Not looking for a debate on whether they should or should not be allowed. Just wondering if we could put a list together of courses that do/don't allow them for use in their competitions...

    i.e.

    Headfort - Yes
    Donabate - Yes
    Elmgreen - No
    Knightsbrook - Yes

interesting topic, hopefully a list can be put together at a later date for simplicity,
also just wondering if your course allows g.p.s. for normal members competitions at the weekend will this be the same for open days/scratch cups or is it a case of having to ask......

who is doing the mapping,a member or outside agency

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 107 ✭✭macdonagh2007

When I sought permission to get a local rule passed/introduced in Castlebar G.C. covering the use of distance measuring devices back in Nov.09 I presume now that I can use it in our 2010 week-end competitions and our Tuesday Open Day.
We are getting new score cards printed at the moment with revised new local rules.

This year we are hosting the Bulmers All-Ireland Cups & Shields Finals in September and the Connacht Cups & Shields Finals in August so it will be interesting with our local rule whiter the G.U.I. will permit the competing teams to use them. As far as I can remember a Rep. from SkyCaddie mapped the course

It's a condition of most (all?) GUI inter-club competitions that they can't be used, regardless of what local rule a club has in place.

Understood that they can't be used in any GUI inter-club competition, regardless of what local rule a club may have in place.

Thanks Mister Sifter. I'm doing a list up in Excel format for easy of update, I'll post soon, won't have covered ever course but anyone in the know for those courses missing can advise either yes or no. I have about 160 on the combined Yes/No list. There are a surprising amount on the "Yes" list.

Good work guys. Adding to the list based on jscs I've played this year- yes: Youghal, gold coast. No: kinsale, mallow. And Cobh does now allow them.

Attached file is a list of Clubs that details whether they allow GPS/Measuring Devices in competition or not.

    Extract from GUI web site:-
Decision 14-3/0.5 in the 2006-2007 Decisions on the Rules of Golf enables a Committee to introduce a Local Rule permitting golfers to use a distance measuring device to obtain distance information during a round. Without such a Local Rule, the use of such a distance measuring device is a breach of Rule 14-3, the penalty for which is disqualification.

The R&A is not advocating the introduction of a Local Rule permitting the use of distance measuring devices and is not introducing such a Local Rule for any of its own amateur championships or matches, or The Open Championship.

Similarly the GUI is not permitting the use of distance measuring devices in its National and Provincial events.

It is for each individual Committee to decide whether it wants to allow the use of distance measuring devices for play on its course or in certain of its competitions. In the absence of a Local Rule, the use of such a device is contrary to the Rules of Golf.

So if a local rule exist, they are allowed, otherwise not. It would be advisable to double check with the relevant club office prior to playing a competition with a GPS device, just to ensure you are allowed, as the club may have their rule worded that only certain comps you are allowed to use them in.

If anyone has any updates on the list, just drop me a PM and I will update so everyone can avail of

That excel file is very useful, cheers for all the work you put into it. I'll let you know of any others I come across.

Actually it might be an idea to have a list of the 'don't know yet's as well, if possible. That way if anyone is a member or is playing any of those courses they can be sure to ask.

You can take it that if a club is not listed 'I'don't know' if they allow GPS during comps. I've updated the file since my last edit, but problem is that I seem to be limited to the amount of times I can edit the post and thats been reached. Don't want to keep posting message after message, so I'll hold off until I've substantially more listed than the 180 clubs I have already

Mister Sifter, great idea in getting this list started. There is currently another thread relating to the legality of iPhone Golf GPS Apps. We have established that once the app can only measure distance, and no other apps exist on the phone capable of measuring slopes, temperature and wind (speed and direction), then they fall under the heading of DMDs, and so will be competition legal if a local rule exists. It is however recommended that the club are consulted before using an iPhone App, as opposed to automatically assuming they are legal, just because dedicated DMDs are.

Hence given the significant volume of Golf GPS Apps emerging, and the growing popularity of the iPhone, can I ask if your list could be amended to also outline which GPS friendly clubs are also iPhone-GPS friendly?

    cheers

    1.
Westmanstown allow GPS but NOT Laser!!!! True - the Pro there told me recently.

    2.
    Knockanally allow them.

    3.
    Rathcore allow them.

    4.
    Curragh do NOT allow them.

    5.
The English Golfing Union allow them since 2009 in all their Championships.
Pity our GUI/ILGU do not allow them.
Eventually they will be allowed - like fairway distance markers were eventually allowed all those years ago. Let's do it now!

    6.
Since I started using the laser DMD it has speeded up my game - no more walking back and forth checking distance from the Fairway marker.

    7.
I bet golfers are using them at courses that do not allow them because they assume every course allow them. If found out they will be disqualified and then will get the 'hump' and not go back to the said course. Business lost!

I recently emailed the GUI and asked them would it be possible to include info about use of GPS devices in competition, on each clubs listing, you know where they give details about green fees and use of soft spikes etc.
They said they'd look into it when reviewing their website again.
