Weights/Cardio

    Hi There,

First time poster! I have been lurking through this fitness forum for a long time now and have found the information most helpful.

I have always gone to the gym for cardio work but from what I have read I decided to start doing weights also as everyone here recommends it.I decided to start Body Pump which I find great.

What I am wondering is, is it better to do cardio after a body pump class or before?

By cardio I mean a spin class or HIIT on treadmill. By HIIT I mean, 5 mins at 6kph, then 1 min at 9kph, 1 min at 10kph, 1 min at 11kph, 1 min at 12kph and then 1 min at 6.kph - I repeat these and do half an hour.

    Trying to lose weight.

Sorry about the long post but just trying to give you as much info as possible.

Thanks a mill for your help!

    Try both.

    Stick with whichever you prefer.

Do both, alternate between days when you do solely weight sessions and mix it up with cardio during the week. Both are ideal for weightloss and it breaks the monotony of concentrating on one

I have heard that it is better to do weights before cardio, purely because you would be tired after the cardio and it might affect your form on lifting. I know personally I am a sweaty mess after cardio so the only thing I'd be doing is taking a shower!!!

But as somebody else said, why not do them on different nights? Especially if you are talking about a spinning AND a body pump class - seems like a lot to do on the one night?

She may want to do them on the same night for time constraints etc. You are right in saying that cardio pre weights can have an impact but if you stick to 30 sec intervals with 45 secs to 1 minute of rest over a 20 minute period, you will find that this compliments the weights just fine. Some research suggests that cardio after weights will diminish the increased protein synthesis (due to the enzymes ampk and mtor) as a result of resistance training so there are very real arguments for performing cardio before weights too. Do what you see fit and don't get too hung up over it. At least you are actually doing weights!

i would recommend a proper weights program rather than a pump class as those classes focus on lots of reps and sometimes with poor form or not a full range of motion.

e.g. do lunges, straight leg deadlifts, press ups, one arm rows, dips, core work, etc

post up your diet in full detail also and your stats

Yeah transform is right. I went to a body pump class in Riverview a few weeks ago and it was brutal. The squats were barely squats which would do absolutely nothing for toning your bum/getting rid of cellulite. It was more cardio than weights I felt the class moved very fast and the instructor had no time to correct anyones form or advice them on how to do things.
