civil liberties with it.

Yes it's a minor issue.. Yes it's only one day... But it is still ridiculous in this day and age to have laws of the state based on religion.

How would you feel if that during Ramadan, it was illegal for any shop to sell food during the hours of daylight?

    It's bloody daft.

No I agree entirely with that. But one could argue that if you don't want to observe the day then go back to work and stop worrying where you're gonna get your beer from.

I went to a party last Good Friday. The one before that I headed to Newry (pubs don't open until five though). This year will be more of the same!

I'm normally forced to take the day off..
    Same with Christmas.
    Pain in the ass really..

It gives the nations yahoos an outlet for their rebellious natures as it seems to be the one day of the year when people make a point of drinking. Nobody can resist the lure of the forbidden fruit.

A lot of people I know drink more on Good Friday than they would on a normal Friday, purely because "you're not meant to".

They seem to stockpile the booze in, as if we were expecting a huge hurricane, and inevitibally all the booze gets drank:D

Sure why wouldn't they? You never know, the pubs may never open again!

I may or not drink the night before Good Friday. Ditto God Friday itself. Whether or not I do is in no way governed by the panicky thought that I can't buy drink on said day because that would be a bit silly, wouldn't it?

This year, Good Friday is my birthday and I have a day off.

So I'll have to come up with something...

So if that's a trip to the pub is this an invite to a house party?

I know of a number of people who have bbq's & booze parties. I'd never heard of this until two years ago. It seems to be quite popular. I seem to be missing out.

Although my first thought was when I heard about them was "isn't it a bit cold to have a bbq in February" - ah to hell with it. Any excuse for a bbq. In fairness how many nice days do we get.

I don't have a tradition for drinking on or around Good Friday.
I can manage one day without drink without my whole world crashing down.

Aah Jaysis can you not go for one day of the year without a feckin drink?

Can go plenty of days during the year without a drink, GF is just not one of them ;)

I very rarely drink myself but I'll have a bottle or two on Good Friday just to stick it to the Man.
And to raise a toast to the baby Jesus.

I can. But Friday's a stupid day! It should be Good Tuesday. Who drinks on a Tuesday?!

Yeah. Why did Jesus have to go and die on a Friday?

    Quite happily.

But being unable to purchase drink on the first day of the longest weekend off of the year is just plain stupid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 188 ✭✭yaaaboy

Im from kerry and there is always beach parties and i know of at least 4 pubs that are open on good friday, you just have to knock a few times on the door to be left in.

Also, my father who isnt really a drinker at all drinks 7 or 8 cans of heineken on the day. He says he always feels like a few cans on good friday. Maybe its because of people are not meant to be drinking on that particular day for some reason..

Do you go out drinking the night before good friday or do you drink out on the night of good friday.
