I think I'm going to cry after reading this thread.

Surely there must be some way of overriding the light? I'm not worried that it doesn't work, it's more about failing the NCT.

I have an 05 2.2 CDTi with a VSA light on. I wonder if the NCT testers check that the light comes on prior to the car starting and then goes out?

Unfortunately the NCT will not pass if this light is on permanently. It used to until over a year ago but I put mine through last November with the light on and it failed. I had to install another second hand one and so far so good it is working ok.
If you want to chance it maybe you will get a sympathetic NCT mechanic who will overlook it. It wont cost you anything (only time) for a retest as they just check the light is off when you bring it back.

The VSA error is a real pain and so far is the only bad point with this car (and the tax but that's another story :D). Another poster suggested getting the unit reconditioned to fix it permanently, if this is an option I would go with it. Also, make sure it is definately the VSA unit that is bust, sometimes it can be a dodgy abs sensor.

    Best of luck with it.

I'm going to get the light "turned off" and take my chances with the NCT lads. I read their remit and they are supposed to check that if a VSA light is present that it should work but I'm hoping that if it's not on then they mightn't fail it..... maybe

Apparently there are other work arounds but 500 quid doesn't sound too bad.

Pity as I'm really happy with the car other than that (and the tax!!). It does like brake pads as well :(

had the light on in my accord. honda dealer will do diagnostic for free. whole VSA module had to be replaced. unit costs up to 1600 euro. i was 57 miles over warranty but honda covered it anyway. 150 in labour and problem is fixed. warranty covers up to 60000 miles.

Unfortunately mine has done 79,000 miles and is a UK import. It was acttually a Honda fleet car. I read somewhere that there was a recall to get them replaced or maybe it was if it went wrong they would replace it (as in your case). Anyway I don't think that any dealer will want to be having tanglings with me. :(

Just send your ABS unit to BBA reman - they fixed mine (including Lifetime warrantly) for £135! Simples!

Wish I new this before I SPENT £800 ON 2 SECOND HAND FAULTY ONES!

My experience from this was that i had BBA-Reman send out a replacement refurbished ABS block which was then fitted by my mechanic and i just sent back the dud one from my car. And the VSA light went off straight away no hassle. BBA charged me £250 for the unit (excluding VAT) including postage. It's not the whole ABS pump but only the metal block part which they send so there's a bit of a strip-down and assembly job to be done by the mechanic. The whole job is a bit of a pig (in his words :) ). My dud unit had part no. 57111-SEF-E610, from a '06 Accord CDTI 2.2. The mechanic charged 150 euro for the replacement job, so altogether it was about 500 euro for the whole job which i'm fairly happy with considering what the alternative was. The mechanic i used was at Motortech in Dublin7, ask for John.
Just in case anyone is interested i thought i'd share some other info as this thread really helped me out. I wasn't able to diagnose the problem using my own ELM327 scanner as it was relating to the ABS system. My mechanic couldn't even get a fault code because his scanner couldn't pick it up either. I actually got Discount Tyres to scan it for me when i was getting my tyres changed and they did it for free. So i got the dreaded 66-01 fault. After an extended period of denial and checking things like brake fluid level, brake lights, fuses etc. i came to the conclusion that after 160k miles the pressure sensor in the ABS unit had to be replaced. Job done now, car driving great as ever!

My car just failed the nct today over the vsa light. It's just a visual they said so I just need to have the light off

My car had the VSA light for a while and it turned out to be a duff speed sensor.

Had the same issue on my own car (08 accord) with the vsa light appearing a couple of weeks back. Following diagnostics by honda i was advised error "66-1 brake pressure sensor" and advised the part would need replacing at a cost of €440 for a reconditioned part plus labour.
The extended warranty on this part is 6 years with a mileage limit of 62k miles. My car is under 6 years but mileage is at 79k miles. I spoke to honda and despite the car having a full honda service history from new they were not willing to extend any goodwill. Very bad form I thought considering it is a known manufacturing fault with the part. Would have thought it should be a cut and dry situation where a manufacturer would give goodwill.

Anyway I got the part taken out of the car and have sent it to ecu testing.com, a UK company who will rebuild the part with lifetime warranty for £165. The part is with them at the moment. Postage to the UK was €41 and obviously will be return postage charge also. Labour is €160 total so I would expect a total cost of just over €400. Cheaper then going with honda solution at least.

I would not hold any stock in honda goodwill after this experience.

just back from a garage they used the diagnose machine and couldn't see any faults, can this light be turned off temporary?

It can't be turned off as it's flagging an error. Did you do anything recently to the brakes/ABS/TC of the system. It could be a number of things.

    1. Brake pedal switch
    2. VSA neutralisation
    3. ABS Sensor

and on. You'll need a code - however if the garages scanner isn't throwing up and error it's probably a HDS specific code. You could simply try neutralizing the VSA (i.e. resetting the errors first)

VSA warning light came on month or so ago on my 05 Accord, it failed NCT as a result. Sent into Honda dealer couple of weeks ago and diagnostic read faulty ABS pump which they quoted me €2500.

Luckily I had already read this thread

Sent it to http://www.ecutesting.com/ got it back in under a week.

my mechanic just installed it and the light went off.

Total cost was around €600 including p&p.
For those who also run into this issue the ABS pump weighs around 2.3kg and is roughly 6x5x5 inches.

Thanks to the info in this thread I'm €1900 richer :)

    Hi
I had the same problem with an 08 Accord 2.2TD estate. Quoted 2k for the part and 500 for fitting by the not so helpful (entirely rubbish) local Honda dealers in Limerick. Saw this thread and was going down the BBA reman or to ecutesting route until I discovered this guy ,Thomas Dennehy- tdcarparts, on Ebay that's based in Ballincollig in Cork.

If you search ebay for tdcarparts and click on anything he's selling it should give you his mobile number in the contact details for the item. For some reason boards won't allow me post a link today.

Rang him and as I was able to leave my car with him he repaired , with a lifetime guarantee ,and fitted my part for €520 so a saving of 2k.

Says he get's a few Hondas a week just a weakness in the car.

^That's very handy to know Userjohn. Thought I had this dreaded problem myself a few weeks back, but thankfully the VSA light went off and has stayed off since.
That bloke Thomas Dennehy seems to do remanufactured ABS units for a large range of makes and models of car.

FWIW, here's a screenshot of one of his Ebay ads:

we managed to get the light off too, after buying a reconditioned vsa that didn't work, mechanic did a full oil change and the light went off!

This thread helped me greatly and saved me a pile of money so thought it only right to share my experience.

08 Honda accord failed NCT as the VSA light was on. After lots of research and some diagnostics by my mechanic which revealed a brake pressure sensor fault. I called Honda dealer and explained my issue. The mechanic straight away suggested it was the ABS pump that needed to be replaced/reconditioned. In fairness to him he put me in contact with freestorm in Cork.
I spoke to Thomas there, he quoted €360 to recondition my part or €460 for a new one. I went with the recondition option. Part was sent by courier on Monday afternoon and I received it back in working order on Wednesday morning.
Mechanic fitted it, VSA alert disappeared and NCT visual retest passed all in one day.

    Total cost €540
    diagnostic check €20
    postage €10
    part €360
    labour €150

    Hi.
I have 04 accord diesel and VSA light went on together with ABS light.
Fault code was showing faulty rear abs sensor, which was replaced and ABS light is off now.
But VSA light stayed on and and there are no fault codes.
My mechanic checked the pump and told me that it is working on,so we are struggling now what could be the cause of VSA light on
when everything is working and there are no fault codes displayed.
Car is due to NCT so it needs to be fixed.

Checked lot of threads about this, but none specified my problem.
    Any advice please?
    Thank you.

Take it for a drive and turn the car off while driving and then back on again, sounds simple but it might reset the computer. Try it a couple of times if it doesn't work initially. If it comes back on just do this the day of the NCT. That's what I did, it came through fine. Eventually the light went off completely after I cleaned all the ABS sensors. It's a common problem with Accords, mine is also an '04.
